LOL sounds like my coworkers, you know the ones who refuse to show up at the office because efh is "more productive". The ones who always miss deadlines and email you reports at 3:30 on a Friday which then results in you spending the entire weekend working in order to meet your deadline.
I legit got a rejection email SIX MONTHS after applying. I didn’t even remember applying until they sent me that damn email. Like, the rejection was pretty much unspoken. Why even send it?

I work in marketing. I was worried about AI taking my job and i learned everything I could, earned certificates … then the company’s entire content marketing department was “dissolved” and offshored to India. So there’s that.
Switch companies then, if possible. If you have unskilled, you shouod be an appealing candidate. Make sure to emphasise on the fact that you have these qualifications in these skills!

My current job, which is just part time, I walked in as a customer, saw a hiring sign and filled out an application. A few days later, I was called, set up interview , and then hired on the spot. This is how it used to be! I'll be 50 this year, worked since I was 16 and never had issues getting a new job until the last few years. It's been insane!

Blue jobs are because companies have gutted their training budgets and expect everyone to go spend money on learning a craft to potentially land an available job. Yet without a job you can't afford to go to school. Not to mention how long these colleges milk the training. trying to make classes and work these strange schedules are a struggle. Years past a company would find someone they feel good about, take a chance and train this person in house, and they would train the future generations and it would proceed this way for years to come. Well companies no longer invest in training, nor do they try to keep employees long term to train future employees. So get out your dart board, through at a college catalog and pray by the time you graduate that field is still in demand.
Every single job I’ve gotten since my first job out of college has been through my network. I’m an introvert. It sucks but networking and maintaining relationships long term over your career is absolutely crucial.
I definitely get this. I worked so hard networking when I went back to college because I was 5-10years older than most my classmates. But most of it started in person or another connection experience like conferences. But then COVID happened, and after 6 months being all virtual and being new to Online networking like LinkedIn in I was out of my element and also taking a hard certification that I really needed in person for...so I stopped, then had a baby. My LinkedIn in was set-up with my student email and after 2yrs I finally thought I should check...😖 To discover it was deleted from inactivity. I got depressed after "confinement" and realizing I couldn't get back 90%of my networking. So here it is 2024 and after battling depression I started to do LinkedIn and create a presence but I feel in over my head. Wish I knew how to network online and not feel so not "relevant". 😮💨
Sucks if you want to change careers and don't know anyone in the new field, though. Everyone I know is in the medical field or hospitality, which are not remotely close to what I'm looking for
People aren't lying. The job market absolutely SUCKS nowadays. I was unemployed for 9 long months before finally getting a new job earlier this year. The oversaturation of spam, bots, and scam recruiters, as well as the overuse and overreliance on flawed applicant tracking software (ATS), not to mention just in general just how absolutely absurd application and job hunting processes have become over the years. If a company requires me to not only create an account to apply to a job, plus requiring me to FILL OUT THE INFO BOXES AGAIN even after uploading the resume, as well as taking 20 MINUTES of my time, then forget it! You already lost me! It's tough out there folks!
In terms of AI replacing jobs, you guys overestimate how good AI is. If your work is quite extensive and especially requires fine detail such as lawyers and programmers, AI is going to make enough mistakes that it just isn't worth using.
It's the hard lesson corporations constantly learn. Offshoring and H1B pains were experienced too, then corporations learned that those arent as much of better options as they expected. AI will go the same way.
I think one to point out too is that AI, especially in programming, can make these really subtle errors that can compound but also take hours upon hours to debug. For more complex tasks, it can take longer than if you just read the documentation and figured it out for yourself. There also is no guarantee that AI is going to grow into this sentient force that will replace all labor. Building an AI also is not easy, it takes hundreds if not thousands of hours to build out a database to feed it, not only that but you have to then hook it up to your application and make sure you have the infrastructure to train it and make sure it is running fast enough to be usable. AI is not some magic wand that you wave to get results, it is a very rigorous system to develop and implement into current applications. It should also be noted that the amount of GPU energy it takes to train AI is expensive so if you expect AI to just get better and better it will soak up an exponential amount of energy and data that at some point will just not be feasible. I really think AI will raise the bar but I think this bubble will pop when it begins to stagnate, which isn't a sure thing but I'm convinced at the moment it will.
@machinedreams9625 Just call it what it is, a very fast Jr. Developer that you teach. Just don't be surprised how quickly it learns. From your concerns it sounds like you havent tried it. Use Win+C if it is not built into your IDE.
My husband is 59. He has a PhD in electrical engineering. He was laid off after 20 plus years in Feb. He's been in contact with 2 recruiters and hasn't had one interview. Just a quick edit- DH is a science/manufacturing consultant who has25 patents, a background in product development, black belt in statistics, FDA regulations, and working with manufacturing and QA. He's got great communication and can make complex systems easy to understand.
I'm 52 years old with a MS in Computer Science and 25 years experience in Software Engineering. Employers kept giving me the "over-qualified" excuse they use to hide age discrimination. I removed my college graduation dates from my resume' and removed 12 years of experience. I immediately started getting interviews, and I was hired within a month. Maybe give it a try? Good luck!

