With ongoing climate change effects, resilience is becoming an increasingly necessary goal for transportation systems. Major disruptions, such as wildfires and hurricanes, require the rapid movement of people away from the hazard through empirically-driven transportation response strategies. Employing a human-centred perspective, Dr. Wong will present a summary of his recent research on resilience, evacuation, and decision-making. Results from the research can help inform jurisdictions across North America to build more effective and equitable resilience and evacuation plans for transportation.
Stephen Wong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta and leads the Resilient and Sustainable Mobility and Evacuation (RESUME) Group. Dr. Wong’s research focuses on the intersection of disasters/emergencies, decision-making, and transportation and works to create more resilient, environmentally friendly, and equitable transportation systems. He is actively involved in resilience and young professional activities at the Transportation Research Board, the International Association for Fire Safety Science, the International Association for Travel Behaviour Research, and the Society for Fire Protection Engineers. Dr. Wong received his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2020.
The Sustainability Council’s ongoing lecture series explores local and global perspectives on sustainability, equity and climate action. Hear researchers and practitioners from the University of Alberta and beyond in fields ranging from engineering to ecology, public health to poetry, and native studies to nanotechnology.
The University of Alberta acknowledges that it is located on Treaty 6 territory and respects the histories, languages, and cultures of First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and all First Peoples of Canada, whose presence continues to enrich our vibrant community.
