I am grand son of a German WW2 survivor and i am very sorry for what happened - even if i was not born at the time it happened - a lot of Germans still feel very bad about all the senseless and inhumane cruelties that were done at that time and we hope it will NEVER EVER HAPPEN again. Strange enough - US-Israel would like to see NATO fight Russia... nobody wants to be evil - if traumatic crime happens - people go into FULL DENIAL mode - because they are also traumatized by their cruel deeds - this is simply psychology - at the same time it can not be denied those criminals of war - tried to talk their way out of their death sentence...

Survivor guilt is common among war veterans and sometimes the survivor is burdened with constant intrusive thoughts of the horrific nature of the event overlaid with intense feelings of guilt and grief. Mr. Domitrovich is a hero.

I remember Steve growing up. He operated a small convenience store in Aliquippa PA and was always happy and funny. I had no idea about his WW2 experience. Men back then avoided talking about their service. But I could tell there was something special about him. It is very hard to kill a noble man, even for Nazis. God was watching over him, I believe. He and my Dad were the same age and my Dad got wounded in the battle of the Hertgen Forest in October, just 2 months before this happened. RIP Steve, you were a blessing to everyone you dealt with. I could never get my grandfather to talk about the war in depth like this guy did but from what he did say it seems like he went through a similar hell. I think the most terrible memories he had he almost felt too guilty to share with anyone in the family, but he did talk to other guys that were on the ship with him. Maybe you just had to be there to really understand. He was on the destroyer escort England de635, which sunk 6 Japanese submarines in 12 days. Not long after that, the Japanese had found out and targeted the England heavily with kamikazes in April 1944. Grandpa was a Gunner and saw one coming low and fast right at him, he saw the pilot (who was dead from machine gun fire) as the plane passed over head and hit the tower. But the pilot had managed to arm the 500 pound bomb in time and everyone in the tower was killed and they nearly lost the ship to the fire. I can remember being around 10 years old and seeing a picture of the whole crew in an old box, when I noticed about half of the men had a pencil mark on their hats in the picture. I asked him why, and that's when he told me those were the ones who died in the kamikaze attack.

I guess I was lucky, my grandad openly talked about his combat experiences from sticking bayonets in Germans in close hand to hand combat to shooting them at a distance. He said it helped him cope with it, he talked a lot about being in Korea and the fierce combat that he encountered with the Chinese and North Korean soldiers. Any question I had he would answer(but only to me, being the only grandson as soon as the granddaughters walked in he would stop) I only asked about his combat experiences once or twice, I didn’t like seeing him tear up, but he would bring them up to me. I asked him before his death in 2020 why did you talk about it most vets keep it to themselves, he told me When I realized you took and interest in the war I wanted you to hear my first hand experiences so you would know what I went through instead of hearing other stories and wondering if I went through something like that.

I wish youtube had a screening process to weed out idiots, the heartless, those who obviously failed history courses in school, those with no conscience, and most of all, the persons who are sure they know everything but clearly identify by the way they write that they don't know a thing. No, it would be easier if intelligent, articulate people with an easily verifiable knowledge of history would stay away from youtube altogether. Very amusing that developers thought early on that this platform would bring people and cultures together. What it actually did was bring people and VULTURES together.

But consider that the post-war crimes in Schwäbisch Hall were, so to speak, Guantanamo 1 .... what your nation produced way before WW1 and WW2 until today, everyone on this planet knows by now,... beginnend bei der Ausrottung indigener Ureinwohner, Rassismus bis weit in die 60er Jahre....das Alles ist also keine Erfindung der Deutschen.

you believed in God ,and he chose to save you , you wish to know why you were saved alive ,to bare witness ,and there was more than one survivor , because there must be more than one witness to verify the truth of what happened ,so it could not be denied by those that would try to discredit your testimony , you believe in God ,then also believe in satan , the adversary ,who motivates men to be evil ,and is behind all war ,and strife between mankind, but as Sir Winston Churchill said before the league of nations ,there is a purpose being worked out here below , he could see the bigger picture , and eventually you will be shown the reason for all these events in your life , rather than ask God why ,thank God he saved you , though you probably already have done, I salute you ,your a better man than me .

