Michael Irvin relives hearing the news that Jimmy Johnson was leaving the Dallas Cowboys, and shares the emotions he was going through at the time. #Undeniable #NFL #Cowboys
Jerry unfortunately couldn’t handle that Jimmy was getting all the credit for the team becoming so successful. He couldn’t accept it, and he couldn’t appreciate that as an owner he did exactly what he needed to do in order to make them successful by hiring Jimmy and letting him do it his way. One thing I learned as a parent is when my kids turned into adults, I just had to get out of their way. If Jerry had been able to just step back, be the owner, enjoy the success, insured Jimmy had all he needed, he’d probably be considered the greatest team owner of all time. Instead, he’s known as the owner who destroyed a dynasty and is responsible for every failure since.
Jerry Jones getting rid of Jimmy Johnson was one of the worst ownership decisions in the history of sports. All because of Jerry's ego and micromanaging, he gets rid of a guy who just won back to back Super Bowl titles, who could have won at least 2-3 MORE had he stayed. Jerry needs to let the coach, COACH. This is one reason why I believe Dallas has not been to a conference championship game or Super Bowl in 28 years.
I’m a 49ers fan. And have been saying the same thing for decades. Jerry sale tickets make money and stay out of the coaches way. Quit hiring “yes men.” I don’t know about belicheck but take a big swing for Jim harbaugh.
@@scorpionsfan8407 - I don't think Jim Harbaugh is going to want to leave Michigan for the Cowboys if he has aspirations of returning to the NFL coaching ranks. Jim Harbaugh has too much resume to end up being Jerry Jones' boot licking yes man to coach the Cowboys. I am sure Jim Harbaugh is going to want to be able to make player decisions as part of the deal to be coach. Don't think for a moment Jerry is going to give up that kind of control.
The cowboys could have over 6 Super Bowl wins if it weren’t for Jerry jones and his ego. Jimmy Johnson was a one in a million coach. Jerry jones ruined the cowboys.
I chauffeured Michael Irvin to radio stations around L.A. during his first Hall of Fame nomination. Very nice guy. He made the Hall of Fame the following year. ❤ At 6'5", he towered over me. :-D
I might not be a Dallas Cowboy fan, but I am a Michael Irving fan oh the best for that. John Mayer to all his trials and tribulations but him still being successful
@@TL2354 how bout them cowboys!!! LMFAO! You must be upset they choked today I'm assuming with your 2 cent comment? Lol! Hey I laughed my head off TWICE!!!!
jerry jones wanted to be al davis so bad. but if anything he shouldve learned from al’s mistakes. when al pushed marcus allen away we never recovered. same thing here with jerry and jimmy johnson.
I truly think Jerry played a HUGE role in Jimmy leaving. Jerry hates anyone getting extended spotlight more than him and Jimmy was becoming, in all aspects bigger. Which makes me laugh hearing different sports people talk about Belichik going to the Cowboys. I don't ever see that working because of both Jerry's and Belichiks alpha personality.
If the Cowboys fire Mike McCarthy, Jerry is going to replace him with another boot licking yes man just like Jason Garrett and pretty much everyone who has coached the Cowboys since he ran Jimmy Johnson off.
Jerry Jones is the complete opposite of original Cowboys owner Clint Murcheson. People forgot all the time that Clint Murcheson was the owner of the Cowboys until 1984 because he shut the hell up, let Tex Schramm, Gil Brandt and Tom Landrey do their jobs and enjoy the 20+ years of winning.
As an early 1990s hater of the Cowboys, they could have had the greatest run of dominance in NFL history if Jerry Jones could have kept his mouth shut and stayed out of Jimmy's way. In retrospect I have huge respect for what Jimmy built and what they accomplished.
Jerry can say all he wants about winning a championship. You got rid of the dude who was actively doing it for you but you couldnt handle HIM getting the credit (which he deserved)
50-year citizen of Steeler Nation here. No respect for Barry Switzer at all. Players get you to the playoffs, but the coaches get you to the Super Bowl. When you have a team with Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Ervin, Charles Haley, Darren Woodson, AND Deion Sanders, you are _supposed_ to be in the Super Bowl. I'm glad Playmaker admitted that Super Bowl win was more about the players' wills than the coaches' leadership. I'm sad it came against my boys, but, seriously, they were the better team that season. If Jimmy stayed, the history would be markedly different. Thank you, Jerry, for giving us almost three decades worth of jokes and laughs at your team's expense...
The 90s Dallas Cowboys could have been what the Patriots were under Brady and Belichick. If anyone could have navigated the salary cap era and kept the team competing at a high level for years, it was Jimmy Johnson. And this is coming from a 49er fan.
This is such revisionist history by Cowboy fans. Its not based in reality. The Cowboys were a great team but there is no way Aikman would have stayed healthy enough for 6 rings. It was a different NFL back then. QB's got crushed every other play. Younger and healthier teams would have emerged and knocked the Cowboys out. I was alive during this time. Went to the games when they came to California. The Raiders were in LA then. Its nonsense.
