/ thecriminalhistorian Saints, Sinners and corruption at the highest levels of government. Tonight we will examine a man who directly competed with our own program for slots in evening Primetime and with the likes of dirty cops and paid off judges for the title of most corrupt man in government. We will follow the actions of a man many of you already know, a D List Celebrity who masqueraded as an honest and reliable man of the people. We will witness criminal coercion, tax-payer funded robberies and “enhanced interrogation” as we follow the life of a G Man who would do anything for his country, and himself. A man so blinded by his delusional patriotic fervor that he may have actually believed his actions were in service to America; Steve Haines.

I find it weird how Steve isn't the main antagonist of GTA V. After all, he endangered the protagonists' lives 6 times during the story.

@@Michael_De_Santa-Unofficial you make a good point about the number of times Haines endangered the protagonists lives, but studying his "friendship" with DW will reveal he was essentially in Weston's pocket and thus you'd imagine Weston could manipulate Haines, the FIB and thus probably anyone in SA or BC, so in terms of outright power used maliciously - Weston is number one

What makes GTA V’s antagonists so dangerous is not their appearance or the way they speak like the previous games, but their corruption and cutthroat nature that make them threatening. Just like Frank Tenpenny Steve Haines uses his status as a government official as a tool for his misdeeds, except unlike Tenpenny Steve genuinely believes that he is doing the right thing for America. Which says a lot about the corruption of the FIB.

Sure, a news report says that Tahir is a man with interests in the green energy sector but then again, it says that Mikhail Faustin is a "colourful man" and "community benefactor" as well as other misreports. It's the news. Tahir is seen doing coke at the party and Ferdinand says he would have said everything. So, he knew about Tahir. Why was he so quiet about him?

The GTA 5 antagonists aren't scary like a Tenpenny, but just so God damn annoying. Although as a federal agent, Haines for sure can ruin you life beyond doing anything physical to you.

I really think Steve was so full of himself because he's a federal agent. He was very corrupted. He pick the 3 wrong guys to work for him. Seeing him get killed by Trevor on live TV was a great way to end Steve's TV show with a 'bang!' He kept a close eye on Michael that he didn't think about Franklin and Trevor would be a problem for him and this lead to his death.

What? He wanted both Michael and Trevor to get clipped. Dave convinced him to keep Michael around, but Trevor was still on the shit list. I think you meant that Steve's mistake was underestimating Franklin. One of Franklin's flaws is just doing shit without thinking without future consequences for himself, and he just waits for someone to tell him to do something. This was something pointed out by Michael in his very first meeting. Steve and Dave also picked up on this major flaw of Franklin's and tried to use it against him. But option C (which is canon) prove them both wrong.

Steve Haines is my favorite "villain" (I don't feel right calling Steve a villain, since GTA has no heroes) in the entire GTA franchise. But my favorite antagonist in the entire Rockstar games universe is, certainly, Gary Smith.

2 things. I find it funny how in both gta v and San Andreas the main antagonists are a trio of corrupt law enforcement officers. And the one who rats them out is the newest member who is Hispanic. Agent Sanchez and officer Hernandez. 2nd I think Sanchez was supposed to tell Michael, Trevor, and Franklin about needing 6 men for the bio lab raid when he meets them at the train after the bank heist. All he said tho was "get your crew together." I dunno if he didn't tell them they needed 6 members on purpose or not. Maybe he was hoping the heist wouldn't go through if they didn't have enough members.

Steve is definitely the best antagonist in GTA 5 not too far off from Devin and Molly and way better then Wei Cheng and Stretch who are the worst antagonists in the whole GTA Franchise.

@The Senate I wouldn't classify Cheng as an Antagonist either if you didn't have to kill him in the final mission which you only do if they are important to the story and are a major enemy to the Protagonist. Same thing as Stretch.

He should have been the Main Villain of the game. Steve could have been just as good of a villain as Tenpenny was. He was the only one that had actually leverage on our characters specifically Michael. Literally held his life in the palm of his hands lol then they just kinda forget about him and kill him easily. Haines may not be intimidating but ultimately he’s a compelling antagonist. I think Haines was probably at some point a different type of guy, and his supposed exposure to corruption changed him. In some ways I actually believe Steve was a patriot. He legitimately risked his life during the Humane Labs raid, and could have been killed by the IAA. It’s funny how his opportunistic nature comes into play when he wanted to take down Michael and Trevor. Also Haines and Trevor are kind of similar - they are both charismatic, yet psychotic. They are both capable of doing anything to further themselves. They are both hotheaded. And they both trust very few people after being betrayed by their partners. Haines trusted Dave and Trevor trusted Franklin and Lamar exclusively after Michael’s betrayal.

They don't need to be intimidating, and I don't really find Dimitri that intimidating. Tenpenny maybe. But the antagonist of V we're suppose to be egotistical assholes who were assholes because they believe they were untouchable and that is why they were so corrupt and treated everyone as a pawn.

GTA V was much more comedic, sorta returning to the light-heartedness that San Andreas had vs GTA 4. Look at Trevor alone; he's psychotic, but absolutely hilarious at the same time. Steve was just a clown trying to look good in the FIB and Devin was a lame that couldn't fight his own battles.

in my opinion, the antagonists in gta 5 seem more realistic, especially when it comes to steven haines and devin weston, they're more of white collar crime scum. also, they did justice to it because they all seem human and not like super villians, like stretch, we didn't even know stretch was gonna be one of the bigger antagonists, the idea of "we're all human beings and we all have fears"😬well, most human beings have fears

Lamar won't be for a long time. GTA V characters are really annoying to do because so many of them need footage from GTA Online. Recording Footage for GTA online is a nightmare.

The one problem I've had with gta v is with how many antags there was. I think it would've help if there was just 1 maybe 2 from the entire game that either played a major role in the background or something. They all just seemed kinda meh. Compared to all the other bad guys we've gotten.

But I think it helps the narriative. Remember, in V, no one is the "antagonist". You could say the antagonist is human nature. A central theme of the game is hypocracy. The main trio are just as bad as these antagonists.

Just a quick correction on a mistake @ 4:26, you mention that Steve is in his early 30's, but @ 3:18 you mention that he was born in 1975, so he should have been 29, which is late 20's. (It may be a bit fussy, but I thought I should just point that out). Great video nonetheless. Keep them coming 😄👍🏽 Also, it is a bit of a surprise that Steve lives with his mother, which I wouldn't imagine being the case for a guy like him. He just looks like he has a bit too much of an ego to be living with his parents.

Man I forgot GTA 5 had any specific antagonists. I remember the trio pissing pretty much everybody off, but no villain really sticks out to me about that game at all. Honestly I hate to say it but beyond the three protagonists the game itself is super forgettable to me. I'm sure with it's 3rd release now most other people are wishing they could forget it a bit more lol

26:47, that is the biggest third lie for a cover up, that is no cheap perfume, everyone will say that it is a cheap perfume and the fact that people will say that the Humane Labs was a soap research center and a place where animal rights activists raided the facility back then was a pretty good cover up. In the Humane Labs heist in Online, we all know that the facility is no soap maker. And so, Steve really did something for a change.

Dave yes. Though Im not sure when. At the moment I have the show planned up to Season 4 but dont plan to cover any GTA V side characters yet because so many of them need Online footage. Dave does not though so he would probably be sooner. May even slot him into Season 3.
