Ever since I heard the Copperhead Road album back in the late 80's, I have been a fan of Steve Earle. Some of the Stories told through his music in is subsequent albums is second to none in my eyes. Always like the song, "The Devils Right Hand" and respect his view on the perception of the no longer being a pro gun related song.
I love this song. Its author is entitled to his views......and whilst I am ambivalent on the whole gun control thing the wisdom of this song rings true. I grew up in a place where guns and knives were carried regularly......and its very easy to fuck up badly when a weapon is readily available.
Living in a California border town they look at you mad if you ain't Brown when you live in a California border town. everyone's racist and everything's free for you not me when you live in California border town. you get the California Blues while illegal immigrants get them fancy new shoes thanks to you paying your dues in a California border town. you cannot get an ID because you ain't got the proper paperwork but illegal immigrant get license how does that work it must be a California border town.
@therandom3591 Steve is MY HERO. You're starting to piss me off ! And it's mansion twat face . Get a brain that works next time you're in line for one.
@therandom3591 And you are a twat, a boil infested rash on the ass of humanity ! Get the hell out of here and stop pissing me off. You're just trying to get a reaction from SE fans like me. Well - congratulations - you got me pissed off. F U and everybody that thinks or looks like you ! And the horse you rode in on !
Doug - I've been reading some of your posts this a.m. YOU, sir are what's still GOOD and decent in this country. God bless you and yours. And that's coming from a man who only asks God for the care and needs of others. I have always tried to subscribe to the old saying " God takes care of those who take care of themselves ". If I ever make it out to Ca I would treasure the opportunity to meet you and shake your hand. Take care
Kudos to you and I love you man for saying that - one time at his I.C concert I DID yell out WE ALREADY LOVE YOU and that was for the Mastersons I ADORE and CHERISH the talents of Steve and can see how someone could get into a cult , I would do anything to be able to be his bassist should Kelly ever have to leave
Sorry Steve & Dukes. I meant to say - Should Kelley ever need a little break I would consider it an HONOR to cover for him. I know Mr. Earle knows a million good bass players but would never find one more loyal and dedicated to the cause than me. Plus I pride myself in being a hard working as well as experienced musician having played with the phenomenal Craig Erickson in No Surf years ago. Also played with Bill Nix, Doug Bright, Bruce Stanley, ( RIP brother ) Paul Swineheart, Jerry, Zach and Cory Scott with the Merles and Nix-Bright band from the Cedar Rapids area. Also did a gig with Dick Prall, Brook Hoover and Bill Neff. ( not exactly slackers in their own right ) One of my first gigs was with Steve Lawrence / Hostage in Anamosa. ( last I knew Doug was playing with Hostage ) Headed to Duluth in '82 to play with SASS - a band out of the Duluth / Superior area booked by GMA out of the Twin Cities. Wasn't afraid to take a chance then and not afraid to now. Steve, Eleanor and Chris - GIVE ME A CALL !!! I can play a little upright bass but have never owned one. Also, I could get my Tuba chops back for a little "Band" tribute. I still watch "The Last Waltz" every once in a while when I have the time. Also played contra bass bugle with the Emerald Knights Drum & Bugle corps in '76 and '77. Oh well - this might all be for naught but I had to try. God bless you all - Ya' all have brought me more happiness than you realize but a "dream come true" would be a call from any of you. 319-899-8137 See you at the Englert !! I only wish & pray for the best for ALL of you - my OLD FRIENDS - you ALL shine like diamonds in my humble and common life.
I don't think he has a solid stance on gun control except that gun culture in the U.S. is ridiculous (which it is), and that it's not a good idea for him to have a gun in his possession considering he and his now-deceased son were both drug addicts.
Yes, America gained its independence through mean tweets and loud insults. Gun culture isn't "out of control" unless you're the one that wants to control it. The word for people like you is "tyrant." Regarding Steve Earle, as a drug user and felon he's not legally able to own a gun, period, so his opinion on gun control in America is about as useless as a European's.
I fully agree with Steve’s logic and commend him on changing his belief system in favour of the safety of his son, rather than having a blinding allegiance to a metal tube that holds a trigger. Kudos, Mr. Earle.