I’ve been trying since January and my job is so toxic it’s starting to negatively impact my mental health and emotional stability. I can’t even eat at work because my nerves are so bad there. 600 applications I have put in since January and only 6 call backs none that have requested a follow up interview. 😢
I'm in the same boat. I have applied on average to 5-6 jobs/ day for the past 2 months and have only had 1 interview that turned out to be some webinar scam. To complicate matters, I live in California which has the 2nd highest cost of living and would become destitute within a month if I quit. My mental and physical health is suffering as a result of being trapped at my toxic job so yeah This job market is truly a dystopian nightmare 😢
Even though the jobs I've been applying for are all server/food service positions, it's still proving impossible. Even with 5 years experience as a server, bartender, and barista. After getting laid off from my barista/bartender job, I applied to 40+ restaurants earlier this year when I lived in Austin, and only got 2 interviews after 2 months. I ran out of money even still, and had to move back home. I've now applied to 35+ places and though I've secured about 6 interviews, I still have yet to be given a job offer. Job security in the service industry was never something I had to worry about until this year. I wish I could say this was only a problem for ppl with cushy office jobs. Like, it should not be seemingly impossible to get a restaurant job, especially with my experience.
Very similar issue for me in Vancouver. Even roles like bussers and hosts are incedibly competitive right now and restaurants are gtting hundreds of applications per listing. And yeah I've gone to 100+ restaurants in person. Eventually managed to find PT work food running but damn this is crazy! Big step back
After 5.5 months looking for a job in marketing (email, social media, copywriting), I finally landed a great job. I did apply through Indeed and luckily received a response pretty quickly. I applied to about 55 jobs and got 6 interviews and one job offer. It definitely challenged my confidence, but it also taught me a lot. Don’t give up if you’re still looking for work, but also be open to pivoting and maybe even doing your own thing.
… The problem in UK is that almost all jobs posted require you to have experience for that position (years of it) even if you want to change your career your options are limited to pretty much only coffee shops and restaurants at the moment and I really wish I was joking about it. @@Megan6772yes this started to be an issue back then, but Erin saying companies now hire based on skills not experience doesn't seem to be true in Europe. 90% of jobs require you to have 2+ years of experience in the ad. At best it's sales in a supermarket or a similar store for miserable pay.
Well ive gone for 100s in Hospitality and Retail. And with experience in the industry for years example years in Starbucks but didn't get interview for costa. Ive always had work till unfortunately my last one ended. I feel like also 100s are going for low entry roles and I'm getting to a point i feel they also hire young people over me. So the search is ongoing been 3 months first time im experiencing any length out of work.
The government should criminalize ghost job ads and introduce new laws to take over hiring. Companies can then notify the government if they need new employees, and the government can supply the oldest most marginally acceptable unemployed and force businesses to hire them. This way, businesses won't be able to turn people into "unemployables" because of age or lack of work. This would give tremendous power to potential workers and employees and eliminate A LOT of bad acting on the part of companies. We need A LOT of new pro-worker laws to increase bargaining power.
I think so, too. The freedom granted to organizations there can be tremendously abused. They do not have any accountability towards applicants. At the same time, the freedom of unemployed people is considerably restricted unless they are already wealthy, unemployment is always frowned upon, and the unemployed person is at scrutiny, although their unemployment is largely due to the overall system excluding them and others occupying the positions. It already starts with the hidden job market where people are only eligible for these positions through connections. These networking mechanisms lead to extended nepotism.
I agree with the government banning ghost jobs but I don’t know about government doing the rest of that, I don’t trust the US government to be effective and trustworthy

