how lucky are we that the punch brothers exist, every one of them would b the best individual player in any other band. so talented sometimes i hear one of their songs and i think to myself theres no way they could actually a song so complicated live. then theres a video where they do it effortlessly
The cool thing here is a bunch of young, very talented musicians are able to bring 'fairly' traditional Old Time American music to a national audience! And I love their take on the traditional tune.
On top of that, Steve Martin awarded their banjo player 50 grand for being the best in the world, judged by Martin, Bela Fleck, and other great players.
Are you kidding me?? Steve Martin is sick on the banjo!! He's the man!! He's been playing banjo for such a long time...I think the banjo was even apart of his first acts as a comedian...
God they're SO good! I love Bluegrass, and the Punch Brothers- each one of them is so incredibly talented. I recently saw the documentary about them, How to Grow a Band, and thought it was so cool to have an inside view of how they work together and the struggles they had starting out. Awesome doc about an amazing band.
@0109RGM Steve Martin is playing with the Punch Brothers... Chris Thile has been known as a phenomenal player with his days playing Nickel Creek... The song they played is the Punch Bros. song "Rye Whiskey"...
Lots of people who clearly do not appreciate talented musicians. Chris Thile is a musical genius...Steve Martin is a very excellent, prominent banjo player. SMH, go back to your bands who need autotune to sound decent.
Chris Thile plays everything from Radiohead to Bach, and has played duets with Doc Watson and Chet Atkins among others. He's pretty impressive in his mastery of his instrument on so many levels.
I chanced upon Chris checking out The Praire Home Companion where he appears to have stood in for Garrisson Keller. What a thrill to hear his music.! x
Steve Martin is SHOWCASING them. Thanks to his fame and considerable skill on the banjo, not to mention his ability to compose (listen to Rare Bird Alert cd), fine banjo players like Pickles get on Letterman. Considering that he IS playing with and DOES play with the best (Steep Canyon Rangers are also darn good), I'd say he does rather well for being 67 and playing banjo kind of as a vocation. Chris Thile, otoh, was BORN to play mandolin.
Actually yes he is. He won a championship when was around 13 and has been recording professionally since around the same time. On his album Deciever he plays THRITY NINE different instruments and as Steve said he won a MacArthur genius grant.
some family friends of mine have a cottage on the same lake as steve and they can sometimes hear him from all the way across the lake!! amazing banjo playerr
Epic, music especially with Steve on the Banjo I remember watching this live when Steve gave Noam the award for being top banjo along with the fifty thousand dollars. Great night Indeed, as always. With the TPB.
Is Steve playing clawhammer banjo here? For some reason I always thought he played Scruggs style, but I guess I was mistaken? Anyways, love Gabe's harmonies on this tune.
@foxfireman188 LOVE IT !!!!! MAN I wish I could play SOMETHING !!!!!! It is great to see somebody who has been playing as long as he has STILL get into it that much.
Yep, that's Kris. I have known him ever sense he got out of High School. Best mandolin player on the planet, period. Kris owns a Grammy. How many do you have? He has a gold record. How many do you have?
I came here for Chris Thile of Nickel Creek, of course, but I know a bit about Steve Martin, the bluegrass artist, playwright and author, more actually than I know about his acting (before my time, really), so I love him for being versatile!
They are sooo good! ...and with Steve Martin nonetheless. I haven't seen a more enjoyable group effort since the Boss and Wallflowers years ago. In fact, this may be better.
I just discovered this band through their cover of the Cars, and I was mesmerised! I've never liked this style of music in my life, yet I can't stop watching every video of them that I come across. Could someone please tell me the name of my new favorite song?
is this the guy from nickle creek? 'the lighthouse tale' sent my musical interest in different directions and i landed on this video. maybe i wasn't looking hard enough, but i didn't see steve martin. should i watch again?
@MrStitches123 Steve Martin has been a banjo virtuoso for a LONG TIME; the Muppet Show is the tip of the iceberg. If you said that in front of Chris Thile he'd probably respond that THEY were the ones who "didn't belong" on that stage, but that it was very kind of Steve.
Assuming you're talking about the mandolinist Chris Thile, Chris Thile has been playing the mandolin since he was 8 and have you ever even picked up a mandolin? doubt it. i play guitar and just recently picked up the mandolin and let me tell you. its hard. please listen to the other stuff he has played: "House of Tom Bombadil", and "Ode to a butterfly" i agree with AgentJade85 you know nothing about technical ability on a musical instrument.
@MrStitches123 I'd suggest listening to Steve's long history of banjo playing...then go buy The Crow and Rare Bird Alert...hell i'd even buy them for you if it meant an education in decent music...THEN come cack and say he doesn't belong up there. Everyone to their own opinion i guess but Steve is very good at what he does with a banjo.
