Steve Kilbey of The Church speaking with Australian journalist and author Andrew McMillen for his book 'Talking Smack: Honest Conversations About Drugs', which was published in July 2014 by University of Queensland Press.
This clip was filmed at Steve's home in Sydney, Australia in February 2013, immediately after our hour-long interview on the topic of drug use of all sorts - illicit, legal and prescription - which was then published as one of fourteen chapters in 'Talking Smack'. (At one point the camera is blown from its perch by a strong wind through an open window - my apologies. This dramatic effect was purely coincidental.)
Steve Kilbey: "I'm a trustworthy, good guy, and I happen to take drugs. I just don't want people to believe the hype, that if you take drugs, you're necessarily an evil villain. You might be a silly person, or a weak person, but you're not a bad person."
An edited extract of the Steve Kilbey chapter from 'Talking Smack' was published in The Weekend Australian Review on 26 July 2014: www.theaustrali... (Note: the full chapter is around 6,000 words; the Review extract is cut down to around 3,000 words.)

'Talking Smack: Honest Conversations About Drugs' by Andrew McMillen (UQP, 2014)
Of all the creative industries, the most distinct link between drug use and creativity lies within music. The two elements seem to be intertwined, inseparable; that mythical phrase “sex, drugs and rock and roll” has been bandied about with a wink and a grin for decades. But is it all smoke and mirrors, or does that cliché ring true for some of our best-known performers?
In this fascinating book, journalist Andrew McMillen talks with Australian musicians about their thoughts on - and experiences with - illicit, prescription and legal drugs. Through a series of in-depth and intimate interviews, he tells the stories of those who have bitten into the forbidden fruit and avoided choking.
This isn’t to say that stories of ruin and redemption are avoided - they’re not. These celebrated performers have walked the straight-and-narrow path of alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and prescription medication, as well as the supposedly dark-and-crooked road of cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy, heroin and methamphetamine.
By having conversations about something that’s rarely discussed in public, and much less often dealt with honestly, McMillen explores the truths and realities of a contentious topic that isn’t going away.
'Talking Smack' is a timely, thought-provoking must-read that takes you inside the highs and lows of some of our most successful and creative musicians, including Paul Kelly, Tina Arena, Gotye, Steve Kilbey (The Church), Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon) and Holly Throsby.

Steve Kilbey is proof that music is really important. The people that make it are not.

STEVE GOT FAMOUS. HE MADE MONEY, HE HAS A HOME. HE GOT LUCKY. A LOT OF DRUG USERS DO NOT. DRUGS ARE GOOD FOR MEDICINAL USE...FOR YOUR HEALTH. THEY HAVE A PURPOSE. HOWEVER, WHEN YOU PLAY WITH DRUGS FOR RECREATION...MANY OF YOU WON'T BE SO LUCKY. DRUGS COST MONEY, TIME, AND BRAIN CELLS. THINK ON IT BEFORE YOU CAN LONGER THINK ON IT.

“Well, I wrote the most popular song to come out of Australia in the past 25 years. So how bad are they? “ or something like that.. great quote

I've got no problem with this. I wish I could have experimented more throughout the nineties. But alas, no drug dealers ever came my way, unless they were users looking for a fix. I tried salvia divinorum (spell?) which was good but I only tried it once (it's non-addictive so who knows why the Howard government surreptitiously banned it around 2005). Anyway, it's revealing to see someone talk so openly about "illicit" drugs.

Chronic = time/over/damage. And yep you're still looking pretty good man. BTW you're so right, drug issues are a social health issues that have become (decades ago) a legal issue, but that's another long story.

Love Kilbey he does not suffer fools gladly; and I agree with his attitude to the title. And yes might be helpful to talk about the abuse of our whole system and why would one be glad if there was not a conversation had? bizarre.

"Talking Smack" sounds more sexual than "Talking Drugs" . Kinda odd, given that the aim is, I suppose, is to demystify and replace the sexual or forbidden fruit innuendo that lurks menacingly for some people about heroin and replace it with frank notes from users. But the title itself is buying straight into that mystique, and even if the author explains (rationalizes?) why. I can understand Steve's initial suspicion. Don't wanna knock the project, just saying.

Steve's right. There is no such phrase "talking smack." What the hell is that? And speaking of actually "talking smack," why didn't they talk about Steve's long-term love affair with heroin? Something fishy here.

+lanceash hi there, we spoke about heroin at some length before I switched on the camera, this video was recorded as a 'post-interview'. You can read an edited excerpt of a chapter from my book concerning Steve's heroin use here: www.theaustralian.com.au/arts/review/the-church-frontman-steve-kilbey-reveals-his-battle-with-heroin/news-story/7f99a28b5f2936b85a0212c95a1537a4

Um, yes there is such a phrase and it’s been around for decades. There is most certainly nothing “fishy” about any of this.
@lanceash
@lanceash 2 месяца назад
@@Charliehund100 Gosh, has it really been 8 years since I made that comment? Yeah, since then I've heard several people say it. I just don't think it was that prevalent in my experience at the time. I think Steve was suspicious that the use of the term "smack" was some kind of lead-in to a discussion of heroin in specific. 8 years! It feels more like 2 at most.
