Select 1080 HD. This has been so popular I've now put it up in HD, 12528kbps. (My earlier upload was less than 4,000kbps). Steve's full performance at the Universal Ampitheatre from September 28 1979 from the Steve Martin 3-dvd box set "The Television Stuff." Although the DVD source is clearly videotape, it's not too bad and anyway it's the best quality available. Because this live performance was preceded by a studio based sketch it starts abruptly, but it's complete.
As the DVD's source is clearly videotape, the last thing anyone needs is a weak upload of vintage material, so I took a 1080 HD rip of the standard definition DVD and the best thing about that is RU-vid allocates better sound to HD uploads. I hope you enjoy this innovative and inspiring comedy stand up.

This concert was filmed in ‘79 at the Amptitheater. It was never shown in it’s entirety til ‘84. Classic Steve Martin. This is the Steve i like. The Wild and Crazy guy persona is iconic. The suit, the arrow through the head, happy feet etc. great stuff. Steve turned stand-up comedy inside out. He mocked it, played with it. He taught audiences and younger comics: it’s ok if u don’t fit Pryor, Carlin, Brenner, or Klein’s style. U can still be funny doing YOUR thing.

He delivers a succinct but earnest summation of one of how long it took him to attune his entertaining abilities (i.e., magic, banjo playing, sketch comedy writing, acting); how long it took to be an unknown stand-up comic playing cafe open mics to nobody but the owner for him to figure out his on-stage persona; and how long it took for the bitter taste of success to settle in after a wild & crazy rise to the top.

It's worth pointing out that Steve decided very early in his career to stay away from all drugs, and he stuck to it. Sadly, Robin got sucked down that black hole, which did nothing to help the depression that most comics have. (Steve, too.) When I think of those two guys, who were so similar and had such a monster effect on my youth, I think that's what made the difference in their lives. Miss the hell out of Robin.

Listening to him read his book "Born Standing Up" is a wonderful experience if you're a fan -- it sheds light on how he came to be who he was and do what he did. Personally, I think he elevated stand-up comedy to an artform -- I'm not surprised that sometimes when he sees the old stuff he doesn't even understand what he was doing.

I agree but there are too many people that are too uptight about some of the content. Can’t laugh like we used to about anything and everything. True. Steve grew up watching vaudeville legends. He does it all: props, jokes, juggling, singing, banjo, balloon creatures. He doesn't just tell jokes. He's versatile and just likes to have fun with his audience.

Can we just put some respect on this man right here. We don’t produce artists of this calibre anymore. Comedian, musician, writer and actor. Martin along with John Candy and John Hughes made my favourite childhood movie. Plains Trains and Automobiles. I watched that film with my dad and we laughed until will cried. That film has so much heart it’s just beautiful. I watched it recently decades later and the ending made me cry. I suppose I’m getting sentimental with age. Steve Martin like Candy is a legend and should never be forgotten.

My friends and I did as 18 years old kids. SNL was a must watch and Steve Martin was a rock star. The Blues Brothers were amazing and then Steve Martin hits a grand slam. We were fortunate to watch a terrific performance. I remembered almost all the jokes playing this back. Great night and for $9.75.

Some context for the year 2021: In 1979, Los Angeles, at a Steve Martin show, nearly everyone would have smoked weed in the audience. It wasn't legal. So you waited until the lights went down and everyone lit up. That's why the lighter tributes, now smartphone flashlights, at rock shows in the 1970s. It was the "inside d/l" thing to do. You went to shows to rebel and get high in public. So everyone was high and wasted. This sort of concert culture would abruptly end the next year. By 81 ushers were forbidding weed (but not tobacco) at shows. nationwide.

The younger half of today's audience won't believe how really big Steve got with this act when he started out. He really struck gold with it, to sold out shows across the land. Then his movies hit big too. So much of it was new/unique then. No surprise it simply couldn't last forever... good because the novelty of a lot of it did wear off. Plus Steve moved on to fewer and more serious goals, and grew 'comfortable'. Martin stayed popular, but did fade... because he did less... then almost nothing (by choice)... the proverbial shooting star that we fondly recall. But his talents and humor were real.

People have forgotten that he wasn't a comedian. He was a ROCK STAR COMEDIAN. He was probably the first comedian to do stadiums. He was that big in the seventies! He was doing sold out shows every night for years! Not to mention that his act consisted of the original idea that trying not to be funny was hilarious. A genius and an innovator! You have to see the STEVE documentary!

Amazing stage craft from Steve Martin. I have to say stadium comedy like this just doesn't work. Everyone turned up and wanted to hear and see the greatest hits. I've pointed this out to Steve Martin hundreds of times through twitter the only response I've ever got was an emoji of a boiled swede

Dude im a 2000 kid, and i find Steve is really great. Better than any modern movie, because every today is trash movies witg bad story brainwashing and non sense just using good actors to spread trash. So browsing old stuff has for me already 10x more view time than anything modern, I can tell you anything moderb I dont watch a second time. This comedy by steve is already watched 3x this evening. -wr

I doubt that. I am a 2000 kid, and I can tell you any age finds this dude great. Modern movies are just full of trash I didnt watch one movie of the last 5 years not a single time again. While I watched classics again alot. Already this bra's shoe 3x this evening

Haha indeed! The camera supported this very well fair enough and mind you. Overall outstanding production, not only from him but the setup. Btw Im a 2000 kid; really great compared to almost any modern "trash" from flopoywood If I am allowed to express myself that "clearly".