JJ knew human nature. J. Johnson a legend. Jerry can not get past his ego, he may have played some foot ball but can not get past his lack of expertise. Jerry needs to stand down yeah I know will never happen. Imagine Barry coming into that mess. Much respect.
Jerry is a grandiose narcissist and wanted all the attention and couldn’t stand being secondary behind Jimmy! Jerry lives in a false reality where he reigns superior with or without Superbowls. He really screwed the entire community of Dallas and in some ways a lot of the state of Texas because of the support they gave the Cowboys! I can’t believe the community stood behind that selfish egocentric clown for the last three decades. They should have quit supporting the team and forced the narcissist to sell it and start fresh! I had been a lifelong fan since the 1960’s until Jimmy left and I was done and wouldn’t fart in their direction as long as the narcissist owns the team!
I remember those days very well. It was the 49ers and Cowboys in the NFC title game 3 years straight. As a 9er fan I hated those Cowboys and loved seeing Jimmy Johnson leave😂😂. Its surprising looking back how that After 1996 the Cowboys run was pretty much over.
Looking back, I was absolutely MISERABLE when this happened. And I know that entire team was too, especially Mike Irvin, my all-time favorite Cowboy. He was SO PISSED. But now, I think those 3 guys - Aikman, Emmitt, & Michael - really REGRET not chasing Jimmy down, dragging him back, handcuffing Jerry to his office chair, and making them work it out to restore the relationship AND get Jimmy back to the Cowboys. When you are a player under Jimmy (& Jerry), you don't think you have that kind of power. But these guys certainly did. Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, now those guys KNOW that they probably could've intervened and corrected such a travesty. At least, that's what I keep telling myself could've happened. And, being a Celtics fan, I sure also wish that better friends could've intervened in Len Bias' fateful final night, as well. Most importantly, his young life would've continued and, selfishly, the world champ Celtics would've been even more unbeatable for the foreseeable future. These were 2 of the worst sports tragedies I remember.
Aikman didn't like Switzer from OU dayu. Aikman got hurt so Switzer had to go to the back-up. A freshman Jamelle Holliway who led OU to National Championship. So Aikman wanted to transfer. And So Switzer called Donahue at UCLA.Aikman got what he wanted and got drafted number 1. Yet all Aikman does is talk down about Switzer. There were coaches after Switzer and Aikman didn't whine about them
I was in 5th grade when they won it all in 92. Proudly wore my Cowboys jacket to school the next day, then I got to see them win two more (we don't talk about 94) until I outgrew that jacket and got a new Starter coat. Was too young to understand what Jerry was doing, but this video was fun and tough to watch at the same time.
As a Commanders fan, I was amazed and happy Jerry did this. It was one of the dumbest moves an NFL owner has ever made. Dan's move getting rid of Marty was a close second. But, Jimmy won SB. So, that makes Jerry number one.
I made a prediction years ago that under JJ Cowboys would never win another SB! After Green Bay destroyed the boys today in the playoffs, I am very confident with that prediction.
The results speak for themselves. Jerry's was/is a douche. His ego can't even fit in the state of Texas. I love seeing the Cowboy's lose and Jerry reaping what he's sown. Jimmy was the major factor in their success.
As a lifetime niner fan, when Jerry pushed Jimmy out, I knew the niners had a shot. That led to the 94 super bowl. I'm not sure that the niners get past Dallas in the NCF championship.
The guy’s respected Jimmy for putting his foot down when Jerry wanted to be buddy buddy with the team. Sadly no other coach has gotten that respect from the locker room since because they know he’s just Jerry’s puppet.
The problem with Jerry Jones is that he has a major ego problem. Jerry Jones wants to win, but he wants to win AND get all the credit when the Cowboys do. There is no room on the Cowboys for Jerry Jones and a strong head coach like Jimmy Johnson. Everyone talks about Mike McCarthy potentially getting the axe. I say firing Mike McCarthy wouldn't matter because Jerry Jones will just replace him with another boot licking yes man like him, Jason Garrett and pretty much everyone who has coached the Cowboys since Jimmy Johnson left. A real head coach with resume is going to want to have major say in the people and players they bring in. Something Jerry Jones WILL NEVER cede to.
Jerry Jones pushing Jimmy Johnson out is right up there with Jerry Reinsdorf pushing Michael Jordan out of Chicago as far the stupidest front office moves in sprots history.
