Not to get all analytical but I think it’d be important to remember that a lot of people Steve’s age don’t know him like we, the audience, know him. We see the character development he underwent between season 1 and now. We see how he can be a bumbling idiot sometimes but also an incredibly caring friend and boyfriend. The people in Hawkins don’t. We see time and again with characters like Robin and Eddie how shocked and surprised people are when they meet Steve and realize that he’s actually a good guy. And that’s because most people Steve’s age only know him as King Steve; the popular asshole who won prom king. For most people Steve’s age, they just know him as the asshole who peaked in high school who now works a “dead end” job and doesn’t have half as much charm he used to (or at the very least, he doesn’t have the same charm he used to). I’m sure those of us who are/have been in high school can recall a guy like King Steve. And if we’re being honest, I don’t think many of us would give that guy a chance if we met him again. So it’s honestly kinda understandable (imo at least) that not many people wanna give him a shot.

1:48 I love this scene so much because it’s one of the few times we actually see Steve get super excited and not care if he looks like a total dork because of it. I have my own headcanon that I came up with way back when that the reason he’s so keen to hang around Dustin and the other kids is because he never really got to be a kid himself. I’m guessing he was taught from an early age that popularity was the highest goal someone could strive for. He probably spent so much of his youth trying to act all cool for other people that he never really got to do the things he wanted and now that he has a ton of kids to hang around who he knows won’t judge him for acting like himself, he’s much more comfortable with being himself. Like you’ll notice there’s more scenes of him being loud and outspoken as each season progresses, whereas in season one he spends most of his time trying to be chill to impress Nancy and everyone else.
Not enough people realize that Nancy turned Steve into a better person. If you pay attention, he ran with an asshole friend group and used to be a massive douche. But falling in love with Nancy turned him into a caring person
Yeah people like to shit on Nancy but they need to realize she was going through a lot in the first 2 seasons and also is the one who made Steve realize how much of a jerk he used to be.
Maybe it's because I already knew he became a fan favorite (and now mine), but I saw several signs in Season 1 that he legitimately tried to be better around Nancy, especially when the two were alone. He wasn't exactly a good boyfriend, and he never understood what Nancy really needed from him (a fault he carried into Season 2), but you could tell he cared and wanted to be with her for her, and not just for a one-night stand.
@@Johnnymack666 he only cared about himself when barb went missing and was just trying to save himself, he also contributed with the other 2 asshole friends into writing “Nancy the Slut” on the movie theatre sign, but he’s since become a much better person and realized his mistakes

I hate how people say Steve was a jerk in Season one. Sure, his friends totally were, but every action he takes in that season is mostly well justified for his situation. Him breaking Johnathan's camera is mean, but also the guy was hiding in his back yard taking pictures of Nancy getting naked. Johnathan is lucky he didn't call the police or something. And then when he thinks Nancy is cheating on him, it's because he saw them lying in bed together. He was at worst ignorant, and most of the really bad things his friends did he actively tried to fix. He bought Johnathan a new camera and cleaned up the graffiti that his friends painted on the theater. He's also the one who calls his friends out. Not anyone else. He does that himself. I swear people just think "popular kid = bad" and only started liking him once he wasn't popular anymore in season 2.
That's always how it was when I was in middle school and high school. Almost everyone called everyone by their last name. Aside from like best friends, but even then, there were times when we did it with best friends too.
@@MarkHogan994 everyone at my high school used it as a way to talk down to people. If they see you as beneath them they'll only use your last name. All the arrogant sporty types did it to me specifically, it sucks. My name is (first name) not (last name).
