Carburetors get gunked up as they sit unused with fuel in them. The fuel starts to separate, and the newer ethanol-mix gasoline separates faster than older gas ever did. It is simple, but time consuming to clean your carburetors. Even though it is simple, care should still be taken while performing this. Keep carburetor cleaner away from any rubber or plastic parts, and follow the instructions laid out in this video.

There are also passageways inside the carburetors that get gunked up. I hate to say this, but pull them off again, take the jets out, and do the same thing with the guitar string inside the carburetors. Then spray through the passages with carburetor and see if a stream comes out. The passages go through to the carbs and out the air filter side. Clean from both sides with the string. Also I would pull out your air/fuel adjuster screws, clean them, and set them to the factory number of turns.

The fuel economy problems in carbureted bikes almost always lies in the spark or the carburetors. You should check your spark gap first on your spark plugs and if your coils are still providing a hot spark (resistance check on the coils, the repair manual describes how to do this). That is the easiest thing to begin with and rule out. Then clean the carburetors well. If done correctly it should run great after that.

Your mystery tube at 43:00 on the California float bowls was where they were hooked up to the charcoal canister for the gas tank vent. Originally there would have been a tee fitting between them and a line going to the charcoal canister which has a line going to the gas tank.

Actually, the “cheap” screwdrivers supplied in most Japanese mc tool kits are JIS, and they do work much better in those carburetors. I’ve been working on these bikes since my first Yamaha YS1 250. I know about caming out the screw heads! You’ve been lucky… btw, I also have one of those T handled screw drivers! You can order the handle and the JIS blades from any site with Honda or Yamaha parts.😂

I've seen it both ways. Sometimes it is still good and sometimes it leaks air. I've sealed them up before with RTV silicone from napa. It doesn't look pretty but it fixes it, plus it ran fine for 3 years. If you don't have idle problems then you should be able to leave it like that and it will run fine until the cracks get worse.

you will need the same one. You can probably order the screw online at shspowersports, just navigate to your motorcycle and go to the carburetor section to find the part on the diagram.
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 11 лет назад
that sounds like a throttle cable issue. If your cables are too tight on the cable adjuster then they will stick for sure. It is common when you are putting the carburetors back in to overtighten them. I've done it before. Also when the front wheels are turned, if the throttle cables aren't routed the correct way it will put stress on them and possibly shut off the bike. Check the cable routing and tightness, maybe even spray some kind of silicone lubricant inside the cables.
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 12 лет назад
That's a pretty common thing. Sometimes they don't slip back because they get a little dry, you can wipe a little motor oil around it with your finger to lubricate it then it should pop back in. Or if your hands are clean enough you can spit on the tip of your finger and wipe it around.
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 11 лет назад
yeah. all the choke does is change the air/fuel ratio for starting. So adjusting the air/fuel ratio should fix it. Those little o-rings do get stuck quite often.

string size will be either .010 or 10 gauge, which is the high E string. That size works on most carburetors. I've had to get .009 before for carburetors on a 250.

slides are driven by vacuum only. They shouldn't open when you move the throttle unless the bike is on and there is vacuum from the engine.
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 11 лет назад
I think it is talking about a fuel level meter, I'm not exactly sure what it's called. It's like a little tube thing with a hose on the other end that you connect to the drain plug. The fuel level should go up to the 18.5 mm mark on the tube. I've never had to use one on the floats because I haven't encountered a float height issue.

Most of the time when they sit for a while then you need your carbs cleaned. I'm not sure I know what you are describing with the fuel-filter-looking thing on what is as small as a coolant line. I'm not familiar with anything like that on the FZR. A fuel line wouldn't be that small unless it is a very small engine. It could be the vacuum line for the fuel petcock on the gas tank, but I don't know what the filter-looking thing is. A one way check valve maybe? There is no reason to have one there
@rg10969
@rg10969 11 лет назад
I think my problem might be on each of the idle/mixture passages. I removed the screw but I didn't see the little o ring and figured it was down in the passage. So I didn't spray out that passage with carb cleaner (didn't want to swell the rubber o-ring), after reading on FZR Archives I think this may be my problem.

JIS screwdrivers are better - no doubt about it - you've been lucky with the Phillips bit so far. Seriously use metric tools on metric fasteners! The flat blade screwdriver mod is good.