My husband has 25 years experience in restaurants, 15 of which is in management, but he struggled for months at the beginning of this year trying to find a job. All the tech layoffs apparently led to managers from other industries being hired to run restaurants
That explains it! I've been wondering why restaurants are such dumpster fires nowadays where service is nonexistent, food is worse than before, and drinks are made by "bartenders"/mechanic/remodeling contractor...

Tech is not oversaturated because people migrated to it. Tech is oversaturated because everyone went to the cloud and began using infrastructure as code en masse meaning 1 guy could now do the job of 10. At it's peak, nearly 20% of tech jobs were vacant during lockdown. Companies responded by simply not hiring when they realized they could just work their workforce harder because most tech people are numbers people; we saw the numbers and stayed put because we knew getting a "better" job was a fool's errand. I lost my job back in October 2023; still looking for anything I'm not simultaneously underqualified and overqualified for...
Just out of curiosity: if it cost the companies money to post jobs on a job board, then that means that the job board makes money when the company continues to post jobs. Kind of like dating apps make money when you keep swiping. Is it possible that the job boards are incentivized to prevent the companies from finding good fits?
They should raise their prices for postings until the quality goes up. Right now the job boards are destroying their brands and people are going to stop using them.

That's not correct. In the US, people are classified as unemployed if they are out of work, have actively looked for work in the past 4 weeks, and are available to work. This is regardless of how long a person has been unemployed. Where it can get tricky is that some people give up looking for a job after a while, and you have to be looking for a job to be considered unemployed.

It definitely doesn't count people who were laid off from 2 yrs ago & could not obtain a job. I believe that stat should be more like 4-5% unemployed. I never believe 2%.
@@jessiesscienceonline29 I don't think you understand what the OP meant...most states have an unemployment threshold of how long you can be on those benefits before they run out. Typically it's 6 months. The data only counts those who are on those unemployment rolls. So...when you drop off the rolls you're not counted anymore. Just because someone is looking for a job doesn't mean they're unemployed. Only official employment rolls dictate what the unemployment rate is and I can guarantee it's higher than what we're being told.
I think you might underestimate your audience, those videos can be as nerdy as it can get for you. There are enough people to appreciate that, it does not have to be all high energy funny at all times!
Finding a job now, >80% of postings are for senior positions, entry level positions require way too many skills and in a good proportion of cases, 3 different domain expertise... and they are merely paying an entry salary, lol. (I am in data science, so this would be: hiring a data analyst, but asking for a data analyst/scientist/engineer all-in-1 who is good in IT [5-10+ y btw] and has specific domain expertise too) it's mad. I have experience using AI tools and also machine learning libraries in python, but still nada. I dont like phone calls, but i try to pick up, just to find out it's yet another financial advisory firm or opportunity, it sucks man, those vampires are the only ones perpetually hiring.
This is the main thing I keep running into. Every time I see a job posting it’s either really good with 1k+ applicants or it’s calling the role an entry level position but wanting a degree/experience and offering way below market value. It’s exhausting
I'm currently working at a job that I'm not satisfied with and don't want to continue in. I've been debating with myself whether I should turn in my resignation letter or not since I have been applying to many job postings, but I wouldn't hear back from them until months later with what has become the usual response of "Thank you for applying but...." and don't want to be jobless, but don't want to be stuck where I am now.
Just keep looking for a job until you get one because I have left a job before getting another and it took 5 months to get an offer but I tried to negotiate on salary and they pulled the offer then 2 months later thankfully a company I used to work with decided to reach out and hire me. This job market rn especially for corporate high paying jobs is really competitive and not having an income is more stressful
Chances are, you already have some AI skills. A lot of existing tech is currently being rebranded as AI (which is misleading). More often than not, however, when someone says “AI,” they are referring to LLMs (large language models). If you can use an LLM, like ChatGBT, you should be fine. If your job is asking if you can create an LLM, that’s an entirely separate matter.

