Steve Jobs speaks in 1983 at an Apple sales conference

What great memories. This was in the fall of 1983, several months before the Macintosh. I was an Apple Fortune 1000 Sales Rep in SoCal, and we reps were at the annual Apple Sales Conference, this time held at the Sheraton Hotel on the beach in Honolulu. We sales reps had been hired to sell Apple directly to large corporations, not via dealers to public hobbyists. The Lisa had been out for 18 months but sales had been dismal, in part because of the $10K price tag but mostly because of the lack of third-party software (just LisaWrite, LisaCalc, LisaDraw, and a few other in-house products). And our target customers (large corporations) were already in bed with IBM via years of mainframe purchases and were quickly bringing in IBM PCs. And who could blame them? IBM would be here forever, but Apple?--Maybe a flash in the pan, not someone you wanted to tie your future corporate career to. But one day at the Conference they rounded us up in the grand ballroom of the neighboring Royal Hawaiian Hotel (an old all-pink hotel, now gone) and Jobs gave this speech. First time we ever saw the Mac in the flesh, and the first time we ever saw the Commercial. Apple had paid a fortune to make the commercial, but the execs decided it was too expensive to run it for the Super Bowl in 1984. But the unbelievable hoots and hollers from all of us in that ballroom (you can see the delight on Steve's face) made them change their minds, and the rest is history. So THIS was the "first" introduction of the Mac, although to a company-only audience. But we collectively turned the tide on airing the 1984 commercial, to stunning effect.

There was that period between 1977 to 1984 when Ridley Scott was at the top of his game as a film director. Steve Jobs got him at the right time to make a commercial. Ridley Scott lost the plot in later years but in this period anything he did was almost genius level film making.
