Hi Everyone!
I'M BACK...Again!! Thanks you for sticking around and for all your well wishes!! xo
Are you ready for a deep dive into glazing pottery using commercial glazes, AMACO, MAYCO and Spectrum? Well, get ready to glaze pottery with me. In this video i show you how to glaze pottery and different pottery glazing techniques. In this video i am using a brush on glaze technique and layer glazes that pretty much guarantee beautiful glaze results.
In this video, I film a step-by-step pottery glaze tutorial perfect for beginner potter’s as well as for those who are more experienced and still like to learn and/or be inspired to try different things.
Even as a beginner potter, you can up your ceramic glaze layering results through strategic glaze application to produce GORGEOUS GLAZE results worthy of your friends and customers praise.
I hold nothing back and share the clay that I used; PSH Clay 540i and Plainsman Clay M-340 and the glazes; Pearl White by Spectrum; Blue Rutile Potters Choice by AMACO and Lavender Mist by MAYCO.
I layer glazes in vertical stripes to create interesting glaze results and beautiful glaze drips!
Be sure to stick around to the end where I show some Bloopers...LOL...
Many of you have asked about Glazing Brushes I thought I'd add this until I am able to do a more in depth video on tools, but I think this should hold you over. Some of the brushes that you see me use in my videos are from various Pottery Supply Stores, I have since purchased some from Amazon and Art Stores etc. and tested them out to see how much I like them...so far I'm impressed. I am sharing my Amazon Link with you for some brushes that I have purchased myself and quite like.
DISCLAIMER: Please be advised that the links provided are affiliate links and I may get a small commission from qualified purchases. This is at absolutely no extra cost to you!

Please let me know if it's a good feature and offers a good comparable product.
The bristles of the brush should be soft and flexible, not stiff. These brushes are Ultra-Soft Goat.

I want to get a potters wheel but for now I only do ceramics. I have nails and always end up jabbing them into the pieces when removing them from the molds. I've never seen any user have nails of any length turning pieces using a wheel. Is it possible or would I need gloves? Your glazes must be mid fire. I use low fire and have to apply 3 coats instead of 2. Are there any 06 glazes that only use a 2 coat application? What kiln are you using? I like the one button start. Thank you for sharing.
@SarahWaltonPottery
@SarahWaltonPottery 6 месяцев назад
Sadly, manicures are a thing of the past for most potters! My hands are so dry most of the time due to being in clay all the time. I used to go and get gel coating /shellac but always on super short nails, like no white tip showing for the exact reason you mention, they end up tearing and damaging your work not to mention the shine gets dulled very quickly, so it just wasn't worth it for me. Yes, I use mid fire glazes and I shoot to for ^5.5 - ^6 fire. (2170°- 2232°) I don't even have, nor have used any of the low fire glazes but I do know that Spectrum has some pretty ones! The kiln I was using in this video has since been retired , it was a 1961 Evenheat Kiln Sitter Kiln 17.5 inches (I recently upgraded and bought a brand new one Cone Art Kiln which is digital and so easy to operate! ). The old one had a push button to start however you have to flick switches,I don't even think they make them like that anymore the newer kiln sitters have dials which is also better, then what I had. I hope you find my answer useful or at least entertaining! 🤭

What grit sand paper do you use on bottom for smoothness?
@SarahWaltonPottery
@SarahWaltonPottery 7 месяцев назад
Hello! I use a variety of sanding blocks, and sandpaper, depending on my desired end result. If I just want/need to smooth the bottom I start with a 60 grit and go all the way up to 600 grit, I attach my pot to my wheel with my Giffin Grip and lightly run each block to give a supper smooth bottom, check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U4XnoTvHUiI.html

I make polymer clay pens and i would like to know if i can use these glaze products for my polymer clay pens?
@SarahWaltonPottery
@SarahWaltonPottery 8 месяцев назад
Great question, I'm not really sure what a polymer pen is. The glazes that I use must be fired in a kiln between cone 5-6 which is 2185°-2232°F in order to transform into this finish. I don't think polymer clay can handle those temperatures. Hope that helps. 🥰

Hi Sarah, thanks for the educative content 😊 i LOVE how you leave the bottom part unglazed, and i agree on the beautiful raw clay look & feel. Just a question for that unglazed bottom part, will it have a problem if i wash it with water? will bisque fired pottery break/be damaged after contacting with water?
@SarahWaltonPottery
@SarahWaltonPottery Год назад
Hi Reza! Thank you!! 🙏 To help answer your questions, greenware (clay that hasn’t been fired at all) will literally dissolve upon contact with water and can’t be washed. However bisque fired pieces absolutely can be wet. I actually rinse every piece once it comes out of the kiln and before I add my glazes. When a piece has gone through the bisque it vitrifies the piece but not as much as the final glaze fires does. With that said, raw unglazed clay should not be in contact with a food surface..you must glaze the parts of the pot that will hold food or drink not because it will fall apart but it won’t be food safe. I leave the lower part of the outside of my pots bare, and glaze the rest. So totally fine..by the time the piece has been fired to Cone 5-6 the piece will not have any problems with water. In fact it can go in the dishwasher and microwave and oven! Hope that helps!! 😁

Thanks for sharing! Do you wait between coats? How long?
@SarahWaltonPottery
@SarahWaltonPottery 10 месяцев назад
Yes I do! You have to wait if you want a proper application of glaze. There is no set time, but as you layer more glaze on, it take more time to dry in between each layer. The glaze will noticeably change when its dry, it becomes powdery in appearance. Wait until each layer is dry before adding more glaze. 😉

Hi Shawn! Thank you sooo much! My pottery journey began at the VAC too! It a great pottery studio and your going to love it! My advice to a new potter 🤔 Don’t give up, it’s not as easy as it looks but you will get the hang of it…master centring It’s the most important step, all forms come from it. Practice and keep practicing it, and practice more…Slow, steady hands always…pottery will teach/test your patience because there are so many elements that can go wrong along the way to a finished piece….And lastly, learn to pray to the kiln gods! 😂 🤭 let me know how you like your course 😉

Is it water proof?
@SarahWaltonPottery
@SarahWaltonPottery Год назад
Hi! Yes it’s absolutely waterproof. The glaze fire temp takes care of that as it get so hot that it vitrifies the piece making it waterproof. You can put it on the dishwasher, microwave etc. it is considered food safe because the glaze is on the food or in this case drink surface. You should NOT leave the food surface without glaze and no pin holes on the food Surface would also render it not food safe as tiny bits of food could get stuck and could cause illness if it’s not washed properly. Hope that makes sense…and thanks for your question 😊