Sure, Shannon(!)Within 18 months, I never once changed my CV despite getting advice from many other people who all have their own CV advice which changed my CV in terms of that. Thanks for the advice(!) I was there with 3 degrees and no job because of a broken recruitment system. Facts: Not everyone's great at their jobs. And no-one believed me. Been looking for only one month, but there are jobs with more than 1000 applications in less than one day, if you write to the head f departments you don't get a response, it doesn't even appear to be seem by them, as you don't get the "viewed" badge on it. I'm opening my own thing I guess, plus, if you add all the digital "paperwork" to apply to most offers, is very time consumming, you have to sign up on different platforms, load your resume in his forms, and you never know if it was worth at least.
I have been trying to land a work from home job. And it has not been easy. I have seen a lot of ghost jobs from a lot of companies. I have applied to about 600 jobs and out of those 600. I would say I only landed interviews for about 10. Most of those interviews the company already had a candidate that they were going to hire internally. At the end of the day, they don’t care that you have to take time to learn about the company and prepare for that interview. Some emails I have gotten for updates on my application just close the job posting altogether without interviewing anyone. Times are definitely very different now than they were before with the whole application and interviewing process. The more I inform myself with articles and with videos like this, it frustrates me more to know that it’s all a game at the end of the day. Bigger hoops to jump through . The more the internet grew, the more cutthroat the process became. When people my age graduated college, job applications pretty much had shifted to all online.

What if you’re in bad terms with people.. what if the only people you know are in industries that you have no interest or background in… I thought this country prioritizes independence and individualism, not collectivity and relying on each other
I've been applying and interviewing every freaking day since before March of this year; and it has been a nightmare and very discouraging. I can honestly say I've been losing hope for employment where I'm at and have started looking for places that will assist with relocation. I believe the 'great resignation' has more to do with certain industries trying to tell you you HAD TO get a certain thing that a lot of people couldn't take, and they did not respect religious exemption, etc... I left the healthcare field the end of 2020 and am just now looking to possibly get back into it. I'm also looking to get my Master's Degree in AyurVeda & Integrative Medicine to hopefully make a difference in the healthcare field.
Many Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) already use AI and it's not making these computer systems better. AI is useful for certain things and it is important to embrace AI to an extent, but AI is not as smart as people give it credit for. AI often hallucinates, spitting out information that's incorrect or perceiving patterns that don't exist. Having a human review AI outputs is very important.
AI makes my work harder... It's just an excuse for companies to pay less money. I have decided that I won't purchase or consume anything from a company that uses AI. And I mean it.
These things are prediction models at best. They're not actually thinking. I'm not saying the tech won't be disruptive as it advances, but Sillicon Valley's hype is overstated. We don't even understand the nature of our own consciousness and we think we can make AI sentient?
Yeah, I am watching this absolutely scared out of my mind to graduate with my master's into this economy. I am so freaked out that I actually applied and was accepted into a second masters program (first masters was free) to study a field with much more indemand skills. Now the 8 months between those programs are hanging over my head, because I have no idea how I will find a job that isnt food/retail for that short of a time.
The real issue with companies is one that's been going on since I got out of college and they raised the retirement age. They don't want to train anyone. They don't want anyone who needs a job. They want people that are already highly trained and they can steal from another company that has already trained and broken them in. And they want those people to be stupid enough to where they won't realize or report all the oppressive (and sometimes illegal) stuff they're doing. That's why I started working for city government. At least cities want good, bright people. Best decision I ever made.

