He was probably already seriously ill at this point. Hence the motor failures. Now he is apparently dying. Thanks for the great music Steve Harwell! ❤️🙏
Alcohol destroys both the body and the mind, it can affect anybody regardless of your background or circumstances. I believe his life was tragic due to his enduring battle with alcoholism throughout his adult years. Also, in 2001, he endured the heartbreaking loss of his only child, who tragically passed away from leukemia at just six months old. It's possible that this traumatic event exacerbated his struggle with the disease. RIP
This video will turn from something we laughed at, to something we feel sorrow for. Addiction is terrible and takes away many great things we once loved.
I hope you don’t take this video down. I think it’s important to show that someone who is plastered and acting silly, it’s not all fun and games and “rockstar life”. It’s sad, and this is a good example of that dichotomy
My husband died 19 months ago of acute alcohol abuse. Esophageal varices caused internal bleeding. It was a graphic death that will forever haunt me. He was only 68 years, but started drinking at 13 to calm his anxiety.
I am dealing with this I'm 31 and drink to deal with crippling anxiety sometimes. I don't drink like I used to in my 20s but it's tempting with how anxious I am all the time. I'm on meds but they don't work as well as drinking in the moment does for me. it sucks. very sorry to hear about your husband :(
@@NotTheVibenothing worse for anxiety than drinking. Trust me I drank vodka everyday for 5 years and quit cold turkey when my friend died in-front of me. Changed my entire paradigm, I wouldn’t drink alcohol o save my life now. I was also 31 when I quit, don’t wait any longer to change your life.
my dad also succumbed to the same thing basically. just a couple of months ago. combination of varices, liver cancer, liver failure and he went into hepatic encep on his last moments. he was 62. man it fucking sucks. @@NotTheVibe stop while your liver is still okay. if not for yourself. you would never, ever want your loved ones to see you the way i saw my father's last moments. just smoke some good weed for your anxiety if you can get it.
@@NotTheVibesame. I can relate and hope you find a healthier way to find peace. That’s what I’m trying to do. Little 5 or 10 milli edibles have been the best so far.
@@gimmeallthebingbong weed makes my anxiety worse… I’m currently on benzos which isn’t ideal but it’s the only that helps with the constant anxiety so i can even leave my home to do basic things
So tragic, RIP Steve. The poor guy crawled into a bottle in 2001 after his 6 month old child died of acute leukemia, and sadly, he never crawled back out. It's a genuinely tragic story--at the absolute height of their success, when he and the band are a household name and poised for even more success--and then he gets chopped down at the knees by a horrific childhood illness which takes his young son. I'm not surprised that the band patterned out from there and Steve crumbled--who wouldn't? It's just so sad he never got himself back together, he died in 2001 but just kept himself stringing on like a zombie on life support until he finally went. I don't believe in God, but if there is anything after Death then I truly hope Steve is at peace, and is finally with his 6 month old son again like he wanted so badly. My heart breaks for this entire situation and his family, so tragic.
It is appointed for man to die once and after that comes judgment, unless he/she repents !! Only a fool says that there is no God. Evidence is everywhere. The mirror can tell you!
@@GustavoLopez-mo5mqamen, and I'll add, "Jesus said, 'I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except by Me.'" ~John 14:6 I pray Steve Harwell repented and turned to follow Christ before it was too late. Addiction is very sad, and I praise God Christ restored me from many years of alcohol abuse. I wish everyone would reach out to Him for salvation, transformation, and life eternal.
@GustavoLopez-mo5mq yep psalm 14:1 "The fool says no God exists" Rip to Steve but excuses never helped anyone. Yes it hurts to lose a child but people also make excuses when they want to do something and have an addiction. I'm glad I believe in God and I've felt him in my life. How empty and dark it must be for those who choose to reject Him
I feel bad for Steve. Dude clearly still struggling with addiction/alcoholism. It just sucks, usually at that age bands reach the enlightened phase of their careers where they take nothing for granted and attempt to enjoy every moment, but Steve seems to have some big demons that need tackling
Honestly, I kinda get it. I mean, how would you feel if your life's work resulted in one song being remembered mostly as a meme. Yeah they had a few other albums, but everyone associates them with that one song. It's like a monkey's paw scenario, they got the hit, but at what cost?
