We are back on Steve Strebel's On 30 model railroad to see his new Lakeside Resort Town, "Knowair". We have seen the build process a bit here on the show, but it is DONE!! And its amazing. Check out the cool NIGHT scenes too!!
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Steve Strebel's "O" scale railroad is one of the best model railroads in America and has been features in many magazines including Model Railroader, Railroad Model Craftsman and the The Narrow Gauge Gazette. The railroad is best known for the hundreds of scratch built structures, most with full interiors.

I have been visiting Steve's railroad for 4 years.. And every time I look at it, I see something that I haven't seen before! Since My last visit, Steve saw something on his railroad that HE had not seen before!! Hello Dolly!! LOL!
@karynfelix-the-Cat
@karynfelix-the-Cat 6 лет назад
I can't believe how much Steve's railroad has grown, in the 4 short years which I have known it! His attention to detail is amazing! Not only are there more structures (including out houses...) than one can count, every single structure has a detailed interior!! A fair amount of those interiors have lighting as well!! Both Steve, and Al, have a real talent in building these structures, as well as all of the different trains on the railroad. Again.. My hat goes off here! I can't even imagine building a locomotive from scratch... as my talents in this area would result in a finished product resembling something from Dr. Seuss! I really can't wait for the big NMRA National Convention, when the Big Boy is finally ready to make it's debut! The upcoming N scale convention in June will be the appetizer, wetting our whistles for the convention!! Looks like we sill have much to do to get ready! Very exciting!! :D

If only we could get ahold of a real "Honey I shrunk the kids" machine, shrink down and step in that wonderful, detailed scenery, ourselves!! There is so much exquisite attention to details, the building, the people, the interiors, the rails, the lifts, the stairs, the signs, at any moment, it almost seems that everything in the scenes is going to come to life and start moving on its own! As if, if you listened ever so closely, you could listen in on the conversations of the towns people, say hello, and they would answer back! So very, very, very, very, COOOOOLLLLL!! FANTASTIC video and narrative on this!!! Simply, WONDERFUL!!!

Wow, Knowair has become a great place. Not only the level of the models are excellent, but Steve (even with the help of Al) make it so quickly, it's incredible. When I know how much time to make a pine with Al method, I prefer to know count the pine trees on Steve layout (4 pine trees and 2 half trees for background in O scale is enough for me, and I don't have more place). But the layout is so complex that I can still not see the full picture. You should use one of these mini-drone for taking video, Steve's layout maybe be the best place to use one.
@karynfelix-the-Cat

I think this layout would be a wonderful candidate for some POV videos, and it would take more than one. You need a driver's eye view but then you'd also need the view of passengers in a coach, likely both sides, and then probably a conductor's view from the caboose. Please make this happen!!! It would be amazing to feel like I was a little person inside the layout enjoying all the views!
@ToyManTelevision

Take a look at the play list on Steve's railroad. Go to the playlist tab. We have some old footage of just that. Need a lot more!!! Mostly in that show we were showing how we do that with a Go Pro.
@ByrdMann2010
@ByrdMann2010 6 лет назад
I've seen that video and it's very well done. With the newer smaller Go-Pros it should be even easier. Something as simple as mounting a camera on a flat car and pushing it ahead of the locomotive should produce a pretty good "driver's eye view" and there are many POV videos already on RU-vid that do just that, just not on layouts that are as nicely finished as this one. I'd really like to get the feel of being inside this layout and for an extended run, perhaps one that traverses the many branches.

At 16:24, one of the bogies of the passenger car is partially hanging off the rails on that trestle! You could have had a derailment there! Tell Steve to use his cheaper equipment up there in case it falls, or install a catch wire (made of fishing line?) so that if anything falls off, it doesn't smash to pieces on the floor.

Wow, Steve never fails to amaze me with his layout! Though I do believe it's safe to say he's running out of "Bottle" if he keeps building at this rate! One thing I've got to ask is what is Steve's secret to modeling stone work!? Whether it be buildings, foundations, or retaining walls, I have to say the end results are beautiful! I ask as I'd like to model several stone buildings myself and I'm always looking for new methods for modeling.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 6 лет назад
Its SO SIMPLE. And looks SO GOOD. We should do a show on that... ANYWAY. He builds out of balsa. Thickish balsa. Then he burns the mortar lines with a "wood burning tool" (an old soldering iron) with a sharp tip (use a file to make it sharp) Once you have the deep lines in, round off the "stone" with the side of the iron. Little dents, angles, stone stuff. NOW lightly rub patching plaster over it. Not wall board mud, but the fast set patching stuff. (I like crawfords spackle) Use a damp cloth to remove any excess. The goal is to hide the wood grain. Now paint. Make every stone a bit different. Now back to the crawfords spackle. Really get it into the mortar spaces. And remove the rest with a damp cloth. And just keep adding dry brush paint, chalk, what ever you like to do stone finishes. AND sometimes I come back with another coat of crawfords spackle. Steve now trusts me to use his system on HIS LAYOUT!!! (I did most of the underground city and like half of the stone work at the port) On the retaining walls, I did cheat. I used an old wall casting from Chooch. Buy one in a shrink wrap. Carefully open the package, toss the casting in a box and use it somewhere else. Take the shrink wrap and lay it out flat, (unless you are doing a curved wall) and pour hydracal plaster in it. Do that a bunch of times until you have enough to make your wall. Cut and file and then I usually mount that ON a thick balsa wall, so I can burn sections if needed. That how i did the port wall. Same finish, crawfords spackle and paint.

Do you think you could do s video of the railroad from the lowest part of the rail line to the very top. And do it with the camera on the train?

Are Steve and Al master model railroaders?

Steve says he has no interest. BUT I think soon he will call in the judges. We are pushing for that. AL is almost there.

I like N scale a lot. I almost have the entire trio of the UP steam engines. 844, Big Boy #4014, and soon Challenger #3985.

Toy Man Television what do you mean “where’s it at?” I guess you didn’t know I own a Kato UP#844, and now an Athearn Big Boy #4014 in N scale. Soon I will have Challenger #3985. And a Kato UP#844 will DCC and Sound. The one I have right now is DC only. It will work well with the re released SP#4449. But to do a doubleheader with 844 and 4014 I need an 844 with DCC and Sound. Kato has also released FEF#838 sister to 844 and being used as a spare parts engine for 844.

I love Florida!! The great thing about living in Florida, is the lack of snow! Not so with Cheyenne Wyoming. There are times when the entire state is closed ( Interstate 80 ) due to blowing and drifting snow. We do plan on visiting Florida in the near future!!

My advice to Steve ... invest in a nice power screwdriver lest you get wrist fatigue.

Its his only exercise. Ours are spoon curls. And forks....

I'm sure he has one. However... It's close quarters in many spots. I have actually seen Steve work with a jewelers loop and microscopic tools. Steady handed for sure!!

Small problem with that. Well two. Really small 30 inch railroad and the bigger problem is Steve tore it out. Taking the layout apart. Starting over with a new layout
