There's something about Steve Kuhn's style that makes my heart ache. There is such a profound longing the exudes from his work. It's not sadness or melancholy, which both plunge artists and listeners into maudlin emotion. His music is much more affecting.
Steve Kuhn is and has been one of the top jazz pianists for years. Steve Swallow is and has been one of the finest (the finest in my opinion) electric bass players for decades, and Billy Drummond is top flight as well. Glad to here this group and very happy to be hearing Steve Kuhn in concert in April.
Swallow just decided in 1969 that bass tone was moving in the direction of shit, so he just embraced it. If you're gonna have shitty tone, no need to muscle the upright bass. Might as well just play electric.
Have always loved "Trance." Kuhn, Jarrett, and Bley were my three favorite jazz pianists for decades. Still love them... Love this trio! Great drum solo! Wow!
Of all the pianists who dipped into, or referenced, or incorporated, the classics, I always thought it would be Kuhn who would make an album of improvs based on lines, or excerpts, or entire works - préludes, say - by Debussy, Ravel, Scriabin, maybe Sessions or Carter or Hindemith. Evans, for one example, had the chops and the sensibilities, but lacked, I guess, the confidence. Still waiting!
