the definitive version of Steve's Goodbye - naturally, with Emmylou... and the Irish ensemble Irish Gala Concert, Kennedy Centre, Washington; May 13, 2000 sublime... emotional...
How many times did I listen to that song, and watched this video...100 times? .... 200 times ?... don’t know, maybe more ... always with a litlle bit of pain...for what?....don’t know....
Emmylou Harris steps back from singing the "just too high" line. She has seen so many talented people waste their lives and they are not her words. She is one class act.
Holy Smokes !!! I worked on the audio crew for this show !!! This was an excellent production !!! One of my many favorites !!! Thanks you so much for posting this !!! Cheers !!
I was lucky to see Steve Earle many years ago at Jericho beach during the folk music festival. He sang this song when the sun was setting and life at that moment was perfect.
I believe Steve Earle went to Galway to retreat after getting clean. There he met and played with Sharon Shannon. Galway became very close to his heart. Emylou Harris has sang with Mary Black, the Chieftains, and Dolores Keane. So it's good to see music crossing physical and genre boundaries. I have not forgot Donal Lunny. Yes he plays the bouzki everywhere. We must not forget supreme uillean piper Liam O'Flynn passed away this year. He and Donal played together in Plantxy for many years.
It was a few years after he got clean, but he went for vacation on a break between tours a couple times in the late 90s, and met the folks you mention.
Me Too, Tom..I'm weeping thinking of My long night's all alone as a young wife and Mom of 4 now Adult children, and how they now don't communicate with Me, since the divorce from their father..."Most November's I break down and cry..cause I can't remember if We said Goodbye." :'(
Steve Earle has been my hero and inspiration for many years. As a recovering addict myself, I've always found great happiness in his gits, and grateful to God he lived to continue to share them.
We got Steve headlining Saturday night at hardly strictly bluegrass festival in Golden gate Park, and he was perfect. What a pro. He evokes so many emotions and can lay his heart bare in front of thousands. He's brave, honest, harsh at times, and he knows how life can deal some harsh blows. He's a good human being
I saw Emmy Lou in concert in 1974. I have loved her ever since. She was super hot in her 20s. But aside from closing my eyes and listening to her incredible voice, I admire her modesty, her selfishness, her compassion, and how she has grown older so graciously.
one of the songs that brings my to tears...what blessing this earth has had....with the likes of steve earle (who like most of us learned the hard way) and Miss Emmy lou harris...I will always be hopelessly in love with her counrty girl beauty and her spirit catcher of a voice...
The emotion in this song is just gut wrenching. Steve is brilliant and Emmy lifts the song to celestial levels with her harmony. Together they are just heart-breaking. The harmonica and Violin add such a haunting feel. A fantastic arrangement. Such a pleasure to have such simple yet, fantastic music.
Damn 😂 this is a very beautiful voices listen to them. Two Pro's loving there Trade anit this so beautiful ❤ it takes me away sweet as honey. Damn aI can't remember if we said goodbye beautiful
That's Nollaig Casey on violin and if you look hard enough you'll spot Arty McGlynn on acoustic guitar - as usual brilliantly discrete in the background. Music at its brilliant best.
...a wonderful song...!!!! this song played (Emmylou Harris sings that song solo) on my mother's funeral, she died last year at the beginning of March. the tears also now run me across the face. REST IN PEACE MAMA...i love you.

I just had to learn this song, seeing this perfect video. I guess I'm a biased observer, but is it just me, or do women get more beautiful as they age? Richer, deeper, stronger - yet more delicate makes you want to treasure them extra special... Sharon Shannon's quiet, composed face in this video... and Emmy Lou

I have to confess the 'Old Alligators' have got loose in my eyes... This year's Mother's Day was the second one since she joined my Dad. Your my girl! Remember that will forever be true. So very wise... Talk about how I have to analyze or profile everybody I meet! She sit visiting on the edge...people will show you unconsciously the Real Deal...of what they're up to!
For those who can say they feel an emotion, listening to a work of Art. "BRAVO ". I for one lived this saga during my early marriage to a loving and caring women. Taken hostage by addiction. Dead on. Warm breeze. Yes, freedom
Donal Lunny?(Bouzouki) You show up in the strangest of places. Beautiful song. I'm a huge fan of Steve Earle and after all these years I'm still madly in love with Emmylou Harris.
+Owl Morris yep I hear you Bro and it's been 25 yrs since I had me some whiskey and tequilas I was in Mexico once from San Diego Still don't know how I got home.... Greetings from IRELAND 😉 salamat for this
@@SteveEarle-dp8vthello 👋 from Glasgow iam new to your music which I think is brilliant have been a country fan since the 60s but missed you along the way now making up for lost time listening every day now please keep well lv Christine xx
The first time I heard this song was on the TV show Friday Night Lights. The scene was when there was two brother and one of the brothers was going to jail for the other one because I believe the guilty one's wife was pregnant. This song played as they said Goodbye. It blew me away. This version to me is the best. The looks on the faces of the group says it all.
The month my ex wife left me without saying goodbye my friend asked me to see this guy sing.... I didn't know who he was at the time but thought it be good to get out. He played in front of maybe 200 people and played this song. It forever became one of my favorites and I actually have it bookmarked as a fav. Its been 6 years now and I've never told this to anyone before writing this piece....
Discovered this late last night and had to pass it on! It is indeed a gem and Thank you for posting! Two favorites for many years-this is one of the most beautiful duets ever.
Lots of clips of them doing this song on you tube. This one is for me the best quality sound and picture and the harmonising between Earle and Emily is perfect. Also the violins add to the lyricism.
Awesome video, I have never seen this before. The instruments in the background make the song sound even better. Is there more to this concert or did they only perform one song?
Your support fuels my creative passion I'm humbled by your appreciation and love Your presence here adds a special touch to my day Your warm welcome has made this platform even better
