A week ago our good friend and fellow railroad modeler Alan Badham shuffled off this mortal coil. We take a look back at over a hundred scratch built O scale models.
Al was a legendary scratch builders with scores of awards from national and regional modeling contests, well known even with the IPMS, (International Plastic Model Society)
Al was a great friend and was often on the show, giving tips on building pine trees or a proper sweet vermouth Martini. Al often helped with Steve's great O scale layout also featured often on the channel.
Al began modeling in wood in N scale over 50 years ago, later moving on to styrene plastic modeling in O scale. Modeling in several gauges, O standard, On3, On30, On2, and even now and then, On18.
His favorite era was the wood car steam era, 1890 - 1905. And loved east coast structures and railroads, including the 2 foot Sandy River and Rangly Lake, yet also modeled Colorado Narrow Gauge, the Denver and rio Grande Western as well as much more obscure lines like the Utah Central. Is favorite railroad was the Sabastacook and Moosehead!

Oh, Al........... My first introduction to Al Badham, was right here on the channel! It was in the early days of Toy Man Television.. Before Dale and I had officially met.. But right after Rat Fink had formerly introduced Dale and I, right after the Rat Fink Reunion, four and a half years ago. There is a fun, railroad-themed place here in Salt Lake City, on State Street, called the Train Shoppe. Not only is a store for model railroaders, selling everything railroad imaginable... But a fun railroad-themed venue for children's birthday parties, and adults who wanted to ride a 7 and 1/2 gage train! Dale was doing a weekly Toy Man on the Train Shoppe... Al appeared in the video, riding the train, and shooting a toy cap gun at targets. This looked like a whole lot of fun! I met Al again, in person, at Dale's studio here in Salt Lake City. I remember saying, " I know you! I saw you riding a train, and shooting a cap gun!!" This caused Al to really laugh! Back then, I was making it a habit to visit Salt Lake City (West Jordan) on a weekend basis.. as I had just became a grandma for the first time! I also would "hang-out" with Dale, have lunch, and would often stop by at Steve's to see the wonderful model train layout that he and Al were working on. These guys were a hoot... Always up to something on the railroad! Of course.. being somewhat of a rail-fan myself, it wasn't long before I was offering my 2 cents worth of information as well.. often bantering with Al over some small detail, and teasing him that I could bring my dollies and put them around the layout! Never a dull moment! Times were fun, and the coffee was great! Dale and I officially became a "couple" during the making/ videoing of "Halloween Special. Smashing Pumpkins". It was both Steve and Al who put us onto the giant pumpkin patch! We all went out to supper, where I was introduced to the rest of the group.. And we have been dining all together ever since! Al has been ever present in our lives. His energy and quick wit will be sorely missed. His talent for being able to build trains, cars, buildings with full interiors, and pine trees will be equally missed.. and the items in which he created, treasured forever. Al was a musician and teacher. He played clarinet and saxophone. Al was always in a hurry.. Often getting after us for not being productive, or completing a project.. but then laughing.. Al was an excellent cook. We will miss having dinner at Steve's, and watching football or Big Bang Theory on TV. Al was always on-the-go.. But would often take a quick cat-nap in a chair, and as soon as he recharged, he was awake, whistling, and busy! For reasons unknown... Al left this world, much in the way he lived in it.. The obscure message to always live life to the fullest. I'm sure that there will be other messages for us to discover as time passes. Today, I take a deep breath... and feel so privileged to have met such a wonderful person.

Toy Man, this is my first time hearing about the gentleman and now I wish I had known more and followed his modeling. What you showed in the video of his work is beyond "Craftsman" quality, it's truly "Museum Quality" building! From the tone in your voice you guys had a great relationship over a number of years, and that's what I have enjoyed about this hobby, seemingly no one looks at your economic status, the color of your skin or what area of the country/planet you come from we all have that one single love and that's "The Love of Trains" and this wonderful hobby. This was great tribute not just to Al. but to everyone that was a friend and for those of us who did not know him. It really speaks about our Humanity towards each other. Thank you for this video and for all you do for us modelers and this wonderful hobby of our!! David Muse

Never met the chap but you know someone by their deeds. Learning about Al through this series was a treat. He was just a name on a Model in the pages of Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette when The editor, Bob Brown and Charlie Getz would cover the conventions. Drives home your theme, Toy Man, to continue "The High Art of Screwing Around". Al's passing came as a shock. Greg and Jeanne.

Thanks for the window into your life, Dale and Karyn. Sad to hear this news. 68 is too young. At least he died in his sleep. I"m 70 and trying to complete many things I've wanted to do, just like you. Al left many beautiful models to the world, and beautiful friendships, leaving it better off than when he came in. Got to give him credit. What more can anyone do? God bless!

Very sad that Al passed away. I discovered the channel with the pine trees of Al. He wrote me a full description of his method when I bought the DVD about his pine trees via Dale. Thanks to him, I was able to make six fine pine trees on my o scale layout. For all that, thank you Al. Dale, I hope that you will still make a show about theses scratch built cars, even if he couldn't make one hundred. The progress shots of the last one look amazing.

You are so correct about doing things instead of waiting because now I had to put my wife in a nursing home because she was falling a lot and I couldn't pick her up or was hurting myself to do so. We were married on 5/22/1971 by her dad. We celebrated out 40th anniversary by riding Amtrak round trip from Mineola, TX to San Antonio, TX in May 2011 which happened to be Amtrak's 40th anniversary. We celebrated our 47th anniversary by me driving her in the car to DQ and getting a mint, chocolate chip blizzard. We did a lot of things together and with the children. Going quick is a whole lot better than being drug out by sickness and alzheimers . Enjoy being and doing things together.

