Steve Lukather Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson
Hold the Line! Steve Lukather may be a bonafide rock star, but he’s also down-to-earth, self-effacing, self-aware, open-minded, hearted, reflective, enthusiastic, passionate, thoughtful, generous, and perhaps sweetest of all, a fanboy like us of his heroes. From the 6-year-old boy blown away by The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, George’s guitar specifically, to the grown man who came to play and friend not only George, but Paul, and closer than close with Ringo, his “boss” for the past decade. Fab stories of all three, not to mention much about Steve and then Jeff Porcaro, David Paich, with whom he began being a serious musician whilst still in high school. Stories about Steely Dan and their various incarnations, one which almost included him, Boz Scaggs, his first major gig, the formation of Toto, sessions, sessions, and more sessions, Dean Parks, Ray Parker, Jim Keltner, Larry Carlton, touring, alcohol, drugs, wild times, Michael Jackson, Thriller, Eddie Van Halen, Elton John, solo albums, his latest - Bridges bit.ly/40I9PH2 which is in heavy rotation in my kitchen, and his memoir, The Gospel According to Luke bit.ly/3QFLPPZ an unputdownable, crazy fun read. Just like Luke himself. The time flew. I feel like I’ve known him forever. And, like all great things, left me wanting more.

I would love Luke to be able to love himself as much as we do. I hate to see him feel like he has to constantly apologize for just being in times and places that he was. It doesn’t matter whether it was alcohol, or guitar effects in the 1980s. He inspired millions of musicians to become who they are and given billions of hours joy to hundreds of millions of people around the world. His very presence is a gift to mankind.

He loves himself. He's just grateful. He's seen a lot of others who didn't make it or who succumbed to health issues. He's spent his whole professional life trying to show the judgy critics that they had the band wrong.

Im a few years younger than Luke...his childhood was mine...when you grew up in that era there is a strong bond...i lived 20 mins from Luke and never knew it...his career took off like lightening...in high school TOTO's Hydra was out with All Us Boys and 99 as hits.

Vicki, I’ve seen Luke on several different people’s interviews, but this is THE humble Luke! I grew up with Toto’s music. I just a couple months older than Luke. But, I’ve never seen Toto live. 2024 will be the year that I do go to their show! It sounds like we grew up the same, but, I have no musical talent!! I’ve always loved all forms of music, but never mad it out of my first clarinet lesson book!😂 And, I spent my entire adult life as an underground coal miner! A far cry from a musician’s world! Thanks for this great interview! Luke is as down to earth as you can get!

Steve.... Love his art of singing his own praises, but HUMBLY. You're doing an interview. People want to know about your life. He does it with class and I don't think I've ever heard him say a negative thing about any other player. So admirable. As an entertainer on the lowest rung of the ladder myself, it's neat to see that from a guy who is so astoundingly talented. Again, you got to promote when you are asked to promote yourself. He does it so well. Role model musically, role model humanly. Thank you Steve!

Man, he’s such a cool guy. Sure, we all have our demons and he has no problem shining a light on them as he does here. Some people might say he’s no angel and he strikes me as the kind of guy who would say, “yeah, you’re probably right,” but to me, when you look at people and try to determine whether a person is more good than bad or more bad than good, he strikes me as simply a really, really great dude.

The story he told about Elton writing a song is incredible. I’ve seen interviews with some of the guys in Elton’s band, and they said the same thing. It’s very backwards from how most songs are written. Usually, it’s a chord progression and some kind of vocal melody that gets hummed over it, and then the drums and bass guitar, and usually, the actually lyrics are the last part of the process. The fact Elton could look at words on a piece of paper and write the music to the words is really shows what a natural talent he is. Great interview with Steve Lukather. You can tell he is gracious and feels blessed to have lived the life he has lived.

I also wonder...where did all his massive insecurities come from. He had supportive parents, he cared enough about his craft that he started it early, and his talent was apparent by all who crossed his path. In ever y interview of anyone who's worked with him, they've all said how they loved working with him and always acknowledged how incredible talented he was/is. He wouldn't have the professional pedigree that he does...if he sucked, or, was just, "ok". It's almost like his addictions sought out his insecurities...and sued them to gain entry into his life. I{"m glad that he shook them, and like I said in the post below, I'm glad that he felt that he was worth the effort, to make his life better. He's inspired me to get back into making music...30 years after my last effort as an engineer. And I have Steve to thank for that. Thank you Steve...for you.

Always good to listen to his stories. I had no idea he is 66. I grew up listening to the same groups he idolized,as well as a similar childhood with smoking and drinking at 14 or 15, had teenage friends who I would jam with. I changed my path and went to college at 21 and worked 40 yrs doing a job I really did not enjoy, but it paid the bills. Now I'm retired and getting back into guitar and hope I have at least another 15 yrs to enjoy guitar. Although some of my idols have passed , their music lives on.

I was fourteen years old when Toto’s debut album came out and I only had to hear “Hold the Line” one time for me to buy the LP the next day. I became a huge fan and I still remember listening to every song on that album over and over again. In 81 we moved to Italy and back then in Italy nobody knew much about the newer bands there was no MTV back then so when my cousins and Italian friends listened to my records I freaking blew their minds when they heard Toto, Foreigner, REO, Boston, Poco, Pat Benatar , The Cars and Van Halen for the first time. Needless to say I was very proud to have been the person to have influenced their musical journey and to this day after more than forty years they are all still big fans of these bands. Anyway thanks Steve you and your music were a big part of our lives all over the world.🤙

Rush's first concert in Cleveland was at the Old Agora, they played there 9x in 1974. WMMS was the station that broke all these bands. You can watch the first time i saw them on youtube because it was recorded, Many, Many bands recorded live shows there. I also saw Eddie Money 1977 at the Agora which was also recorded. I thought about him too, seeing as he has played with Luke at the Baked Potato and appeared recently at the Ed Asner autism benefit. But, wouldn't hitting the road take him away from his nightly Jimmy Kimmel gig. Seems like that job is what butters his bread.