Wow, Mary. Amazing and Im so glad he did survive. I have (Im a historian) had correspondence with a living relative of Joachim Peiper's who was initally sentenced to death for his role in this mess but was later let off the hook after basically serving 12 yrs, a part on death row, in isolation and was released b/c of the interrogation methods ect. I truly believe that those soldiers who murdered American there deserved their punishment. But, hearing from his daughter, she told me that he did not give the orders to the wicked soldiers (they say b/c this was a tank battalion, they couldn't take prisoners and that the SS there were scared, under fire and felt that b/c they were SS they were going to be shot/killed. But, that Joachim Peiper, was miles ahead of this group that captured these brave American soldiers who were taken prisoners by the tank group, did not order his men to kill these American men, that he was actually angry that they murdered these Americans and that he truly was innocent of these grisly murders. It was a fringe group in the SS tank batallion (and other passing German soldiers actually shot at these captured troops too)...but that in honor of Joachim Peiper and his legacy that he was actually a honorable, distinguished and loyal (he offered his guilt if his men could be let off the hook, like Sepp Deitrich, who was not even with the group); but that Joachim Peiper was actually a good soldier and person. Also, what was horrible was after this your this poor man was ordered immediately back into combat..crazy
@catalinpanov
@catalinpanov 3 года назад
Yes but in another RU-vid video someone says that another historian from the eastern Germany found his file in the gestapo archives in Berlin and after reading all the info came to the conclusion that Peiper was guilty and so he produced some flyers and spread them in his village somewhere in France, he tracked him down probably, and after that the villagers threatened him and eventually burnt his house and so killing him. Do you think that those documents were not accurate? I kind of doubt that, knowing how the Germans even today are documenting everything until the last detail.

My late uncle was in Patton's 3rd Army relieving Bastogne. He told me in the mid 1970's that when word of the Malmedy Massacre got out to American troops, more than a few units stopped taking SS prisoners-they just took them out in the woods and shot them. Regular German troops-the Wehrmacht-were treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention, but SS troops were often shot. It got so bad that Eisenhower had to issue an order that summary execution of SS prisoners would result in arrest and prosecution of the guilty party, that stopped most of it. There was a lot of anger and bitterness.

The SS fought hard because they knew that the allies summarily executed them. The US summarily executed SS troops too.

war is like anything else where you have a lot of people participating...you have decent folks and you have savages that thrive on killin' no need to demonize or say hooray for 'our' side just take it all for what it is...ignorance in motion.

This man admits to leaving wounded German soldiers in the middle of nowhere to die yet expects us to pity him and his comrades for the retaliation the Germans brought against him.

They had no obligation to try and save enemy soldiers. Those guys would have killed him and taken his truck at any time given the chance.

Ryan Winkelman Then there was no obligation for SS soldiers to save captured US soldiers.

It was not a Massacre. Basically the Geneva Convention says, if your a POW and you run.... wait for it...... you can be shot! Basically some GI's tried escaping by overpowering the very few guards, a melee ensued and the passing Column saw this and started opening fire as well as the Soldiers on foot following the convoy. It was tragic yes but it was a ill advised attempt at best. What US History will not tell you is that the Waffen SS present there actually treated the POW's well giving them rations and treating their wounds. This guy is full of shit.. He is part of the problem telling lies.

+JuergenGDB It is sad that he can barely recollect what happened. The Waffen SS took many prisoners.. ask some of the UK Para vets that fought in Arnhem how they were treated. I would suggest people do their research, as well as get the other side of the story. It is also of note that many US troops and UK shot Waffen SS as they surrendered too many times to count. So war is hell but the Allied Hypocrisy has to stop.. They committed numerous crimes and went virtually unpunished.

"Some of the GIs" Some is the key word, reportedly most of the men who remained still were still shot, those wounded following it, were also killed without mercy. How about the Ardenne Abbey Massacre? Wormhoudt? Le Paradis? Don't get me started on the civilian massacres by the Waffen SS.
@JuergenGDB
@JuergenGDB 8 лет назад
Nathan Peterson Don't get me started on Allied atrocities either..... Its war, and shit happens, to completely only blame one side today, is just ignorant. I could see this right after the war and up until maybe the 60's, but there is too much information out there. Just saying. Although the Germans did commit some pretty heinous war crimes, the other side, did as well. The only Theater of Operations I know of that was clean of atrocities was that of the Desert War, probably because there were not many civilians.
@peterson7082

JuergenGDB I know, but thinking the Waffen SS treated prisoners well overall, is bull.
@JuergenGDB
@JuergenGDB 8 лет назад
Nathan Peterson Well actually they did for the most part, probably more so then how they were treated. If you actually possibly read books written by them, or even their enemies at the time you would know this. There was no quarter on the East Front, but everyone know this.

Mendacious allied "truth"! There had never been a massacre carried out by german troops. Those U.S. gumps had almost surrendered but revolted against their watchdogs - so they were disciplined!