Hey man, I really need some help. I am currently working on my 91 fzr 600, and on the carbs you see those 2 hoses that are in between the 1-2nd, then 3rd-4th carb attached to the plastic piece? I just pulled mine off an noticed that they didn't have a hose on them and were just freely open. Where do they attach to on the bike? Could that be the reason it won't start up well? A vacuum problem maybe? Please help.
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 6 лет назад
+dalancabo1995 the hoses are for fuel overflow. It will function fine without them. Mine didn't connect to anything. I've heard that on racebikes the overflow tubes fed into a canister, but the canisters never came on the models that were sold to the public.

Thanks for getting back, I used the guitar string and completely went through the carbs. I got it all back together but my FZR won't stay running unless I have the choke on. Any ideas what might cause this? The bike hasn't ran since last summer.

I was wondering if you know what would make my throttle stick and not return to idle sometimes. Also sometimes when I turn the wheel it kills the engine. I also have 91 FZR, doesn't look near as nice as yours, I would love to do the R6 tail swap but lack of funds now, so I still have original tail.

Thx! My bike has been sitting for a long time and now it starts very diificult and when it finally starts it is running with low rpm,s with a fully open throttle. What is your opinion? Clean carbs? Vacuum leak? Or what? B.T.W I have a hose that is left over which has something that looks like a fuelfilter in it but than totally black and the hose is about 50 cm. long and about the thickness of the hose that goes to the coolant reservoir? Any idea what I mean or where it belongs? :-)

At 24:40 when you say the fatter jet is the one inline with the screw, you mean the one with the fatter hole in it right? Cause mine look exactly the same. Is this one (on the left, inline) the main or the pilot jet?
@steezridin6974
@steezridin6974 6 лет назад
When I say they look exactly the same I mean on the outside. I have four with bigger holes and four with smaller ones as I believe I should
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 6 лет назад
+steezridin yeah, I meant the one with the larger hole inside. That is called the needle jet or main jet and it sits inline with the screw that holds down the emulsion tube. If you look inside where the jet goes you should be able to see through to where the needle sits when the diaphragm side is installed
@steezridin6974
@steezridin6974 6 лет назад
HourNine Racecraft awesome thanks so much for replying man! I have another quick question about something I don't believe you covered: when putting the float needles back on the floats, does it matter which side the metal hanger on the needle faces? It's kind of an L shape and I'm not sure if the two circles that would create the bottom of the L should face downwards or upwards?
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 6 лет назад
+steezridin no..it can go either way, but just make sure the needle moves up and down when the float does. Otherwise you'll flood out the carbs or not get enough gas. The most import thing is that the needles are clean and the point isn't worn out on the bottom

@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 8 лет назад
+andrew munslow I don't remember if that particular jet is removable or not. If you can't remove it, you can always remove the emulsion tube (the thing that holds all of the jets). You can remove it by taking the capped-nut off of the top (approx. 6mm size), then it should slide up. After it's off you should be able to clean both sides of the jet as I showed in the video. Hope this helps! I haven't worked on a set of FZR carbs in a few years.

@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 10 лет назад
it is the crankcase ventilation, and the hose that goes up to the bottom side of the airbox. If you don't have an airbox, then get a little breather filter from your local autoparts store.

How do you get that top half of the engine where the carbs are off? I'm having trouble getting that off just to start the carb cleaning
@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 9 лет назад
KbBeBallin45 Remove the gas tank cover, and then remove the little metal gas tank. You will have to remove a few rubber lines. Then take an allen key (hex key) and loosen the clamps. Take off the throttle cables. It should take a little force, but they should come out. Getting them to go back in is a little more difficult since they are hard to slide back in the boots.

@LegitRaceCraft
@LegitRaceCraft 9 лет назад
Try getting some vicegrips and clamping onto the side of the head of the screw, spray it with some PB Blaster before you do. If that doesn't work then buy a set of Craftsman screw removers, drill a tiny hole in the head of the screw with a regular drill bit (about 1/8) and don't go deeper than the thickness of the head, then switch to the screw remover (it's like a reverse drill bit). Apply pressure and the screw will either come out or the head will snap off. Once the head snaps off, the threaded part of the screw should come out easy. I've done this many times if the vicegrip didn't loosen it. Threads don't get damaged and the screw always comes out.
