ABOUT ERIN

I’ve had lots of different jobs so far and while what you do is important, who you work for/with can make or break your experience at that job. I found that Good Bosses and Management are key to finding a career you like.

True! I have worked in different schools (english teacher) and so far, the best experience I have had was/is at a english school. I have worked in 4 different "normal" schools and let me tell you, that is not a fun experience AT ALL

Yes, this is true. When we start our career paths, we barely know what to expect, what we like, what is really important. We are often driven by external aspects of the job - cool office, how people are dressed, what car they drive etc. Then we try some jobs, we start understanding a bit better what we like and what we don't like. Our perception of what is a "dream" job changes. One common mistake that I see people making (and I've worked with hundreds of people helping them figure out their career) is that they see job separately from their life. So quite often they get the job they've dreamt of but they are still unhappy.

It's not fair that the world expects you to know what to do with the rest of your life by choosing a career straight out of high school. I would highly encourage you to take a gap year or two (if you can!). Work lots of different jobs, figure out what you do and don't like, and then, if you find something you want a career in, go to school for that if it requires a degree!

The thing is at this stage making big life choices is very difficult, at time you are not sure whether you are selecting a career because your parents want you to, or you want too. Planning to take a gap and explore the world as well as myself next year. Looking forward to it.

Thanks Erin! I took the career fitter test and struggled a bit through questions because at work I am very different than how I describe myself outside. At work, I am extroverted and give people safe nuggets about myself so as to not give really anything away but make people comfortable and familiar anyways. I have a job in the theater industry which I love but I don’t make a lot of money and it’s not consistent. The test really nailed it though and actually was consistent with how the people I work with see me. I would like to find an additional job that I can support myself financially so I’m thinking of paying the 20$ for the full report because I’m not really sure what jobs are even out there. Sorry this was long just wanted to share in case someone an relate. Thanks as always for the advice, Erin!

Such tests are actually at best useless, at worst - slot you into a box and don't recognize that people change. While it is helpful to understand yourself through some tests like MBTI, DISC etc., they cant' give you an answer what to do and what type of job you will enjoy. No test can do that. It's a complicated journey. I am speaking from experience as ex-HR manager, top-manager in global companies and executive coach who supported over a hundred of clients in overcoming their career challenges.

It's actually really 'funny', my current aim is actually just getting a regular 9-5 or 6, similar to what you described for 'bob'. My line of thought is this, I've seen way too many people regret, die early, have mental health issues etc, even in their 30s and 40s before they can enjoy the fruits of their labour. Been called lazy, unambitious for that, but is it really? Or it's just a different manifestation of ambition that perhaps people want, but are not brave enough to pursue? I did my share of 16-18 hours days on my own for 3 years straight out of university and loved it, but it burnt me out. I thought about it for awhile and have decided to take it easy, prioritizing time for my hobbies, life & health in general while still earning a respectable pay. It may change a few years down the line, but that's what it is right now.

Get a different job that you reasonably like that allows you to survive but also leaves enough time to develop and follow your passion in your free time. Once your music career starts getting you an income to survive on and needs more time/effort to excel, quit the "supporting" job. Easier said then done and it's hard work, but this random stranger here believes that you can do it.

I’m so glad I found this channel. I’ve been struggling with finding a career and establishing my life. I’m 31 but the thing I originally wanted to do didn’t work out because I was never able to finish school. I feel like I wasted so much time and I need to find a job that doesn’t require college because that’s not something I can afford and I wasted so much time already

I've had a few really good jobs and awful ones too... but i always feel I LOVE WORKING. I think keeping busy makes me happy. I could just do hobbies instead you say? I'm taking a sabbatical at this very moment and with ALL the free time in the world, i really miss work. Cant wait to get back to it next year!

graduated with a CS in graphic design with a minor in art history and costume design in 2021. I don't want to be a "graphic designer" and make magazine layout. I wasn't allowed to have social media so I'm still learning how that works and I can develop that skill! I would love something creative. Currently an OM at a small construction franchise. Trying to wow people at corporate and hopefully get an in to their creative department! I'm also trying to start editing and posting content around fashion and beauty. I just don't have any energy to give after the usual 9/10hr day!! I'd like to negotiate somehow to reduce my hours closer to 30 to pursue hobbies and passions and feel like a person again. At this company I'm the only one on customer communications, on/off boarding, financing information and applications, and I order materials for the crew, organize team events and training and strategize with owners and gm to maximize output of the company. Never thought I'd be in this role! I like it, I just want my life back! There's no way to reduce hours though if it's just me :(

I want to study psychology and possibly work in the research field, I know that this is what I want to do but there's so much fear in it? I know you can live a comfortable life like that, I don't need to be a millionaire, I just want to live comfortably but I get so paralysed. I've already dropped out of two majors because it just wasn't for me, I've always had psychology in mind but been terrified if it's too much or whatever... I hate feeling like that.

There is no such thing as a dream job Erin. The rest mind rebels against monotony and going to the same place, seeing the same people,and doing the same things 8 hours A day, 5 days a week is deeply monotonous and the mind will rebel against this enforced monotony by developing addictive behaviours, like eating too much and getting drunk on the weekend. Personal relationships will become abusive as each person will be too frazzled, anxious,exhausted and stressed to pay attention to the other. The modern world has swapped psychological comfort for physical comfort. What is the use of having for example plenty of food reliably available, but you are consumed every day by exhaustion, stress and insecurity? In my experience the vast majority of people spend mon-fri counting the hours down to the weekend get intoxicated on Saturday and spend Sunday evenings dreading Monday morning.

My father had want everyone considered a great job. This ' great job' with its tremendous responsibility eventually wrecked his health and he had to take early retirement at 57, by 60 he was dead.

she lost me at digress. The womans right I don't dream of labour. People don't pay you to lay about. Unless you work for the government. Even then it is not all sunshine. A hobby is a hobby. Once you turn it into an income it becomes work. As in labour. I think she has become lost in a blonde moment.
