Steph Curry's Off-Ball Movement Is What Separates Him - The Xs and Os Of His Off-Ball Game

Drawing The Defense

Steph Curry's combination of skill with and without the basketball is what makes him such an unguardable player. While we've seen great off-ball players in the past like Reggie Miller and Ray Allen, and we've seen great off-the-dribble shooters recently like Damian Lillard and Luka Doncic, Steph Curry is the rare exception that has mastered both.
In this video we break down the Xs and Os of Steph Curry's game without the basketball. We go into plays such as Flex Action and Split Action, as well as other miscellaneous plays to show you what exactly he's doing to put the defense in a compromised position.

Giving ALL recognition to Steph's greatness, and, acknowledging how his off-the-ball movement is indeed key to the Chef cookin' it up, I like to enjoy how it is the continual movement that is Steph AND Klay which, in the scheme of things, with Draymond always aware of where the defense didn't pick up the back-door cut, makes for the greatness that is the Splash Brothers! 🏆

I consider Steph among the top 5 slashers in NBA history. While typically those players considered "slashers" tend to be more athletic and known for aggressively dominating the rim, Steph is a high IQ player with an unprecedented motor and elite finishing ability below the rim. While not the focus of his offense, his consistency finishing at the rim and the breakdowns he creates with his off ball movement are second to none.

The NBA, like so many other sports leagues, is a copy cat league. The Warriors started the switch heavy defense, and it's now adopted by most teams. Steph and Klay shot and made unprecedented number of three's and the league is now full of 3-point shooters. Pick and roll schemes had been as old as basketball itself, and because of the advent of 3-pointers, it came back and is now used basically by every team. Warriors has great success on these movement strategies ever since 2016, but it still is not widely adopted by other teams in the NBA. Why? Curry's skills are better than everyone else, but they're not unique. I can picture similar schemes with KD, Lilliard, Harden, Booker, or even Beal achieving success. My guess is, NBA players to the last of them had been the "Man" from high school on. The best NBA players had been the best of the best and they were always relied on to score to carry the team without help. Even for unselfish players, it's against their years of training and nature that they give the ball up voluntarily, and then do the work to get themselves or teammates open. How many times did KD screen for a teammate before coming to GSW? Not many I'm sure. Every step or move they make is for the purpose of themselves scoring, or draw double teams and pass for an assist. Curry is the first superstar that embraces being the cog of an engine, an indispensable one at that for sure, but his willingness apparently is not seen from other stars. Steve Kerr deserves a lot of credit for designing the system as well. I just hope it does not end when Curry retires from basketball.

Yea, but we may not see a player like Curry anymore unless those young players specifically replicate, Steph's career trajectory. There's just so much to be practiced to reach his level. You need good ball handling skill, good conditioning to run the whole game, having great footwork to shoot off the catch and then being an on ball threat that could pullup from multiple spots. Most players even stars are missing one or two of these skillsets

@DrawingTheDefense
@DrawingTheDefense Год назад
The amount of complication that comes from that wrinkle is just ridiculous to handle. You wonder why other teams don’t adopt it but they have Draymond as a post feeder and Curry’s off ball movement in addition to Klay and that’s just a perfect fit
@holymsophy

8:37 I remember watching that in real time and yelling Dray would have found Otto!! When Curry sets a back pin like that, someone's always coming through. In yr 2 at Golden state, JTA was showing flashes of seeing the floor like Draymond. Him and Jordan Poole were looking to be Curry + Dray 2. 0. Poole kept his part of the bargain, but JTA dropped the ball. While I already appreciate what Draymond does, situations like this highlight his value more.
@DrawingTheDefense
@DrawingTheDefense Год назад
Thanks for this insightful comment. For Curry’s size, he is extremely sturdy as a screener when he screens bigger players. And I totally get what you mean about JTA showing flashes of those Draymond skills. I haven’t watched enough of him to know what caused his downfall but hopefully he can get it back

GSW is just an overall great team with offense built majority of the time behind SC30. Its scary now that when SC30 is resting, JP is taking over SC30 duties and able to execute them. Now you have two offensive threats with Klay being the X-Factor when he gets hot.. an AW who can get his own shot off, and a whole host of complementary offensive players... NOT to mention the up and coming youngters... we will expect to see GSW at least in the conference finals for the next several years if all of them stay healthy...

Great stuff. The split action with an additional screener doesn't have a commonplace name, but from watching other yters, i've heard it called a triple split, another guy called an action that was a precursor to it as "elbow boston" (Not an official name; he just called it boston because it was an action similar to what doc rivers' celtics ran). The difference between this and elbow boston is this past season kerr stacked the 3 off-ball players near the top of the key, whereas elbow boston had the passer and 3 off-ball players on opposite elbows. And i love the last play vs the cavs; amazing play. Steph created 2 wide-open layups without even touching the ball.
@DrawingTheDefense
@DrawingTheDefense Год назад
Thanks man! There’s a guy I follow on Twitter named Joe Viray, and he was the first guy I saw do analysis of that play. He simply called it modified split action. That’s one of the frustrating things about plays is that you never know what to call them and everyone has their own language in basketball. But it’s such a beautiful play
@ReCharredSigh
@ReCharredSigh Год назад
@@DrawingTheDefense i just rewatched a couple of saved videos on a private playlist i made, and realized there's a possibility kerr took the play not from elbow boston, but from the utah jazz. Jazz have a "punch" series they ran when they had hayward, and it looks very similar to this play, except the screens are set inside the arc near the elbows. (The reason i found this out is one of the videos i saved showcasing the elbow boston play from the low post got renamed to "cross | punch | twirl;" the punch refers to the utah jazz punch action)

As old as the NBA is, its always fun to seen how effective the fundamentals STILL are in todays league. Steph isn’t doing anything the rest if us didn’t learn in highschool. Its the same shit. But bc of his efficiency above the arc coupled with his annoying constant off-ball antics, AND while the opposing team may be zeroed ON Steph, they also gotta watchout for the screeners; and the screeners screening the screeners. Who can ALL dive toward the basket when the defender gets caught topside or isn’t tracking the “switch” assignment. Its a perpetual shit sandwich which works and IS guard-able, right up until it isn’t.

Jerry Rice won so many matchups because he just never slowed down over a game. Whether it was a play for him or not it was always full speed, and he was conditioned well enough that he was going as hard in the 4th as he was in the 1st. Curry does the same thing. He's non-stop all the time, and that is impossible to prepare for for a defender. When the opponent switches up defenders on him it makes it easier for Curry because no team has that many elite defenders and it means they can use the same tricks multiple times.

Why is there no illegal screen?? Its because the its called when ball handler calls the screen for his play or play for the picker. Warriors play is new and its difficult to call as it would chaos in the basketball movement. Because when you really watch it, every move is a screen. When someone tries to get inside the paint, he would encounter different opponents and would eventually look like a screen even if it was not the intention. Just by moving around in the court, it would be a screen.
