Vizzions and Keith met while documenting the Standing Rock protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline, which, began in April 2016 as a grassroots opposition to the construction of Energy Transfer Partners' Dakota Access Pipeline in the northern United States and ended on February 23, 2017 when National Guard and law enforcement officers evicted the last remaining protesters. They discuss their experience documenting protest movements, recent efforts to suppress protest, and the increase in the misuse of force by police at protests.
Stephanie Keith is a veteran news photographer working primarily for the New York Times, Reuters, and Getty Images, with a focus on breaking news. She was a 2022 Pulitzer Prize finalist. On May 8, Keith was arrested while documenting a candlelight vigil in New York City for Jordan Neely, a homeless man who was choked to death on the subway. On video, Keith can be heard identifying herself as a press photographer as multiple officers place her in handcuffs and lead her away, with the NYPD Chief of Patrol shouting “Lock her up”.
Ryan Vizzions is an independent photojournalist who has covered the Standing Rock protest movement, many Black Lives Matter protests, and most recently the “Tennessee Three”, State Representatives wrongly expelled for protesting Republicans’ inaction on gun violence.
