Ive been asked many times to make a recipe video - so here it is.
Like many other people, i work with approximate measurements and through the experience of knowing what works and what doesn't.
I don't have the patience or dominant left brain to sit there and weight paint.
After pouring for quite a while you learn to sense the right consistency of the paint, but
there are also some clear indicators that help make this possible and get consistent results for beginners too.
The Bounce Test:
In the video - I point out the "bounce " of the paint - when the paint bounces down and up on the pop stick - this is a great indicator of an awesome consistency and stretchy-ness.
You don't want a small bounce or a drop (no bounce) this indicates the paint is too thick and it can separate or break down when stretching.
If its too thin - it wont stretch up and down - it will just break the stream.
The bounce should be from quite low to quite high - see in video.
The "mound" when dripping the paint into the top of the cup... this should be visible but disappear quickly. (see video)
You don't want the paint to create a down dip in the surface of the cup - this indicates your paint is too thin and you will likely create lots of mud and weak lines.
On the opposite end of the scale - You may also see a fat mound on the top of the paint cup that takes a while to disappear, this indicates the paint is thick and it will not be as stretchy.
Thickness can be flexible - but you don't want to be too thin.
RECIPE:
The "Recipe" is in the video, and i recommend the visuals... but as a basic guide:
Start with 50/50 paint to Extender - For the purposes of this video, an Extender is anything you use to extend your acrylic paint - Floetrol, Pouring Medium, Owatrol etc
As you mix - look for the "Bounce Test" and the "Mound", keep adding extender (bit by bit) until you get the Bounce and the mound right.
This can be done to any brands or colours. I suggest doing 1 cup first of a particular brand - then you will have a greater idea of how much extender will be need for the other colours in that brand.
Keep in mind that some times transparent colours can need less extender than opaque colours as they tend to be thinner, but
If you put too much extender - don't panic - you can add more acrylic paint, if you put too much acrylic paint, don't panic, you can add more extender! Easy Fix!
In the end - This recipe works out to be an approximate 1/3 acrylic to 2/3 floetrol + a squeeze of liquitex pouring medium.
If you are wanting cells, or other effects - there will be further No Measure Step by Step Videos for this coming up soon.
But this is like the foundation course of a Basic No Mud Recipe and we will build onto it from here.
Thanks for watching, leave suggestions or let me know what you think or want to see in the comments!!!

There are 1 billion recipes out there guys, you have to find one that is simple, cost effective and most importantly - one that consistently WORKS! NO point trying to save money on ingredients if you are scrapping every 3rd or 4th canvas!?! It defeats the purpose. This recipe also keeps the integrity of the paints very high so they can be used a 2nd or third time without splitting or breaking down. I use paints from the table and paints that have been standing for weeks. I very rarely have to get rid of any paint because it all gets used. In answer to the "water" questions - i dont generally use water in my recipe. I might add a little water if i have left over paints that have had time to evaporate a bit, but i still always add more medium/floetrol to those too. By not using water in the first recipe you can generally get extra use out of the left over paints without compromising the integrity of the pigments and binders. I realise many people add water to save some money, that's a personal choice. The small amount of money you save from using water isnt worth the headache of an unpredictable painting to me. In the end we dont save any money when we do a bad painting or when we have to throw our paint out because its turned to mud on the table. I find just using the floetrol or mediums to have much better consistent results and it all probably works out the same in the long run (more expensive ingredients but less wasted paint). If you really want to, You can swap out the last bit of floetrol/medium in this video for water (only add half the amount in water). Keep in mind - adding water can create different effects, more paint splitting/curdling, and less predictable results, it waters down your colours and can weaken the paint binders. It is still safe to add water if you use it very sparingly, but if you are having trouble with something like cells etc, try taking the water out and see the difference. I used to use water every time i mixed paints, not anymore, and i have found the consistency to my paints has been much, much better. Open to opinions or perspectives, share them all. 👍😀

It is great to find you are an Aussie (I’m in Perth). Thank you SO much for this video. I am relatively new & most pours are scraped, some have kinda worked more by luck than knowledge. I now have a better understanding of the consistency which I’ve struggled with, I’m still in the kindy stage of 8x 10 canvases. Looking forward to your next tutorial 💕

I appreciate your time in putting this together and look forward to your other tutorials. I personally use the glue/water mixture for pouring medium and thin with water to consistency, since the floetrol is fairly expensive and not meant to thin paints.

yeah - ive tried glue recipes before - they can be great, but i find the floetrol more convenient. Here it is about the same price as a Glue mix. 👍

This is the very best video ever on mixing. Very generous! I wished I would have seen this when I first started. Anyways I figured it out on my own. It made me really angry at first, when it didnt work out on the first three trys, as I am an artist of many different kinds of art and couldnt accept defeat. Anyway I love it now and I'm hooked. Your video came up in my feed a week after I started making videos basically documenting my art work. My videos are of my art work but they are not tutorials. Your art is particularly wonderful. Your not just trying to make something happen as most do, you are making art and I respect that.

I’ve been a subscriber to your channel and am always curious to see what you’ll try next. You’re definitely adventurous and sometimes come up with some cool ideas. Thank you for making this video. Perhaps it would bear mentioning that it would be good to strain Floetrol before mixing it with paint. I strain mine twice. Once into a large cup, and then a second time into a more manageable-sized bottle for storing and use in pouring. The large gallon could be a bit awkward and heavy for me. I use just an ordinary little strainer from the dollar store that’s large enough to sit on a 9 oz cup during my first straining, then on a small funnel which I use in my second pass at the strainer. I didn’t used to strain my Floetrol and ended up with many lumps in my pours, which resulted in wasted paint and Floetrol, aside from a not-so-pretty painting.
