Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris play Earle's song "Goodbye" live in concert before a sold-out crowd at the Camp Winnarainbow benefit concert at Herbst Theater in San Francisco, California on September 29, 2022. Goodbye appeared on Steve Earle's fifth studio album, Train A Comin' (1995), and then on Emmylou Harris' eighteenth studio album, Wrecking Ball (1995). Joining them in this performance were Chris Masterson (guitar) and Eleanor Whitmore (fiddle).
Earle and Harris, who were both in town for the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival, performed as part of a songwriters' circle at Toward The Fun(ds): A Concert Benefitting Camp Winnarainbow. The camp, founded by Wavy Gravy, is focused on circus, juggling, acting, and clown performance. It provides scholarships to families in need to keep the camp open to all children. To support these efforts, please visit www.campwinnarainbow.org/donate/.

Goodbye lyrics:
I remember holding on to you
All them long and lonely nights that I put you through
Somewhere in there, I'm sure I made you cry
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
But I recall all of them nights down in Mexico
One place I may never go in my life again
Was I off somewhere or just too high?
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
[Instrumental passage]
I only miss you every now and then
Like a soft breeze blowing up from the Caribbean
Most Novembers, I break down and cry
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
But I recall all of them nights down in Mexico
That's one place I'll never go in my life again
Was I off somewhere or maybe just too high?
But I can't remember if we said goodbye
No I can't remember if we said goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye

Steve Earle official bio:
Steve Earle remembers exactly when he knew he wanted to be a songwriter. He was barely a teenager, growing up in Schertz, Texas, looking over a copy of a Beatles record. “The little line in parentheses next to ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand,’” said ‘Lennon-McCartney,’ Earle says. “I said, ‘I know who those guys are.’ And then I figured out that they wrote the song. And so that was when I started, you know, trying to write songs. They all had girls’ names for titles for a long time.”
Music was a big deal in Earle’s family and his dad, an air traffic controller, played piano. “My dad wouldn’t let me have an electric guitar,” he says. As a teen, he discovered Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Paul Simon and the Johnny Cash Show. “I always say my job was invented by Bob Dylan,” says Earle. “I’m a firm believer that rock & roll only becomes an art-form because of the lyrics. If it hadn’t been for Bob Dylan wanting to be John Lennon and John Lennon wanting to be Bob Dylan, it wouldn’t have been cranked up to the level of literature that makes it OK for rock & roll to be taken seriously.”
Jerry Jeff is Earle’s 22nd album. He’s released nearly an album a year since getting sober in the mid 1990s, LPs ranging from bluegrass to blues to folk to country. One of America’s most gifted living songwriters, he is singing better than he ever has, working harder. At the moment, he’s writing two books, his second play, and hosts his long running The Steve Earle Show: Hardcore Troubadour Radio on Sirius XM. Throughout the pandemic, he also hosted Steve Earle’s Guitar Town, a RU-vid series about his massive instrument collection. “I’m just trying to stay out of trouble,” says Earle with a laugh. “If I stay busy, then I’m OK.”

Thank you Tim for these recordings. IF ONLY you did a better job on the audio. The audio feed is always available at the mixer board. And when they say no-- it is always available closer. These audio are just not good enough, such an incredible loss. Please get help with your audio it ain't that hard, every time I showed up, I got the freakin audio. Partly with my own shotgun mic, sometimes my own mic on the mic stand, etc. Always put at least two mics on any live event. Things are crazy, it's hard to get close audio but, the video is pretty useless without sharp audio. Just go right up there and put your own mic, sometimes.
@TimBracken
@TimBracken 6 месяцев назад
Hi Todd, I'm always open to ways to improve this hobby, so I welcome feedback like yours. I would LOVE to have soundboard quality sound on my videos. I want to hear which shows you've gone to where the sound engineers were willing to share the soundboard audio. I've never met a single one who was open to that. And understandably so. The soundboard audio is a prized possession. If an artist is going to release a live album or a live video, it would undermine the specialness and commercial appeal of that recording if fans could already get the same quality audio for free from the engineer. The next thing I think you're talking about is when people use special receivers to capture In-Ear Monitors (IEM) audio. Those recordings are super cool. But as I understand it--and you seem to be saying this as well--you need to be close to the stage to pick up those signals. I tend to shoot from farther back--often up in the balcony--so I can frame the shots the way I want. When I'm up close near the stage, I can't get the wide shots I want. (And it's also more obtrusive and distracting to other people when I shoot up close). You mention placing a microphone at the stage. Again, I'm always shooting in the back, so that's not really viable. Besides, most of the shows I go to, I can't even physically reach the stage because there's a barrier in the way, and I honestly can't imagine security being cool with me placing my own objects on the stage. Which shows have you gone to where they were cool with you doing that? You also suggest a shotgun mic. I'll be very curious to hear how you juggle that *and* a camera at the same time, but the way I shoot, that would simply be impossible. I use a little pocket-size Sony camera with a nice zoom lens. (The venues I go to won't allow anything bigger or fancier). It literally weighs about half a pound. So when I shoot, I have to hold the camera steady with both hands. (A tripod would obviously solve for that, but the venues I go to don't allow tripods either; there's also a camera grip, which I just ordered and am eager to test out). And at this show, for example, there was nowhere to place or rest a microphone. I was just sitting in a plain old seat in the back of the venue. A quick parting thought: you're attributing your complaints about the audio quality entirely to my camera. But I've heard lots of people complain about the sound quality at this venue (including at this show). This venue is usually only used for chamber music concerts and lectures. It doesn't have an optimal setup. And I've found that my camera records pretty faithful audio (certainly much better than most cell phone recordings I've heard). You definitely are more of an audiophile than me, so I'll share the camera specs in case you're curious: "XAVC S:LPCM 2ch, AVCHD: Dolby Digital (AC-3) 2ch (Dolby Digital Stereo Creator)" Anyway, I appreciate you watching my video and taking the time to give me your ideas. Warm regards, Tim

what great singers, but Earl is no Meryl Travis when it comes to guitar picking. Yet I suspect his guitar collection rivaled Travis' and a hundred of other pickers combined each who can pick at least half as good as Travis. But wealthy money bags who can't pick a tune buy up the decent guitars and drive prices so high to make it hard for even millionaires to afford. The millions earl has apparently earned from his singing could have also as easily carried him much futher into a Zeppelin or CSNY level superstardom if he had ever seen the relevancy of having decent guitarists as backup like Robert Plant had. Anyway, he made enough dough probably to buy a very handsome rotating guitar collection, and with the help of 10,000 other wealthy guitar novices who cant play, scoured up all the once affordable stradivarious of guitars making it to where many great guitar players have to buy China junk. Alls I can say is it would have been nice for singers like him, before famous, would have had to pay $50k for a decent mic to sing thru when they started out.

Inexpensive guitars are totally at a professional level these days. Not like the shit I learned on back in 1979, when I could have bought a 1950’s strat for $1500 but thought that was insane. No one likes collectors driving prices into the stratosphere but to say that therefore starting players don’t have a chance to get good on good instruments is total ballocks. There are a million fabulous starter instruments out there. And btw that guitar Steve is playing is recently built.
