I’m 22. I found this album at a used discount record and book store. I had no idea who they were. I just thought their name sounded cool so I bought it. Turned out to be one of my favorite bands. Call it serendipity, idk. I just know this music is incredible and I’m lucky to have found it on a whim.
Likewise, a random path of clicks led me to this comment today, and it really made me smile. Discovering new music can be one of life's great joys, and this story is exactly how I found some of my favorite bands. It's good to know that young people are still able share that experience.
It's funny I did the same thing but it was 1994 I think. I was at a record store and liked the cover. My buddy told me I wouldn't like them but I bought it anyway. I have been a fan since.
I worked for their distribution company in the 90's ...always looked forward to anything they released...Time hasn't damped my love and enthusiasm for Stereolab...Great band...lovely people...Great music
They are utterly timeless!! They were retro and futurist in tandem. When I look back to their times in 90’s most bands who also referenced past styles, have dated very badly. Stereolab were so pure in their work, I don’t think they can be placed in a time. Superb!!!
@@YellowJelly13 I wish that were true, but unfortunately global wealth inequality has risen sharply over the past 20 years. The number of people globally living in extreme poverty has increased by millions over the past five years in particular. The Ukraine and various Middle East and African conflicts have also increased the number of war casualties in the past few years.
@@philmason9653 "global wealth inequality has risen sharply over the past 20 years" That's wrong, global GINI (inequality metric) has decreased from 0.72 in 2000 to 0.67 in 2020 (Source: Global inequality from 1820 to now, World Inequality Report) "The number of people globally living in extreme poverty has increased by millions over the past five years in particular" The percentage of extreme poverty has decreased from 90% in 1820 to less than 10% today, even going from 1900 million in extreme poverty in 1993 to less than 700 million today. (Source: World population living in extreme poverty, Our World In Data). "The Ukraine and various Middle East and African conflicts have also increased the number of war casualties in the past few years." War casualties are also at an all time low compared to previous centuries.
I saw this video on MTV's 120 Minutes in August of 1994. I thought this band was on a level way above what I usually saw on 120 Minutes. I loved it. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the name of the song or the band. Maybe I was too drunk and stoned, or maybe they didn't give the credits at the end of the video. I don't know what happened. I know that I wondered for the next 20 years what the band and song were. In 2014, I found this video on RU-vid, and I was really glad to have finally found it. I searched Stereolab's other music, and they are now one of my top few favorite musical acts of all time. They have a huge library of phenomenal music.
interesting. Happy you found them. Check out McCarthy, their former band. start with this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UnmAy4UgOhQ.html
@@HominidInterneticus, I was a metalhead, but much more into classic rock of the 60s and 70s. I still am. I wasn't generally that much into the alternative genre that was so popular in the 90s, but I did really like The Breeders, Elastica, and Veruca Salt. If I had just known that Stereolab was the group that recorded "Ping Pong" or known the name of the song, I would have taken it from there and been a Stereolab fanatic then and ever since.
I heard this song on the radio while I was digging a trench in the mid 90's. At the time I made a mental note of the title and name of the band. Some years later I sought out that song I remembered from that day and I discovered a band whose music I've loved for some 20+ years. Thank you Stereolab!
Finally saw them a few months back in Detroit - incredible show! Love them for over 20 years now! I just want the world to know how fantastic and brilliant this band is!
Hello!!! How are you doing today, please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you’re a fan ? Have a great day…Stay Safe!
I worked for café chain stores in the UK between 2018 and 2022 and the radio would always play this song... it has got a very wierd rhythm I need admit but it sounds so peaceful and melodic at the same time!
I heard this song in Chicago over 20 years ago - and right away was hooked! I've since moved on from Chicago to 3 other cities...but every time I hear this song - it takes me back to the days when I lived in Chicago, riding my bike, or walking, with this song playing on my walkman on one of my many mixed tapes...good times!
It's alright 'cause the historical pattern has shown How the economical cycle tends to revolve In a round of decades three stages stand out in a loop A slump and war then peel back to square one and back for more Bigger slump and bigger wars and a smaller recovery Huger slump and greater wars and a shallower recovery You see the recovery always comes 'round again There's nothing to worry for things will look after themselves It's alright recovery always comes 'round again There's nothing to worry if things can only get better There's only millions that lose their jobs and homes and sometimes accents There's only millions that die in their bloody wars, it's alright It's only their lives and the lives of their next of kin that they are losing It's only their lives and the lives of their next of kin that they are losing It's alright 'cause the historical pattern has shown How the economical cycle tends to revolve In a round of decades three stages stand out in a loop A slump and war then peel back to square one and back for more Bigger slump and bigger wars and a smaller recovery Huger slump and greater wars and a shallower recovery Don't worry be happy things will get better naturally Don't worry shut up sit down go with it and be happy Dumb, dumb, dumb, de dumb dumb, de duh de duh de dumb dumb dum... ah ah Dumb, dumb, dumb, de dumb dumb, de du
@@juaniriarte1193 Yes, they'd be accurate anyway, but it also seems to me that they uncannily predicted Tony Blair's theme song Things Can Only Get Better (and emphasise the irony)

Thank you Thank you RU-vid. I remember hearing this almost every night as a 14 year old in 1994 during the BBC Mark and Lard show. I really wanted to see a visual of the song. The only bit of the video I ever saw until the 2000s was the part that runs from 0:36 to 0:47 when shown on The Chart Show's Indie Countdown. Maybe it was shown on rare occasions but in hindsight these broadcasts were stokes of luck at the time. It's also too bad that there isn't much professionally recorded live performances from the 90s. Anyway. Looking forward to the reissues and gigs!
I've known and loved the song since it came out, but I've only just seen the video. Lovely to see Durrington tower on Wandsworth high street which I always thought was cool, and the Michael Faraday monument at Elephant and Castle feature. A lot of Le Corbusier too, certainly illustrations of the Unite d'habitation, anyhow, and of course the atomium. 💚

whenever I need to get back on track or back on my path THIS song is what I listen to. It is inspirational! Brings me back to the happiness I know. " Go with it ,and be happy things will get better naturally" THEY DO! Laetitia vous êtes telle une inspiration ! Hello Stereolab fans!
Anyone else unsure how they know this song? It would never have been played on any radio station in my area. I have no idea why I know it, but do and love it.