Sorry to hear about your incident. I wasn't shot but had my face ripped open in a nasty sledding accident at the age of 6. They patched me up to the tune of about 170 stitches ( inside and out ). But only after being driven to the local doctor's office and then raced to the hospital by my dad and his hired man. I think I might have taken 10 years off my dad's lifeline that cold-ass overcast winter day. I never passed out 'till they put the IV in my arm. The pain was inexplicable and I looked like a monster after I got home. (my family was told to keep mirrors away from me but eventually I saw one.) " I look like a monster - how can you all stand to look at me " were my exact words. I'm sixty now & can still remember it like it was yesterday. Bruce, I know it's been a couple years since you posted but have you felt with your head injury that you can 'kinda tell what people are thinking ? Not saying I can read minds but maybe it's just my experienced view of human nature and mortal tactics. Anyway, again sorry to read about your deal. If you should see this please reach out and reply or email me at darwin.hartl@gmail.com. Nobody should have to go through what you did at that age. May God bless you and protect you all the rest of your days ( and after-life ). I'm guessing he or she has. Thanks for your post, even tho' I read it 2 years too late. I thought I had it rough but doesn't really compare to you. Take care buddy !
definitely him alright, seen him loads of times since first time i saw him in Dublin in 1990 with the dukes, his sister was also playing with the band at that time, great gig.
@@dudydude8912 Laugh out loud all you want but DON'T tell me to chill or I might tell you what to do or better yet - where to go. Didn't your brother John used to play bass with the Who?
@@dudydude8912 Yeah I know. Just joking. Sorry but I don't live on my laptop so it took me awhile to respond. I knew a Gay Stuerwald in college. Seems like we both had uncommon names at the time. I believe you're only the second Gay I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Have a nice life !
I think it's one of the best gun-centric songs ever written, honestly. I definitely get where Steve's coming from with the experience of balancing out his life after beginning his recovery from heroin addiction and alcoholism combined with suddenly having the obligation of a child added onto him and how it changed his perspective on guns in his own personal life, but ultimately what anyone should take from this is that the gun is a tool that demands respect and not trivialization -- and in the wrong hands, such as the ones of the uncaring narrator, they can be your worst enemy. So as a lifelong gun-toting socialist much like Steve, I quite enjoy the dual meanings this song can carry.
This is the beauty, the pure beauty of songs that stand the test of time... they mean what the author meant them to be... but they take on so much more over time! Today... The Devil's Right Hand could refer to alcohol and alcoholism, or war (even gun control, regardless if that was not it's intention originally)... it could mean the creation of disease and Covid! This song and it's lyrics reflect the badness in life... if we let it... But what this song truly does, is helps us to open our minds to change and make... THAT... difference! Steve.. hope you are well, that your family and fellow country people are well also! And to everyone else... stay safe... stay well... and if you believe in something different... respect the beliefs of others! Life is AWESOME... let's all make it better!
A pistol is not the devil's right hand and it not saying it's evil the truth is when the pistol is in a devil's right hand is when it/they do evil! If you like guns or not train your kids and equip th with the knowledge of guns and how to properly handle, clean and store guns. By teaching and showing them how dangerous and deadly a gun can be in the hands of a fool or another kid who has let curiosity take control of their actions. So many accidents could be avoided with simply educating kids and all loved ones about guns, what they are capable of and why they must be respected by everyone but most importantly that they are not a toy!
Hey Joker - you might want to read your reply to yourself before hitting the blue reply button. If it doesn't make sense or sound right then edit it, re-proofread it and THEN post it. Your connecting everything together is difficult to decipher. You make some good points - just a little hard to interpret. STAY COOL JOKER !!
Steve may have written the song but Waylon Jennings sings it the best. Heard this song my 1st time in the movie betrayed with Waylon singing it. Cool tune still on my playlist in 2019.
Waylon can't hold a candle to Steve when it comes to writing songs. This from an old Waylon & Willie fan. No disrespect to Waylon intended but I've played dozens of both their songs ( as covers of course ) over the years and I love 'em both. But in different ways . Blue eyes by Willie was one of my Mom's favorite tunes if not her favorite. But she never got to hear much Steve because I discovered him way too late. I still tear up to this day while singing it in the shower. "some day when we meet up yonder" I might not make it to the same place as her that's why it has that effect on me. But i requested it for my daughter's wedding dance later this year & I'm just hoping I can keep it together. Anyone out there have any suggestions I would love to hear from you
Sorry about the whiskey comment. Just hope Trev hasn't been into the DRH too many nights lately. Too much whiskey affects the digestive tract and more importantly - the gut from what I remember. And the gut is a direct link to the precursors for cancer. (according to a GOOD old friend of mine fighting pancreatic cancer ) Stay healthy Trev ! The Irish are truly a spirited, colorful and thoroughly entertaining bunch ! And I LOVE their music! I wouldn't want to have to start missing my Celtic friends .