Not to mention the dude lost his son from Leukemia in 2001, seems like this traumatized Steve so much that it drove him into alcoholism and self destruction. Just hope he’s doing better now honestly and is getting the help he needs
Bands don't reach any enlightened phase. They just stagnate in whatever drama they're in amd attempt revivals. Though I have to say, Steve has been through alot.
@@stevencooper564 It's unfortunate to have people only know your music from only one song, or one era of your career. It's kinda like how the Beach Boys are only known for surf rock music despite making the most orchestral pop music and being a bluesy rocking band after Pet Sounds.
@@neonfroot Thanks for the assertion that I'm wrong, but I disagree, I've seen several bands that hit what I flippantly called the enlightenment phase, and all I mean by that is their egos are a little more shelved, they've seen the top and then seen their fame vanish a bit; they're no longer on the radio, they just have past success and stardom to carry them, so they appreciate things much more. It is just a fact that several bands reach this point when they get much older. We can argue about the term I used, it was just an off the cuff thing, but I explained what I meant so it's the concept that matters, and I'm correct about the concept.
This is beyond sad.. I'm pretty sure he lost his child back in the early 00's.. I'm sure that might be the reason for some of this, might have made his addiction spiral out of control. Get well Steve, goddamn--
@@spitornottospit9429 "Harwell had a son named Presley who died in July 2001 from acute lymphocytic leukemia at the age of 6 months. Subsequently, Harwell created a medical research fund in Presley's name" From Wikipedia Also few articles about it on google.
It's sad ,not funny at all. People can't wait to see a person go through shit , like it's entertaining to them,,, but in all honesty it's just ashame. I hope he gets help
Brain damage cause by lack of B1. He has had the diagnoses for the past 8 years....but it has become so acute, he just quit the band because of his inability to perform on stage.
@@SquishyAcePilot Thiamin a.k.a. vitamin B1 = enables the body to use carbohydrates as energy. It is essential for glucose metabolism, and it plays a key role in nerve, muscle, and heart function. Vitamin B1 is a water-soluble vitamin, as are all vitamins of the B complex.
@JJSeattle yes. It is found in a lot of cereals. I guess breakfast IS the most important meal of the day lol. But on a serious note, alcohol actually deplinishes the body's supply of B1 and you have to get more. And most alcoholics arent health freaks, just saying. Such a sad situation
This is crazy! I didn't know the lead singer left the band last year. I saw them in concert yesterday not knowing this and when the guy came out I was like, "THAT'S NOT HIM" HAHA
Just saw smash mouth at a CA fair without knowing the lead singer was replaced. Its nice to see smash mouth still going strong, they could of easily hung it up. Im rooting for Steve to clean up. (Everyone makes mistakes)
This says so much as to why he is now passed. Before you judge people, know that this man lost his son at a very young age to leukemia. I know for myself, I'd probably be in the same position.
Stop it. I'm not saying it doesn't hurt I know he was hurting but addiction is a different animal. You start choosing your own addiction over the love that others try to give you. You isolate yourself. We have to stop giving ourselves excuses!
@fluxonite4254 that's called an excuse. I've seen people come out of some of the worst situations that would've made some people fold. It's all about your OWN desire
You’ve obviously never been an addict and/ or don’t know anything about it, if this is what you’re saying. When you have an addiction especially to this extent, you can lose yourself completely, it literally changes your brain chemistry. Just because one person was able too go through an extreme doesn’t mean another will be, we are all different people with different brains, you don’t get to just choose or decide what you are and aren’t able to deal with just because someone else was able to, you aren’t them.
