Thanks to you I just got started on the path after 50 years of play. I am doing everything I can to share your beginner lessons with the world Dr. Steve. You have discovered the cure for music cancer that is killing the world. Music cancer causes 90% who purchase a guitar to give up. Rock on doctor.

Steve, 2 years ago I picked up a guitar for the first time in 40 years (army, family and teaching). I needed some form of physical therapy after I injured my hands in Afghanistan in 2013. Last time I played was 1977. I've listen to dozens of lessons online and you are the first instructor I understand. I'm very happy to have found you. A BIG thank you brother.

Wil read your post and amazed at the almost mirror image of our adult lives. I stop playing years ago because I couldn’t write or play without my wife getting jealous of some imaginary girl, smashed guitar then never played seriously for years. Through in 5 deployments Iraq Afghan Pakistan distroyed back and ptsd that has made short term mem none existent. I total feel ya bro. Rock on

Steve, I have to say I've seen a lot of guitar videos over the years that I thought had at least some level of merit, but yours are the best bar none. Everything about your content, your presentation style, your personality, etc. is just spot on for me. Thanks for putting this material together - I feel nearly sure I'll spring for one of your courses; I just need to figure out which one. This video in particular is excellent - most of the bits of information in it I already knew, but you just brought them together with such clarity that I feel like I actually "get" the big picture better. Keep up the great work, man!

I've been picking at my guitar for 40 years or so and I've become technically proficient within limits. When I started out, I learned the basic chords, but I've never had the luxury of having the slightest understanding of music theory. Frankly, I always got lost when I tried taking that next step. Last month, I stumbled across Steve Stine's excellent series of lessons and lights began turning on in the musical wasteland inside my head. Thank you Steve, for your whiteboard and your logical progression of lessons. Your bite sized lessons have helped me to make sense of my instrument in a way I never would have imagined.

I grew up learning by ear didn't have access to this, so now i play very well by ear. Theory is important so ive been trying to learm but it just doesn't make semse , it never has but for some reason i can just play on or over everything that i come across. Theres something be said for for both methods. Im learning the theory because i want to, but I have never walked into a session and not been able to keep up or even move past folx who know theory. I feel like sometimes folx grt so lost in theory holes they cant just let the music flow. Hoping this will begin to make sense but I really think you folx need to realize there's real esr players who have impeccable ears out there and saying definitely thay we are not good for having thay ability feels narrow minded. Ive literally seen folx say what you're saying then watch me play or sing and say, you dont know any theory? And im like i just started learning theory... but have been playing complex shit forever , my ear just gets it i dont know why, its not a bad thing, ears are great, and theory is too, thats what you should be saying, learn both techniques. Learn both.

I understand how to count the whole steps to get two, but im not understanding how you got 1 1/2 steps at all.
@mephistovonfaust
@mephistovonfaust 8 лет назад
Because there are half steps in between the notes. You count in thirds: C->D->E->F->G->A->B->C You have half steps from the third to the forth and from the seventh to the eighth. That means: C -> D = Fullstep (1) D -> E = Fullstep (1) E -> F = Halfstep (1/2) F -> G = Fullstep (1) G -> A = Fullstep (1) A -> B =Fullstep (1) B -> C =Halfstep (1/2) Now the C Chord consist of C, E, and G. From C to E you have two Fullsteps, from E to G on the other hand one Fullstep and one Halfstep. That's why it's 2 over 1 & 1/2. You can convert this on all other Chords.

E-to-F and B-to-C are half steps. A-to-B, C-to-D, F-to-G, G-to-A are whole steps.

Because there are no sharps/flats in between B and C or E and F

Did you get an answer? If not: the way we tune musical instruments results in 12 half steps in an Octave (8 notes, like from C to C). The tonal 'distance' from one note to the next note higher is either 1 half step or 2 half steps. C->D is 2 half steps or 1 whole step. There are only 2 intervals (distance between 2 notes) in a major scale that have 1 half step. That's E->F and B->C. All the rest are 2 half steps. So in a Triad, where you are looking at the steps between the root, third and fifth, just count the half steps between the two notes. You'll get 2 whole steps(4 half steps) or 1 1/2 steps, depending on where you start. If you count all the half steps now you'll get 12. The reasoning for having the two half step intervals is your ear. The way you hear music that is 'pleasing'. Check out google for a more in depth discussion on 'musical intervals'. There are lots that very good. Steve might have covered this in other lessons, I'm not all the way through. I'd check his lessons first. Best of luck.

I learned so much in this video Steve! You paid for your music education and I appreciate that you offer your time and simplify the concepts. Expertly Well taught and clean. Nobody is self taught. We all learn from generous people like you. When I finally can make music (only skill building for now) you will be part of the reason and will pay it forward. Thank you!

I did not understand this the first time I watched it. Then today I stumbled upon another creator who made a video about turning a major scale into chord progressions, and he mentioned the M-m-m-M-M-m-d formula without getting into the technical part yet. So I didn't understand that video as well. I remembered this video (vaguely; had to search for a little while) because of that formula, and now I am back here, simply amazed by these theories, how they all connect and are applied. I guess what I'm saying is thank you. Thanks to you and all the other creators here who are putting out content for us. Thank you. :)

Of all the folks providing guidance on guitar, this is by far the most professional, knowledgable and valuable channel to learn. I have found answers here that no professional music treacher have been able to provide. Perhaps it’s just my own wierdness that causes the confusion. Well, in that case, this guy “gets” me.

I commented on another video but I wanted to say here that THIS was the first video I watched by you and, after playing guitar on and off for years and learning basic theory on keyboard, put everything together for me and completely demystified the fretboard, which has always seemed insurmountably confusing to me, but not anymore! :D I still have a lot to learn but I feel like I'm in good hands now. Thanks Steve!