A video suggestion would be something like "Networking 101" or "Mistakes or misunderstandings about networking" etc. It may include things like, how to identify who to reach out, how long to wait before follow-up, and when it is time to move on and close the door. Not an economist, but I have my degree in economics. Just wanted to say there is a misconception about inflation. Inflation is not an inherently a bad thing. It’s actually a good thing. Assets hold value and you need inflation to make those assets go up in value overtime. However, wages need to increase with inflation. Which is not happening that is the issue. People need to get paid more because the cost-of-living increases due to inflation. Anyways, I really enjoyed this video.
First.. I dont care WHAT stats say.. its well above 4%. There are a crap load of people no longer looking, living on savings and not on unemployment, retired early (and probably barely getting by), etc. ALL of those are not counted. That said.. when someone says "someone who knows AI is going to take your job".. does that primarily mean software developers who code the bits that make AI work.. OR people who use AI tools like Chatbot and such.. are going to take your jobs? Also.. I think this job market with AI is MUCH MUCH worse than 2008 was. Exponentially worse. It's affecting so many more job markets.

Haha, any qualified candidate should get an interview. I get ghosted from applications where I'm a perfect fit, 100%, let alone anything less. Shit is so broken out there. It's a pure unicorn hunt out there.
Well, I found that the requirements described in the job advertisement often do not exactly mirror what is sought for internally or it is a permanent advertisement and such a position is not to be filled at that moment. I think the lawmaker should intervene there and force organizations to more transparency because this is very deceptive, time-wasting for applicants, and distorts the market.

I had a company say they were really impressed with my resume and asked for additional portfolio examples (which I delivered and even called their hiring manager to show effort), only to email me 3 weeks later saying they chose another candidate. Never even got an interview. Insane.
All so true. I made it to a final round and a transparent company.They had over 500 applicants to their job posting in 24 hours and 5 in the final. Ultimately I didn't get the job and they told me it was just because the other people they had interviewed for the final had more years and ultimately the person they chose, even though I met the requirements and they were very impressed with my background, culture fit and skills. I just think in short in tech, it is hard. Full stop.
It feels impossible because it is. We aren't trying to feel vacant Mcdonald's jobs, we are trying to work office jobs. If you live in California, you probably can't even get a Mcdonald's job.
I'm a lab technician apprentice in the US and I am being laid off at the end of 2024 because of direct shift of company money to the same industry in China.
I've been told by recruiters and my state's job placement department that i have good interviewing skills, good and highly desirable soft skills, and a good resume with quality work, and I haven't been able to find good work that I can actually afford to take for many years now since I got laid off in the heat of the pandemic, and my last interviewer ghosted me. It's rough out here. Don't have that much hope with such a huge resume gap (been trying to learn an extra skill or two and volunteering on the side when i can in the meantime), but giving up isn't really an option because I still want a shred of dignity and the possibility of forward momentum in life. It's not like i have anything better to do anyway.
It can also be worth it to network with people on the team you're hoping to get hired to! Many companies have referral programs where they bump you to the top of the list of candidates (in terms of who to look at first) if you have a personal referral.
I’m so scared about getting out of the navy after over ten years and having a degree, the job search is so overwhelming and seems like a dead end trail.
The last time I was laid off in 2022, it took 10 months to get a new job, with me regularly throwing my resume at open positions. As of writing, I've been applying for higher positions in the company I work for, AND applying for better jobs elsewhere for the last 8 months. I have averaged two interviews a month since then. None of them have said yes yet.
Think of accountants in the 90s. You had accountants that were pencil pushers but those same accountants moved into other roles that required computing. Excel never replaced accountants and if anything, it boosted this line of work with more opportunities. That’s how AI is transforming tech. Most layoffs happening now are in admin such as HR, assistants, notary, or somewhat task that can be run efficiently through AI. Markets come up and down, it’s part of the economy. Jobs come and go. Be patient and upskill.
Sometimes ghost jobs are just a legal thing, if companies have a job, sometimes they are required to post them even if they don't have an intention to fill them with an external candidate.

