John Kay, the songwriter, had bought his wife a new stereo system and they were both sitting in between the speakers listening, and he wrote this song in 15 minutes. He was referring to his wife as the little girl. She was about 25 years old at the time. That is the problem of judging things in the past by today's standards.

This song is 55 years old now from 1968. With the right sound system it still sounds really good especially the bass, keyboards, and rhythm guitar. The Beatles used "Little Girl" as a lyric in a few of their early 60s songs if I remember correctly. That's probably why it didn't bother my generation too much. I saw Steppenwolf in concert a few years later like 72 and when they tried to introduce their new material the audience demanded they play their earlier hit songs and so the band stopped and started playing those older songs.

Early rock was influenced by the blues so you get phrases like 'little girl' and 'backdoor man' and 'killing floor' and 'my rider'

Vernacular changes over time. "Little girl" isn't referring to anyone under age. It's a colloquialism refering to a young attractive woman of eligible attraction. Men used to refer to their girlfriends as "Babe/Baby". It wasn't a chop, we knew it was someone we wanted to protect and provide for.

Around 1989 or '90 I was fresh out of art school and there was a classic rock station offering tickets to see Steppenwolf to the winner of a fax in contest. I drew a picture of a guy riding a magic carpet and won the contest for a pair of tickets to see them at a small venue. It was a fun show! Great memories.

This was one of my favorite tracks in my sophomore year of highschool, some 5 years after it was released. I would come home and play it on the hi-fi down stairs in the basement, where I could get away with cranking up the volume . Some seem to think this has to do with psychedelics, while others seem to think it's about a motor cycle ride... I don't know about you Maddy, I think it's probably a little of both.

Well just a story at 14 years old tripping balls and helping my uncle install a whole new flooring at my grandparents house. Asbestos? Whats that? Anyways this was a band and i followed instructions , and it came out great. Acid and music and a good foreman made it so.

Saw them at a free show for the troops at an Airmens Club in Denver 82. They put on a great show for us. Check out Born To Be Wild and The Pusher.

Saw them twice, always a great performance. The last time I saw them John Kay was dressed as a Motorcycle cop when he came on stage. The sky filled with bottles flying at him on stage, and he turned and ran off the stage, taking his cop uniform off. Great show. Rock Festival "West Palm Beach Festival" 3 days of great music, Rolling Stones closed the festival.

I was born the year this came out. Some great bands and songs came out in the 60's and 70's. LSD created some amazing music thanks to the Vietnam war. Listen to Hand of Doom by Black Sabbath. They wrote this song after playing a concert for American Soldiers recovering in Germany and listening to their experiences.

Hello Maddy, I think communication of feelings evolves over time and ideas expressed thru words change as they are interpreted with contemporary understanding and usage. In order to understand the intent of the author I try to ask myself “Do I think they would choose the same words if they rewrote the line?” Today I believe they would avoid using “little girl” because of the reasons you mentioned; I don’t think it fits the intent of the song. You are entitled to your feelings. I have 2 daughters 25 and 27 and I call them "Little girl" now and then with great affection which they like. It's hard to use today's language meaning and understand what was meant then. Hell, "gay" use to mean Happy and "queer" meant just different not in a negative way. "Fag" was a cigarette in British English and had absolutely nothing to do with sexuality. It was used in a way that has no resemblance today.

They were probably looking for a word that worked with the music. It had to fit the melody line and have the right meaning. "Madam" wouldn't do the trick. Way too formal for the song's intent. Maybe "pretty girl" would have worked. Or "lovely lady." I don't know. It's tricky writing a song. :-) o

In this case, it sounds like it was used to keep the cadence of his rhyme. No offense meant, just an observation. They were a favorite early jam band that had many hits, tho my favorite by them in Monster, a great song about America at the time. Love your reactions.✌️❤️🎶

The whole “little girl” thing goes much further back than SteppenWolf. It has roots in the blues. Of course it is anyones right to be offended by the usage and I don’t use the phrase because it is now considered offensive to a woman. But really it unfortunately shows how an endearing cute phrase that once was used in an innocent way as admiration for the girl you fancied to something cringey and creepy due to the way society has became more disgusting in its thinking. Any man who surely says “little girl” must be a pervert or a pedophile, right? Rather than a weird pedo sounding phrase, the way folks minds have been conditioned by the continual exposure to media coverage of every demented thing imagined shows more about that mirror of 2024 than any offense the original intent of the phrase ever had. Great song though! Funky psych😎🎸

I recommend you check out The Pusher or Snowblind Friend next. Born To Be Wild is their biggest hit, but they had many cool tunes such as Monster, It's Never to Late, and Rock N' Roll War to name a few. Also, John Kay the lead singer is a philanthropist these days ad a great supporter and advocate for human rights and actively raises funds to support wildlife. He also wrote a great song entitled: For the Women in My Life dedicated to his mother, daughter, and wife . He says, "I believe I am a better man for the Women in my life."

Judging the past through the lens of today's 'sensibilities' is simply incongruent and brings needless and unmerited 'controversy' to one's emotional state. Best to refrain from that form of judgement, clearly. Steppenwolf is still awesome today, even though this song is some 5+ decades old.

Great, psychedelic, classic! The girl thing was the times, you find that in a number of classic tunes, you just have to understand but just not like it and move on. Great song and band in any event, these guys were more about rock with a psychedelic streak than much to do with sex. You will find their music rocking but diverse and interesting, some apply to this very day. Do Born To Be Wild for another huge hit from them. Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶

A lot of guys do get sensitive about it but the "little girl" thing DOES sound juvenile in retrospect. The 60's and 70's were very sexist even though the sexual revolution had begin with the advent of birth control. I was an extra in the movie "Hair," and when I watch in nowadays, it is unbelievable how women were treated by men. Hippies were not as enlightened as they think they were. The Beatles, Paul Simon and others began writing more maturely about women in the lates 60's but there is a way to go even today.

Warning: don't go into this thinking you're going to hear great music, with a sense of humor you might actually get some giggles. First is "Tiptoe through the Tulips"by Tiny Tim. I get what you're saying about "little girl." It comes across as creepy. We're more sensitive to certain things today that we used to be, and often that's a good thing. In this case, the song is about drugs and sex. I don't think it's being oversensitive to object to the phrase "little girl" in this context. There are a lot of skeevy song lyrics from that era. You'll run into more of them as you continue your journey. Just give your honest opinion. There's not much point in doing music reactions unless you say what you think.

Look into the abuse of Shirley Temple…Brooke Shields…Millie Bobbi Brown. 🤦🏽‍♀️ It is programming, friend. Our world has shifted not from an extreme earthquake or volcanic eruption all at once but from tectonic plates slowly inching towards a perverted goal. The band may have not meant anything by the expression personally, but the words are used to normalize something sinister to the general public. Songs, melodies and instruments are one of the few things dementia patients can remember even after their mind has gone. Consider the capability of subconscious programming music must have on the human psyche if all that a diminished mind has left is a melody or song that can be sung word for word. You don’t have to agree with me, I just hope you will think about this deeper.

Maddy, back then we were always called girls or baby or sweetheart or any PET name they came up with. And during the marriage ceremony, the man had to vow to cherish us but we had to vow to OBEY them! What was really bad was at the end of the ceremony when the couple was pronouned Man and wife. Like the husband was a MAN but we were nothing more than his wife as opposed to still being a woman! We were even given the term HOUSEWIFE like we were married to the house and were responsible for taking care of the house as well as him as our JOB!