I'm PRETTY sure it's Townes Van Zandt. Wrote "Pancho and Lefty" Performed on Austin City Limits in 1976, same year that Guy Clark was on. Season 2 - although web says he was on ACL in '77, '82, '83, '90, '98, 2000 & 2008. Was inducted into ACL Hall of Fame in 2015. At the end of Steve Earle's 10/19/19 performance ( A Tribute to Guy Clark ) they show a clip of Guy & his band dated 1976 , Season 2. The two (Townes & Guy ) were best friends 'till New Years Day 1997 when Townes died of a heart attack at the age of 52. ( while recuperating from hip surgery )
+Berty Bert BTW, I recorded this song on my 1st CD, "13 Shades of Blues" (out of production) but clips can still be heard here and there... Amazon??? Pish back atcha, Berty Bert... Bob;~)
I like 'em both but really there's NO comparison i always thought it was Seager - my mistake One was top 40 radio music BUT Steve's songs will last the test of time Hell - they already have
It is definitely Morello. They have done several shows and political events together, including a the "Tell Us the Truth" tour, though this is a BBC songwriter special broadcast. The politics connect them. There are a few videos of them doing "This Land is Your Land " together, since they often do it when on the same bill.
@Alpha Werks Not really. That was more because of his drug use and unwillingness to stick to one genre. His career was not really destroyed, in any case, though he could have made more if he did the kind of music the Nashville label wanted.
@Alpha Werks Also, there have been many crashes involving moonshine over the years, but he was not referencing any one story. It was inspired by a news story about an elderly woman from a moonshining family arrested for growing pot.
@Alpha Werks You seem to be someone who is not willing to learn anything. You are not the only one who is from the area and you have the story wrong. He was blackballed before he became explicitly political when he switched from MCA Nashville to MCA LA, which was his choice and all about the music. His attitude to label execs and drug use were also part of the issue. By the time he connected with Morello, he was far from mainstream Nashville, but doing very well in the Americana world. His politics have not hurt him there.
I'm glad to see that Steve is wearing a button on his guitar strap in support of us union workers in Wisconsin that had our union busted by the Governer.
Steve has ALWAYS supported the common man. He's just like us, man. Talk to him someday, if you haven't thus far. He's a GOOD man. Just had a tough row to hoe at times. Just like me. ( and perhaps you as well )
In March 1982, 33 years ago and counting, the small town of Kennesaw Georgia unanimously passed an ordinance requiring each head of household to own and maintain a gun. Since then, despite dire predictions of “Wild West” showdowns and increased violence and accidents, not a single resident has been involved in a fatal shooting - as a victim, attacker or defender.
John Last you cant defend your countries gun laws in anyway shape or form.. sometimes statistics lie sometimes they dont. in your case definatly not. your gun laws are shit.
frillylizzard I could certainly defend my countries gun laws but it would be a waste of time presenting facts to a close minded individual such as you. Evidently gun ownership is not one of the freedoms you enjoy in whatever country you live and I wonder how many other freedoms you have given up for no other reason than someone imposed their ideals on you.
frillylizzard well he can, Americas crime is at its lowest, yet they have more guns than ever. And considering over 90% of their crime comes from 5 major cities.
Lol notice that most of the pro gun comments are from Americans...who gives a fuck, people should just get on with their lives, if you don't like what Steve is saying get out there and do something about it. At least he has had the heart to get on the road and sing about his life and beliefs. Oh but of course you do need talent to be able to do that.
Richie P. Reader yeah people should get on with their lives, so why are you not ? Instead your make a deal out of comments. And anyway if Americas crime rate is dropping yet there gun ownership is increasing, that's maybe your answer, and the other countries with rights. Why not look at actual facts and stats.
Not completely sure about this but I don't believe God would NEED a gun, what with all that wrath and all. Ben - I think your caps lock is broken. FIX IT BUDDY !!
Not necessarily gun control as in guns need to go away, but that carrying a gun has consequences, and whether they are good or bad it up to you. So if you don't want trouble don't carry a gun.
It’s about your god given rights not about loving a thing. Most countries can’t even watch RU-vid or use the internet because they have no rights we have rights because are founding fathers said a nuff and made shore we would-always be free and the constitution of the United States of America gives every American these rights and protection. Iam seeing a lot of people these days that think it’s ok to just give up rights like it’s nothing because they are ignorant about how many people have die fighting for are country and the rights we all have may be because now I’m guessing it’s hard for people that never put on a uniform and put there right hand up and swore oth to defend this country from all enemies foreign and domestic to do that is no small thing I can tell you first hand . what that means is ready to die and fight against anyone how wants to strip are country and Americans of there rights. I have always liked STEVE earl I grow up I Him me and my whole family still like he’s so far left he does a you turn now. And he’s from Texas omg and he has the right to say what he feels about guns or anything that’s his constitutional right to do so that’s what makes the United States of America the greatest country in the world but come on any one how is keeping a gun under there mattress,he should not have a gun if he doesn’t have it locked up with a kid in his house! Guns should be locked unless it’s on your person and in your control That’s control The comment was “love guns more then lives of other people” It’s not about lives most of know this it’s control of the people In 2018 40.000 people died in car accidents And in the same year 4.5 million people were seriously injured in car accidents as well. In the same year 4.761 people died from tractor trailer truck accidents. And I can go on with motorcycle accidents, drunk driving accidents But people don’t blow there tops over car accidents and deaths and the numbers are crazy. People are passionate over their rights I’m not mad at anyone how disagrees that’s why this country is the best . we can talk like this And discuss calmly and rationally with each other are opinions I’m shore a lot of people will hate this God bless
@@roninoneil546 OMG Ronin. It's enough, sure, their - not there, and our - not are. Doesn't say too much for the Texas public school system - does it ?