The restaurant industry is struggling now too because so few people are going out to eat, and when they do they are being more frugal. Companies are cutting hours with the min wages going up and fewer reservations. Source- I work in the industry
Everything you said makes sense. This job market has been the worst. I do believe it will turn, however, I don't know when. Tech is bad right now, and too many people flood into tech. Keep making these awesome videos. 🙂

I really dont think that’s what she means. Her point is that a person still fills that gap, but instead of filling the gap with talent, they’re someone who knows how to use AI. It’s still an unfortunate pattern
Calculators didn't take the jobs of mathematicians. Calculators took the job of stubborn mathematicians who refused to use them, and enabled the ones who used them to become more effective at their jobs. Sounds like you're just a mathematician that refused to learn the calculator, buddy
I have applied to over 600 jobs in the span of 2 months. Maybe got like 5 interviews at best. Getting kinda depressed to be honest. Especially when I look at the Tech jobs in my home country and I see all the good available (real) jobs.
I am at the part of the video talking about the white collar recession, and it is annoying because I work a white collar job but actually want to work in the service industry but the pay is still not livable because the wage increases came to late and I just want to get paid to do a job I want to do!
She is pretty much on point. I have zero criminal record but my work history isn't great. Either the posting is fake or they are extremely picky. I'll probably end up getting myself a couple part-time positions. I'll save up for trade school.

Can we all just collectively agree to stop applying for jobs we are in no way qualified for? Job seekers would all be doing each other a favor not to flood these companies with applications so that when we are qualified, we'll be more likely to get noticed.
@@infinitum8558 Yes, you’re right about that! The requirements for “entry level” are nonsensical. I was thinking about a different problem though - so many people applying to jobs they aren’t remotely qualified for. That makes it harder for recruiters to find the candidates who are qualified. If the job description says 5-7 years of experience is required and someone has 0-2 they will obviously not be considered. They’ll just clog up the process.
@@jtowensbyiii6018 I’m not ignoring any issues. I acknowledge there are many problems with the hiring process, including the one I mentioned above about entry level requirements being inappropriate. ONE other problem, as countless recruiters and hiring managers have shared with me over the years of my career, and publicly, for example in LinkedIn articles and posts, is that they are often inundated with hundreds of irrelevant resumes from candidates that aren’t even remotely qualified. That is *A* problem. I didn’t say it was the only problem; I didn’t say it was the worst problem; I simply said it’s *A* problem.
As a fresh graduate, I honestly find this sad. I've been applying to jobs for months and even tried contacting connections. The only company that reached out to me was the one I had to message directly through LinkedIn, kinda had to stalk who the hiring manager hehe. interview is tomorrow and I really hope this works out cuz i do not like the feeling of constantly applying for nothing.
Be patient and find a hold over job if you can 🫠 I know it’s tough out there. I was doing 70 hour weeks on DoorDash and Uber eats to break even on rent after a certain point in 9 months of unemployment after graduation
It's not impossible to find a new job right now. It's impossible to find a job that doesn't want to treat you like property by not paying you, well, demanding you work 70 hours a week. And the second they can replace you with some imported cheaper labor, you'll be forced to train that person.
"I'm waiting for a robust AI to come out that can link qualified candidates to roles" ... don't hold your breath... they're going to replace the current automatic filtering software. Best case scenario is negligible improvement in the auto-filtering process.
I hate it how in California, we have wage range postings. But it doesn’t help us when companies list it 44k-109k or 60k-120k. Biotech is full of shit rn tbh
The problem with LinkedIn is a subscription is needed to message recruiters and managers but if you're looking for a job, how do you have $50 per month to pay LinkedIn? This subscription world is killing the economy.
I literally don’t know how people find remote jobs nowadays. The market itself is so incredibly over saturated that I feel like finding a remote job is like finding a needle in a haystack

I am a Recruiter with more than 5 years experience and i was fired on August 2023 and haven’t found a single chance or if i have the companies hired someone really young or junior than me (i am 39) 😢 I am really in dispair.