You know what…. Here’s what pisses me off. People just record him and basically paint this picture of “oh he’s just a worthless drunk” but don’t stop to think at all what made lead to this. Dude lost his 6 month year old kid back in July 2001 to leukemia….. but yea, let’s just ridicule him and make him look like he’s “just a big ole loser” right? People are real pieces of trash in this world. Makes me sick.
Got upset the day of his death. Ever since All-Star came out when I was 9 years old I haven’t stopped listening to them. I grew out of listening to all of their music by the time I was 14. Then from then to now I listen to Fush Yu Mang and Astro Lounge. Anything after that sucks. If they kept that punk vibe from those two records they would have something. Fush Yu Mang has some great tunes still. Flo, Beer Goggles, Push, Nervous In The Alley. Sold out to Disney. The lineup changes they went through if you search through it is absolutely insane!! It’s no wonder why he was stressed with the band. Of course the death of his kid. His divorce. My all-time favorite band is Linkin Park. So, Chester Bennington went through alcoholism, drugs, sexually abused as a child. He was divorced. So, we all go through a lot of things in life. It just means money, and being a rockstar doesn’t buy happiness. A person’s choices or their life is what makes them happy or makes them suffer.
I meet a girl who was at a bar expressing her desperation of having a doctors recommended requirement of not drinking any more alcohol, period . Her drink of choice was vodka , I felt she knew it wasn’t going to end well if she did , tragically she was coming to the bar for support , I soon stopped myself , my last was in 2015 as a promise I made to take care of my Mother and Father’s Failing health . If you use it to forget your troubles you need to rely on something different , it’s like the devil waiting for you .
This is so sad. I pray that his soul is at eternal peace and for his loved ones to get through this. The people who let him go on stage are reprehensible
@@lewisb85 I see that they would lose a lot of money but maybe there is insurance for that or something. I would rather lose money than profit from exploiting someone and putting them on a stage when they are in this state
Hopefully people can learn from this and his passing wont be in vein. I was a reckless alcoholic for years and luckily sobered up....i mean i wrecked my organs and can feel my liver sitting in my body as i type this. I am sober but i accept anything and everything that stems from my choices.
RIP Mr. Harwell! Ill probably shed some tears next time i watch shrek....i have to ask though....why on earth did the band even let him play this show? I dont know the full extent of the situation so im speculating but if I were them id be cutting it off and forcing him to get help! I dont mean any disrespect to the remaining band members but if this was a serious issue for years then why are they playing gigs like this and making fools of themselves?
Is there anywhere to see the full video of this performance from the day? With all due respect, the guy and his band is a legend to me for creating the soundtrack to our childhoods, but I think even he would have to see the funny side in this all-time WOAT performance.
a lot of people have it, I'm sure. He has had issues for so long, the stories in the industry and outside of it are also out there of what a wasted asshole he could be. You say "legend" but they took his kid away for a reason. It isn't funny and it is a big deal to people who have had to deal with severe and violent alcoholics before, but hey -- enjoy your legend.
Wiki led me to this tragic moment in his life. I hope he makes a miraculous comeback and eases up on the sauce. Ifs clear he had a very bad drinking problem
@@jaxong.2701 it HAS happened but rare. I know someone who was told she was at end stage liver failure, went into hospice at under forty years old....she is the only one I know that somehow turned it around. For now. But hospice is usually end stage and the end of life as we know it.
About seventeen years ago I saw him on stage in San Jose. They were able to play a pretty good set but he was bitter and just yelling all sorts of mean stuff and complaining the whole set. It was so painful to watch he was flipping off people from his past and I don't know who he was talking to. I kept quiet about it because a lot of my classmates know him personally. So I never spoke out about my experience. But I knew from that day since he's fighting some kind of battle inner demons. Such a talented band. And Steve such a talented singer. May he rest in peace wirh the angels.
No alcoholic is functional, even though people use the term. They think they are and they continue drinking but everyone around them sees the change. That's not functioning its barely existing
@jw9099 all I'm saying is he clearly ain't a functional anything if he's dying. And he wasn't doing great in years past so the definition of functional is up for debate