Small correction to Michael, that 2nd turnover in the first quarter wasnt Emmitt, it was him. Then after the Niners scored to make it 14-0, the backup running back Kevin Williams returned the kickoff and fumbled that. Niners then scored to make it 21-0. Aikman threw 3 picks, Irvin fumbled, Williams fumbled for 5 turnovers. The Cowboys lost 38-28 and outgained the Niners 450-300. Turnovers definitely is why they lost, he is right. Irvin had a huge game. 12 catches 192 yards 2 TDs
I always felt like Barry was put into the biggest no win spot a coach of any sport was ever put in if he won it wasn't gonna be because of him and if he didn't wtf you couldn't get it done with a loaded team Jerry fucked up running Jimmy out but I'm with Michael I'm glad he got a ring too
Jerry just has to have his yes men. Jason Garret NEVER should have lasted as long as he did. He got rid of two hall of fame coaches in Jimmy and Parcells. Who does that?
As a Fan who had to live with Dan Snyder for over 20 years . Cowboys Fans I FEEL YOU'RE PAIN...One word to explain both owners EGO !!! Jimmy Johnson would have more SB Rings than Bill.Belichick BUT Jerry fired Jimmy because he was disrespectful to JERRY in a press conference .. Stuipid.
Jerry Jones made the Cowboys about himself. When Jimmy Johnson left,he took what last little bit of class the Cowboys organization had with him. This is why we hate the Dallas Cowboys and their fans. Realize,it's not even your team anymore. It's Jerry Jones' team, and has been since 1996
It’s easier to speak of their egos. Remember, ego means self. We were just like Mike. Jerry could have taken one (lose an argument) for the team. He didn’t and has to regret that to this day. He has to regret missing out on 3 more trophies. Let’s hope it’s like the Red Sox, reversing the curse, with Jimmy in the Ring. We haven’t lost anything, even a penalty call, since 12/30/23 when Jimmy was brought in. I’m hanging my hopes on that.
now u know how 80s bears fans felt when Buddy Ryan announced he was out the day of the super bowl.... yall kept your qb and team in tact a lil longer too! im tellin ya the 80s bears defense with walter mf payton was a dynasty with a qb1
Jerry's ego is why Jimmy left and why they couldn't continue to work together - they could have probably won more rings, but power and recognition was more important to Jerry - even today he doesn't know when to back off and let his staff do what they are hired for - he is the worst kind of owner.
First time ever! Michael said something I agreed on Never should have gotten rid of Jimmy Johnson! the rest of what he say's is B.S.! NOT only AMERICAS TEAM, WE ALL ARE, WAKE UP!
What can I say that hasn't been said already about Jerry Jones. Well I can tell you that hiring Jimmy helped me to forgive what he did to Coach Landry because I'd been a big fan of Coach Johnson and the Miami Hurricanes in the 1980s. I can tell you that winning those Super Bowls helped with forgiveness as well because even though I hated Switzer even when he was at OK, and even though I was dismayed to hear THAT was who Jerry was bringing into to replace the two legends he ran out of Dallas that last Super Bowl bought Jerry another 5 years of grace from me. But by the end of the century all the resentment and the anger I had at him for what he had done to the team and it's legacy that I had grown up with was back and I was done being somebody that lived, ate and breathed Cowboy football during the season. Oh I still pull for them, still hope for the best, but deep in my heart I know that Jerry has cursed this team and we the fans have cursed ourselves because we wanted Coach Landry run out of town on a rail at the end of his career. Well that's what we got and a few short years of success with Jimmy Johnson doesn't begin to compensate for nearly 3 decades of frustration that came afterwards. It made me realize that now I know how Green Bay fans felt after Lombardi was gone through all those years of the 70s and 80s and how Cleveland Browns fans must feel after the Era of Jim Brown and Otto Graham. All of the success those teams had before I was born I can't really connect to through highlight reels and interviews and I don't suppose young fans today can connect to how special the Cowboys teams were when I was growing up and I was a young adult. And I guess all of that is truly gone forever...
I almost know for a fact that Jerry is doing a lot of reflecting right now and regretting more and more letting him go every year they don’t win it all .
@@andrewgundy3045 and that's why he will never win another one because since Jimmy left they won one more with Barry but it was Jimmy team. Just because he is a great marketer doesn't make him a good owner he just finds people with false hope.
@@anthonyburton4691 Bucs fan here in the northwest. Give Switzer some credit he still had to coach the team. I here the same thing about Tony Dungy Jon Gruden all the time comments. Gruden won it with Dungy's team. Well then why didn't Dungy win it with Dungy's team then?!?!
Jerry Jones is a curse. It's about him. Not about winning. He THINKS he wants to win, but he won't do what's necessary to win. I've been a Cowboys fan my whole life, 38 years, and I believe this organization will not make a deep playoff run until he's dead or sells the team.
Great interview very true. Jimmy would have won four more bowl games. Jerry just cant stay on his lane. BARRY came in under Jimmy's team sure Barry won. Jimmy still could take over the team today and we could be in yet another super bowl. Yet Jerry will never let Jimmy back in the organization which really sad
Jerry chose money and to be the power in the NFL over Super Bowls. Those buddies he wanted around, that control to show up his team however he sees fit helped him accomplish that. But he has it now - for better part of a decade plus. Yet he still can’t let go
