Rebuilding Steve's On30 Layout - Christmas Train 2019

As Christmas approaches we are back to Steve Strebel's rebuilding of his amazing "O" scale model railroad. The new section is On30 where the old parts of the railroad are On3.
We are back to Steve's layout to check on the rebuilding and new construction of his layout. After 40+ years of work on the layout, he suddenly decided to tear it down, sell it off and move out of state. But after hip surgery, he opted to rebuild it instead! The new layout will be all at bench height, no more than 30 inches from an aisle and everything easy to get to.
Yet the new railroad is already shaping up to be another world-class model railroad. Steve is perhaps best known for his scratch-built structures, his old railroad having about 150 of them. Most of these he sold when he tore down the layout after Al's death.
Steve is scratching building new structures, and also keeping any structures he had not sold, AND reusing structures from his old MRS layout. Also using quite a few structures built by Al Badham before his sudden death 2 years ago.

Steve tells us we slightly misstated the number of scratch built structures on the old railroad. We said about 150. It was 256!!!!!!wow!

Arriving in life is just another way of saying dying. And too many spend their lives “Waiting for Godot”. The key is not thinking there is something wrong with playing. Screwing around. Fir some odd reason all to many think that’s a sin. Totally wrong. While in fact it’s the reason we exist! Motto #7. Necessity may be the mother of invention, but the dad is screwing around!

So I can understand the move towards more traditional layouts where you can easily reach into the layout without any extra overreach of access points and arm-length accessibility. The body can never keep up with the imagination, and that's wholly understandable! Enjoy the hobby in comfort! I will say though I will definitively miss the AMAZING scale and wonder of the old layout. Canyons deeper than your arm or trestles and towns higher than one's own head that needed ladders and leaning to get up into. It really sparked the imagination with how wild and crazy it can get, I love it! But still, I wish the best of luck to Steve's new endeavors in rebuilding the layout and I can't wait to see more updates in the future! Thanks for posting and Merry Christmas!

Hi! Yup the huge mountains were amazing. On the MRS we had one mountain that was over 8 feet of scenery under a 12 foot ceiling. But the real joy for all of us now comes at the workbench. And that’s not bad at all.

I was very disappointed when you posted the video of Steve ripping up the layout. But then hearing he was rebuilding it then seeing it as it has come back to life. Very heart warming to be honest. You were right their RR had grown to the point nothing more could be done. Now Steve has another go at building few new layouts for the new project. The new project has given him something to focus on and put his creative energy and know how into. In short something to live for, a reason to get up in the morning and greet the day.

This is one of the most inspiring On30 layout i have ever seen. I like HO because of the possibility of having mainlines and lots of lineside structures and industry. Most On30 layouts i have seen show remote locales with few tracks and limited industry. This really makes me want to go BIG in On30 i love his trackwork, multilevel and finally the climax and mallet crews dont have to live in the remote woods after they clock out...there may be some real city slickers with the coal, power plant and factories.

Steve (and I) love building structures. Al as well when he was with us. And while I love huge urban buildings Steve loves groups of small rural structures. We both love waterfronts. It's great to hear that both of you are much better, making it easier to screw around. Steve's railroad is advancing too. I love the way he crams everything into the scene. The rail road is part of his scenery, structures and so forth, not the other way around. It takes a great eye and artistic ability to "sort of" reverse engineer a model, something most modelers fail at to one extent or another. There are few really great model builders, and just like John Allen, Steve is one of the best. I wish I could do it, but I just don't have the eye for it.

Brilliant. One or two of the model railways I follow have, in the last couple of years, been torn down and started again. Seems to be the same with Steve's.

One of the hardest part about a hobby is deciding when enough is good enough. If I could I'd build a room full, floor to ceiling. Reality check, I can no longer build on any more then table height. And even that is going to be a struggle. Get well soon, both of you. Thx again IGN

I’m not sure if it’s an advantage or disadvantage this getting old! Where it seems to be a disadvantage to not be able to climb up ladders and crawl under a bench work, I can’t say that that was never any fun in the first place. I once found on an 7.5 min topo map a hint of an old mine high in the mountains of Nevada. It took me three hours to walk up there. It was not easy. And there was an old one man shack, and a fully complete mine track, literally cut out of the side of a mountain, barely wide enough to walk on with a few hundred sheer foot drop on one side, but with mine cars still on the rails. I had to jump across a 3 foot ore shoot space over that same a few hundred foot drop) to get to see the cars. but wow what an experience. And so untouched and not vandalized over maybe a century because it was so inaccessible. Why mention this? Because the old railroad was kind of like that. So many treasures in out of the way spaces, but not accessible. In a way, seeing what Steve has done with is structures from your videos, that was kind of a pity. Almost like the Louvre putting the Mona Lisa on the ceiling. I do think the new layout will highlight the real skill, craftsmanship and art that Steve has done on a far more accessible and approachable level for so many more to see and enjoy.

He’s keeping the outer loop in 0N3 And building the new section in On30. He just fell in love with the new Bachman locomotives when they came out, something like 20 years ago. And he’s been buying them ever since . They are just fun. The railroad is the Rio Grande and Pacific. The thinking being that when General Palmer made the decision to head west instead of to Mexico City he rightfully should have made it all the way to the Pacific instead of just to Salt Lake City. So on Steve’s Railroad Palmer has built all the way to the bay area. This is the Pacific port for the Denver in Rio Grande Western.

This time of year, I get nostalgic. I have a copy of John Grams "Toy Train Memories". Any chance for a tinplate video from you before Xmas? 🎅🏻

So much published about John Allen's Gorre & Daphetid railroad. Anything similar about Steve's railroads? Any published books for example?

Some of the scales and sizes (such as mentioned in this video) are unfamiliar to me. How about a video on these. I know O, HO, N, Z, and a few others but beyond that I would love an expert's opinion. Tutorial, please?

Is O on 3O the same scale as Lionel?
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 4 года назад
Nope. Same scale, 1:48. But the On30 runs on HO track gauge. And On3 is about .1 inch wider. So close. But 3/4 wide. Lionel is 1 1/4 inches wide.