I am 52 years old and live in England. I have never owned a gun. I have never needed a gun because I have never been threatened with a gun. I have never been threatened with a gun because no one else has a gun. Get it?
Not an easy message to get over to gun nutters that are so scared of their own shadows. They're happy enough to have the odd massacre every second week or so. Keeps the population down and enriches the armaments business I guess.
Ali...I grew up with a gun in the house...we also left the doors unlocked...dont flap your gums about something you no nothing about...its not about being scared...its about being able to take care of your own IF or when the shit gets real...but go on and try talking some psych job or pill head outta not hurting your kids to get what they want...but heaven help you and your family man if you do...worked in a trauma center I see the difference...which is who shows up for fixing
Keith...The independant reported a 20 percent spike in GUN and knife crime last summer...so you dont have a gun...and thankful you have never been on the wrong end of one...but dont cowar in naivety to think the bad guys dont have them...that statement is a falsity
Well if they had of been carrying guns u might not of been here but u are .The fact is if you carry a fire arm your more likely to kill in the spare of the moment once you have done it there's no going back but the real question is could you live with yourself ..?
Depends entirely on the person. If anything, I avoid emotional people when I carry my weapon. If people have no self control, then they should learn to have some self control rather than try to limit other people's personal choices.
I've always loved Steve's song writing and always will. Having said that, you should have locked the gun up. Still a great song even if you're using it to preach.
Yeah, it's like the gun was under the bed, duh! But instead of saying "Maybe I should keep it locked up" but no, he took a strong turn to the now ever so popular, "Nothing is ever my fault! And blames the gun......
Steve don't preach. He tells it like it is. Don't like it ? Don't listen. If it was an unloaded gun then isn't that as good as having it locked up ? Yeah - his son could've had his own ammo but I find that a bit unlikely. If Steve had the ammo secured than I don't see a problem. I could've had my revolver stolen when I carried but they never would have found my hollow-points because only I knew where they were. Thanks for your love of his talents though.
Wait. Did he act in “The Wire”? I could be wrong but I swear this guy played the friend of Bubbles. This guy looks nothing like he did in the 80s and early 90s, you wouldn’t know this was the same guy at all.
Yeah, he was in The Wire. He played Waylon, who became Bubbles' Narcotics Anonymous sponsor. They also used I Feel Alright as the ending song for the second season.

My grandfather was a WW2 hero. He always said "Give up every right you have, but never give up your gun. If you have your gun you automatically still have every right that was attempted to be taken away" Grandpa had several pistols,a shotgun and a rifle. Grandma had a pistol she carried. You didn't know that she had it. Great grandma who lived with us had a small Derringer she kept beside her in her rocking chair. You might ask if they were scared of anything? No. Nothing scared them. If trouble started, they could finish it, no problem. Yes I was a child raised in their house. I knew what a gun was and to leave it alone. My family was never afraid of me touching one. I was taught better.
If a gun is used for evil, then yes it is wrong. However if a gun is used responsibly for the purpose of protecting your life or the life of another, then it is a very good thing to have in your possession. It is better to have a gun and not need to use it, than to need a gun and not have one. The minutemen at lexington common/green would agree. ... On another note I believe what Steve was trying to say is that because he was struggling with staying soberminded and trying to raise a son who was also getting into trouble and not making the right choices , that it was better for his personal situation not to have guns around where they could be used for "evill " ie. " The Devils right Hand " Any neutral object can be used for good or evil depending on the person using that object.
I realize this is quite cliche' but the Truth is gun control laws only affect those that are already responsible citizens, they make the most vulnerable even more defenseless, the real evil that lurks doesn't give a squat about laws, nor worry about doing time, that is if they're caught, which they'll do almost anything not to be.
Steve's poor parenting skills no reason for me to not own gun or guns. i am just a working class guy trying to get in this world. I can not afford the cost of body guards or around the clock security like steve can and all of those big shot liberal dems who want to make me a victim. So Titus I think Your spot on and steve is fucking wrong.
My husband always said When guns are outlawed Only outlaws will have guns. Criminals don't care about picking up one more charge while breaking the law.
highnrising no, not all. But, enough of them. Heard six shots go off at Jones & O’Farrell in SF. Walked over to the 26yo male laying in the street - he was dead. Two perps had a gun. The deceased did not.
