Grappelli and Grisman play "Dawgma" and "Swing '39" on a 1979 episode of the Tonight Show. Sadly, I turned off the VCR after the last song and missed recording a Grappelli-O'Connor duet of "Tiger Rag" that they played over the closing credits. Johnny Carson's reaction at the end is priceless.
Stephane Grappelli: violin
David Grisman: mandolin
Mark O'Connor: guitar
Mike Marshall: mandolin
Rob Wasserman: bass

Does it not annoy anyone how Mark O'Connor is literally a virtuoso in every instrument he plays fiddle, mandolin and guitar. One of the most gifted people alive.

Saw Mr. Grapelli in the mid 80's at The Musician's Exchange in Fort Lauderdale...got to talk to him for several minutes after the 8 o'clock show. When he realized I was leaving he asked me to stay as his guest for the 11 pm show. He had the kindest eyes and mildest demeanor but when he played his violin pure magic filled the room. At 55 years of age today, that night remains one of the highlights of my entire life. "THE MAN WITH THE VIOLIN" as he was known was a direct link from gypsy tunes with Django Reinhardt in the 30's to Yo Yo Ma and Sting. He was also an amazing pianist. Pure genius !!!

Crazy to think Mark was 18 and Steph was almost 70

"Please Welcome to the stage 4 guys dressed like Bob Ross and their lovely grandfather on the violin playing what's left of a happy tree 🌲"

I played the David Grisman Quintet album "Dawg Jazz Dawg Grass" for an old girlfriend one time and she said something I've never forgotten, she said, "these guys are having some serious fun." In all my years teaching music I always told my students to have fun, because music can be serious fun.

I remember watching this on TV. He was so hip for his age. And, he just kept getting better the older he got. If he lived to 110 he would have been unstoppable. One of my favorite musicians.

Top shelf music right there! Today's crap on the radio doesn't even compare to this!
@davidcudlip6587
Mark O'Connor on guitar adding some great back up chords. He and Grappelli went on to record some great swing fiddle duets.

Great music. I remember this particular Tonight Show, back when there was quality entertainment on late night television.

I’ve been listening to Stephane Grappelli for almost twenty years and somehow this is the first time I’ve seen an actual video of him performing

This is a great piece of music history. Thanks for posting it Jim Stripling. What an extraordinary group of musicians to be on the same stage. I got to see all of these guys in various thrilling concerts around the Pacific Northwest and Vancouver, Canada in the late 1970s. Like a couple of the commenters below I was able to meet Stefan Grappelli and chat for a minute. Apparently meeting Stefan Grappelli is unforgettable to me since that is 40+ years ago. I also remember jamming with Mark O'Connor quite a few times at music festivals in the Pacific Northwest from 1977 to 1979 or 80 when I was a banjo player. Since I wanted to eventually have a social life and a girl friend I decided to switch from banjo to guitar (badum bump - a banjo joke, they are so easy to make).
