Steve McQueen was one of Hollywood’s highest paid stars - and one of its most difficult, most rebellious and, when he wished, most charming. His story is told with film clips from his greatest performances.
Abandoned by his father, he was a reform school kid with nothing going for him and a giant chip on his shoulder. He joined the Marines, but never stayed far from trouble.
Then he discovered acting - and the woman who would be with him for most of his meteoric career.
His story is told with film clips from his greatest performances, including The Magnificent Seven, Love With The Proper Stranger, The Cincinnati Kid, The Reivers, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Bullitt.
Also shown are home movies - and the recollections of those who knew him best, including Steve’s first wife, Neile McQueen Toffel and their children, Terri and Chad, fellow actors Chuck Norris, Karl Malden, Don Gordon, as well as directors, producers, agents and the racing buddies who saw it all happen. Narrated by James Coburn.

Well I too am 52 I also cried when Steve McQueen died, I also thought he was old too not realising I would one day get to be older than him and I don’t feel old (I know it’s a different era) but I do agree he sure fitted a lot into those 50yrs but to this day and going forward always try dress like him n without even knowing act n thinking like him ! The nearest thing to him today is Brad Pitt or Mel Gibson like Errol Flynn (another who died at 50) some of the greatest actors of all time. I miss him not like my Dad but a big brother!

maybe you missed it but he never made the jump in the Great Escape, that was Bud Elkins. His star was fading in the 70s and fading very badly. He lost out to guys who showed off the muscles like Bronson, Eastwood, Sean Connery and a young Harrison Ford and Stallone. Steve McQueen had no muscles to show off. Movie goers were over the moon with movies like Rocky, Star wars and Empire Strikes Back so they had a good idea what movies should be like. In the end he made movies that no one wanted to see like the Enemy of the People, Tom Horn and The Hunter which all failed miserably at the box office. So much cool you can play in your mid 40s. You are welcome for that intelligent insight and observation.

@brianwalsh1401
@brianwalsh1401 4 года назад
I agree. Our childhoods form the foundation of our lives. Steve McQueen's childhood was a mixed bag. He had an uncle who took care of him but was abandoned by his mother and father. His mother took him back at 12 but his stepdad was a jerk. He was then sent off to the boys home until 16. I think his childhood was a 2 edge sword and might probably had a lot to do with his drive in life to succeed but also left him empty and looking for happiness outside himself. His first wife Neely seems to be just a wonderful woman who also had a lot to do with his success but he couldn't just be happy with her, he had to look elsewhere. I always thought and have heard this in a couple of documentary's about McQueen, that he really identified with the part of Jake Holman in "The Sand Pebbles" which is why he did such a great job with that role and the movie is one of my favorites. IMO I think it's his best role.

There is a well known story, left out of this documentary that I feel is very important in describing the character of Steve McQueen.He was filming a movie in a large city, I forget the name of the movie and the city.., on the way to the set, Steve and the person he was with were passing an inner city “park”.., basically a dusty, grassless dirt field where some very poor young boys were playing baseball with no equipment or even bases. Steve made his friend stop the car so he could speak to the boys. The next day he stopped there again only this time he had the car loaded with brand new baseball equipment he purchased himself which he gave to the boys as well as spending time with them that should have been spent on production of the film. The only way you can live up to such a life, is to keep your eyes and heart open and never dismiss an opportunity to do good when you can. He probably did a thousand times more for the spirts of those young men that day then the mayor of that town, or governor of that state could ever do.

Excellent story of a man. It brings out different sides of McQueen, mysteries, yet there's a thread. Even if you don't know who he is, it's a great story of a person in search of himself, a person who struggles, yet who is fueled by, his passions, a person who had nothing given to him, who had to figure it out and work hard. Watch it.

Hollywood today is about promoting Marxist ideology. Think about it they have convinced the whole of America that abortion is a matter of contraception and a woman's right. Everybody knows that when somebody kills a pregnant women that two lives have been ended but that logic does not extend to a baby in the womb with a functioning brain and heart. I doubt America is finished look at the riots and the media's reaction and yet the elections are still considered a contest.

My friend had a interesting story about Steve McQueen. When he was still a teen, my friend had to deliver a brand-new, custom made Porsche Targa to Mr. McQueen, at his house in the Hollywood Hills. He knew that he'd never drive a car like this again, so he took it out on what he called, "a little test drive," doing donuts in the street, flying down the freeway at far above the legal limit, joyriding to his heart's content. He had so much fun driving the car that he was an hour late, keeping McQueen anxiously waiting for the car all that time. When he finally pulled up, McQueen was standing there. He looked at my friend and said slyly, "So, how does she handle??" My friend simply said, "O.K.." Then McQueen handed him a hundred dollar bill, and smiled. He knew.

Culture has changed and people are much softer today. In McQueens days the actors and actresses had life experience before they made it in Hollywood. Today they tend to come from college and have a relative in the industry. Completely different people. Steve McQueen, Coburn, Garner and Marvin all served in the military before they actually made it in Hollywood. Clint Eastwood served in the Army and he actually had his aircraft crash in the ocean and he had to swim to safety so that is his experience in Sully on screen.

They kind of glossed over his last film, The Hunter. It's based on a true story in which he played Ralph Thorson, the last full-time modern day bounty hunter. He wasn't a "gun for hire" which implies a mob assassin. He tracked down criminals who skipped bail or violated their parole and had a bounty on them. He considered his job to bring them back alive and collect the bounty. If you're looking for a good read it's a very interesting autobiography. The movie wasn't great but not bad.

(29:34) Yes - 'The Crown Caper' was the initial working title for 'The Thomas Crown Affair.' Since it had first been written with other actors in mind, once the decision had been made to give the part to McQueen, screenwriter Alan Trustman spent a week working 16 hours a day watching his films, taking note of what he was like, what he could do well and not do well -- then rewrote the part accordingly. McQueen was so pleased with the rewrite he reportedly said of Trustman, 'I don't know how, but the son of a bitch knows me.'
