Off-road u-turns on an ADV motorcycle are a fundamental skill that every off-road rider should master. While they can be challenging, you will learn in this video the right techniques needed to maneuver your adventure motorcycle effortlessly through. So, let's break down the three main ingredients that will help you nail those U-turns with finesse!
1. Momentum:
Maintaining optimal momentum is crucial during U-turns. Insufficient speed can cause your motorcycle to lose balance and tip-overs, while too much speed often takes you offline and wide in your attempt. This video will guide you through finding that perfect balance of controlled momentum, by mastering the delicate coordination of clutch, throttle, and rear brake. This skill will allow you to flow through U-turns with ease and confidence.
2. Body Position:
Using your body weight effectively as a counterbalance plays a vital role in maintaining balance and control during U-turns. We will demonstrate the correct techniques for positioning your body in each segment of the U-turn. Prepare to learn the secrets of proper body positioning that will elevate your U-turn game to the next level.
3. Vision:
Harnessing the power of target fixation is an important ingredient in a successful U-turn. We'll show you how to effectively scan your surroundings, focusing on key reference points that help guide your motorcycle through the turn. Sharpening your vision skills will enable you to anticipate obstacles, select the ideal line, and maintain a smooth trajectory throughout the U-turn. Get ready to unlock the secrets of expert vision techniques!
Throughout the video, you will get step-by-step instructions and insightful tips to help you develop the necessary skills for mastering U-turns on your adventure motorcycle.
Whether you're a seasoned rider looking to fine-tune your skills or a beginner eager to tackle off-road turns, this video is tailored to help riders of all levels excel in their journeys.

Side Note:
These agility & skills courses/exercises are designed to help develop the fundamental riding skills of clutch, throttle, brake and active balance by the rider.
Precise practice in coordinating these techniques can lead to instinctive/reflexive actions by the rider and allow for more precise control of the motorcycle.
Mastery of these techniques allows the rider to more smoothly transition the bike when cornering as well as being able to react reflexively when encountering unexpected changes in surface traction in off road conditions.
Depending on your skill level, you may want to make the courses larger to feel more comfortable while you develop these skills.
Performing these exercises carries a risk of dropping your motorcycle which may result in damage to you or your motorcycle. Always be sure that your bike has the proper crash guards and that you also wear the appropriate protective gear.

Hello Silvia! Welcome to the channel. 👍🏻 Hope your U-turn practice goes well out there.

Thanks for another great video! Very well explained. As a shorter rider with limited arm reach, when doing tight U-Turns on a big bike e.g 3.5-4m, I find that just moving the hip to the side isn’t enough to well balance and control the bike in a relaxed manner. Instead, I move my hip to to the side and forward, this brings my whole upper body closer to the handlebar, making my arms relax a lot more and giving me more flexibility to balance the bike, especially at the points where it leans the most.

@advmotoskillz Год назад
Great point👍🏻I will move in a similar way way turning in soft or loose terrain and want to get some weight on that front tire to help it keep traction. 👍🏻 We all have different body shapes and physical abilities and need to find the way that works best for us.

@@advmotoskillz Thanks for your comment! I've got 1 question regarding to heels' position. In your videos I noticed sometimes you kept your heels down, lower than the foot pegs; sometimes your heels were up, higher than the foot pegs; other times your heels were neutral. The heel-down position will transfer more weight downward increasing the traction and giving riders a more stable posture. I've heard people said always kept your heels neutral or lower than the foot pegs, however I personally feel keeping my heel high make it easier for me to dominate the bike during slow-tight turns...Not sure if it's a good practice...Thanks a lot!

@@Humbalaba I think you may have noticed my heels in different positions because I am active with my ankles at time working with the bikes suspension to keep the ride smooth. That is where the ball of the foot on the foot peg position is useful. Every rider has different physical abilities and needs to adapt their abilities to their riding positions as best as possible. For instance, old injuries can lead to limited range of motion in joints and then the technique may not be “ideal”. What matters most is doing your best. I have seen a number of riders proclaiming that you can steer your bike by simply dropping your heels. I find this not to work… unless I actually move part of my body weight off the centerline to put some weight onto the foot peg.

Another master class! Thanks for the details. I am following your instructions. For slow and tight turn my inside knee hooks the seat and head, shoulder, hips shifting outside. Now problem is I can't squeeze my outside knee, which remains unattached to the bike. Therefore not able to hold the bike with my lower logs for the time being. Is it mandatory to hold the bike with lower legs all the time?
@advmotoskillz
@advmotoskillz Год назад
Thanks for your feedback on the video. Appreciate it. 👍🏻 I would say, in any technique there is the “ideal/textbook” way of doing it and then there is the real world method. The goal is to get to as close to ideal as we can. There are often limits on how close we can get do to level of physical fitness or abilities. One aspect I look for when working with a client who is struggling with a particular exercise is to evaluate if there a limited range of motion in their joints that could be improved upon to help them perform better.
@advmotoskillz

I prefer to always have my lower legs in contact with the bike. I find it gives me much more control of the bike and it allows me to not be overly tight on the handlebars. A more free handlebar is then better able to search for traction.

Glad you like the video 👍🏻. At the 42 second mark we write in the screen that it is a 6 meter U-turn. Start at size that is comfortable just to get used to how everything fells and then slowly make the turns smaller. Advanced size is 5 meter U-turn 👍🏻

I made the same but with the front break not rear, because some time I need to lean to right more and more for sharp turn, what is your advice??? Abd is it that correct or not???
@advmotoskillz
@advmotoskillz Год назад
For sure, the front brake can be used. I wouldn’t teach that method to a new rider, but if someone has good technique with gently applying the font brake it can be done. Most often, I don’t use any brake and it’s all playing in the friction zone. The benefit of using the rear brake is that the engine then pulls against it, dragging the bike along. With the front brake applied, the engine is pushing the bike and sometimes this can overwhelm the front tire traction in a turn.

What is the minimum square size for this exercise? For a GS series motorcycle, 1250GSA for example. And what is the standard for the GS cup? 5 meters? 4 meters?

5 meters for both. Be sure to check out our “GS Trophy Exercises - Motorcycle Training Skills For Competition and Adventure Off-Road Riding” if you are looking for some training ideas for the Trophy ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GWiz8XG1tcs.html

Now show us how to do the same U-turn on an off chamber hill, the high side of the hill being on your right and the low side on your left, now make a U-turn there, now that is a tough U-turn on any GS.