It’s hard to carve out time for models when so many things keep taking your time. But time at the bench is the best. You can loose yourself and notice that it’s 4 in the morning. I do the same editing the shows. Just adding in shots and music. And changing stuff and adding more stuff. Every show is sorta like a model! Hum... now I wanna get back on the tin roof on the E and P #4.

I always loved Steve and Al's railroad. Always will be an inspiration for me to build my own On30 layout and just make spectacular detail all over it. I probably may never know how these guys make them scratch built, but I will give it a shot to create my own imagination in reality like they did. For AL, rest in peace. I hope to complete my railroad with the money I will save over the years and still be young enough to fully enjoy modeling and finishing it before I even retire. He and Steve really got my spark into doing model railroading again since I was a kid, and also my love for narrow guage equipment.

Al really had some talent. But mostly he just was always modeling. Like 10 hours a day 365 per year. It was second nature to him. Knocking out trees all day and all night. Up at 4 am building. Never had a full time job, taught music. So off to the studio for a few hours to teach for a few hours, home to work on his project, back to the studio for an hour with a stop at the hobby shop on his way home. Slept in shifts. Didn't own a bed!!!! Just slept in a chair for a few hours and back to his model. No wonder he build so many models. Posted child for ADD and OCD. AMAZING MAN.

After Al died Steve started a brass 2-4-4-2 to sort of work through the feelings. And here we are less than 2 weeks later and it’s almost done! And it’s amazing. Needs to be a show!!!!

My sincere condolences on the loss of both your friends and thanks for your sharing your philosophy and how these moments shape your life. I think you couldn't have put together a more fitting tribute to either of them. Thank you also for sharing Al's wonderful modeling. If I were ever to get serious about modeling myself he does something that I appreciate and would want to do myself. His models are frequently as detailed on the inside as they are on the out, whether or not they will be seen by anyone, and I really like the thought of taking that kind of time and going to that type of effort. Thank you again, for the reminder that life is a terminal condition and that we have a limited amount of time to make the best of it, whatever that best may be.

Sorry for the loss of your friends here on earth at such a young ages. But their memory and work shall never pass away. It's the legacy we leave behind us is what we spend a life time making... Praying for comfort to the hearts of all... God sets our time to be born and our time to leave this old earth. It's up to us to fill the space in between how we choose... BBE

I've never met the man. I only know about him through your channel. yet my heart is very heavy because for the reasons of his personalily, skill set and your close relationship. I can see your pain and it makes my heart ache too. It took me two tries just to watch these episodes. All I can say is: "Thank you for everything"

OH NO! My heart sank to the floor when I read the title. Appropriately, it is raining here. Too young! Too Soon! A very fitting tribute and celebration of Al's life! I am so very sorry at the loss of yours, Steve's, Karyn's, and others close friend, Al. I am sure it is a loss like loosing a close family member. I know a hole is there, and will remain. Your mother was so right, as you affirm. The real "pain" of getting older, is the loss of those you hold the nearest and dearest, in your heart. All those that make and made, living here on earth, a home.

Thanks for the very kind words. Times like these leave us wondering what life is all about with no answers. The questions are the answers. Often the questions of what is real in life are obscured by the "answers". And suddenly you become aware of that....

Thanks! This is where life takes us all. Being the last person standing is said to be the goal. Not sure it should be, but really sure we have no control over it and thank God for that. I have a hard time being responsible for paying the bills. I'l leave the power of life and death somewhere else.

That’s so sad a very talented man died like that and only at 68. I had a grandfather who also had a model train set in his garage and I used to play with it all the time and a train that ran around his Christmas tree. If he hadn’t died 7 years ago, he’d still be running those train sets.

Very sorry for your loss.last Aug!Al sounds like the kind of GentleMan you don't have the privelege of bumping into a lifetime or two!You two have been my Favorites over the last few months, and I have noticed you chalk up allot of windshield time while Screwing around constantly. That said,Please be aware of the others screwing around in your travels that aren't as responsible as we would like all to be! It would sadden me deeply without Toyman to make me chukle. Thank you for the smiles Warmest regards, Don Mohler.

I was introduced to your sight a couple of years ago by a friend. Although I am not a devote railroader, more of a slot racer but love your folksy weekly story. I have so admired the modelling skills and especially the work of Al you showcased. I feel like I lost a friend. I fell so sad. Thank you for sharing. Condolences and thanks for the advice at the end of the video. Please do keep on screwing around.

Thanks... Al had many talents.. He was also an excellent musician, playing clarinet, and saxophone. He was also a music teacher, and a wonderful cook! Whatever he did... he did it "well"......... Not good......... But well! If one had talent in an area... They never did good.. They did it well! One of his grammar lessons we all absorbed! LOL! Al loved Toy Man, and being part of the show!

What a moving tribute to such an amazing man! Your words truly captured how Al's passionate dedication to the hobby inspired so many other people. Al has gone to a better place now to take his rightful role in that great roundhouse in the sky. Likewise, Glynn suffers no longer and also has been embraced by the loving, welcoming arms of our Creator. God bless you both, Dale and Karyn, for bringing this beautiful memorial to RU-vid. Our tears last but for a short while and are necessary to grieve our loss, but our cherished memories last forever and bring us heartfelt joy and profound appreciation for years to come. -from Tom Pilling
