It was so tragic, but this family had their faith and love to be with their son in the loss of their daughter. I would be surprised if the background in this music video isn't Stephen dancing with his three oldest girls.
The song was dedicated to his oldest daughter who was due to be married, but his two youngest daughters were the inspiration when he was writing it. 5 Months later his daughter Maria Sue slipped under the tire of the family SUV driven by her brother Will. She was running to him to ask him to lift her onto the monkey bars and slipped. Will was close to his younger sisters and it had taken years for him to forgive himself. Steven Curtis Chapman vowed to never sing the song again. Several years later during a concert at a State Fair (Minnesota if I remember correctly) Steven Curtis Chapman sang Cinderella for the first time in many years. He changed the final line from "She will be gone" to "The dance will go on." After the accident the Chapman family surrounded Will with love and protected him. They never once blamed him for the accident.
I get chills and weep every time I hear this song. My biological dad isn’t a good man and I don’t have any contact with him anymore. However, my stepdad is the best man I’ve ever known, and he’s stepped up and raised me when he didn’t have to. He was the man of the family when he didn’t have to be. I’m so thankful for him. I feel like I can relate to this song because even though he wasn’t here from day one, he came into my life and helped me grow at a very pivotal point in my life.

I'm an old man of 72, retired. This is my reflection time. This song reminds me, painfully how quickly childhood passes. 18 years they say, but that 18 years passes by in 18 seconds. Sometime we get so wrapped up in providing the material things for our children that we forget that love is in the relationship, in the time we spend with them, supporting them and encouraging them in the things that matter to them. Luckily I have a grand daughter who just turned 21 this years who still brings boyfriend to me for my approval. She doesn't have to. I think she is just trying to make this old man feel useful again. For you young fathers and mothers, relish changing diapers. Relish crayon art on your walls, relish taking them to their activities and participating, because tomorrow all of that will be gone. Billy, we first saw him sing this song at Disney World. Not only was she run over, but it was a tragic event where her big brother was the one who ran over her. Then my niece used this song at her wedding for the dance and her dad was dying of cancer and died about a year later. Have you ever watched the song Greater by Mercy me or A Million Lights by Michael W Smith? They are very fun and uplifting! You keep being you my friend!
Chapman changed the last line after Maria died to: "the clock will strike midnight, but I know … the truth is … the dance will go on.” to reflect the sure hope of seeing Maria in heaven.
Oh, this one kind of hit me hard. Years ago in my freshman year of college my two best friends and I were just hanging out in my dorm and we got on the subject of weddings and our ideas for that special day. This was Kellie's song for her father/daughter dance and it strikes me now how we never think things will go wrong. The year after graduation her dad was diagnosed with brain cancer and it took him in less six months. I met this man only twice in person but his daughter is my best friend and my heart shattered at just the thought of how she felt. We're both daddy's girls and just the idea of my dad not being here brings tears to my eyes.
Another couple of his songs are "Fingerprints of God"- I sang this to my daughter when she was young. Also the is "Be Still"- which always soothes me when it seems things are way more than I can handle.

Honestly the first time I ever heard this song I was on my way home and this came up on the radio and I cried all the way home. I’m close to my father but he’s been in and out of jail and prison most of my life. It reminds me of all of the times he missed watching us grow up. I never got those special moments and it kinda feels empty sometimes
I have 3 kids. 2 boys (24 and 21), and my baby girl, who just turned 16. Currently they all live at home, but with each passing day, I know we are one step closer, to the day that none of them will live here anymore. I was lucky enough to be a stay at home mom, and have poured myself, into my family. I know they must move on, and build their own lives, but it's just killing me, every time I think about it.
This got me emotional too. I used to dance with my girls when they were little. Especially to Brown Eyed Girl , they were my two brown eyed girls and I would hold my baby girl and spin the middle one around. We had so much fun and laughed so much. Girls will always be daddy's girls but they are different with mom's. Have to spread their wings a while and try to prove mom wrong about a lot of things. I miss my babies!! 😢😢😢 Here's the bad news so you can mentally prep. You will NEVER be ready to give her away. Never. 💕

15 years ago (or so) I DJed a fund-raiser/Father-Daughter Dance for a friend at her church. $$$ for a Youth Group Building. It turned into three Father-Daughter Dances over the years. This was the Theme Song. It was such a blessing to see fathers and daughters dancing together.

I was on my high school dance team over 10 years ago, and he was at every football game, every competition, every show supporting me (along with my mom 💜). He made me a studio in our garage so I could dance when I got out of school. My team actually danced to this song my junior year. Sometime after he wrote the song, One of their precious little adopted girls died in a terrible accident right in their driveway. For all of us who has known Steven Curtis Chapman and his music, That was very crushing for all of us. Our hearts ached for him and his family. And now I know how it feels as we lost our daughter a year ago February.
I cry every time I hear the song. For me I cry because my dad died when I was 16 and now I'm a mother of two and I get sad when I think about all of the things that my kids are going to miss out because of his death.
I didn't know if you knew but this is for his past away daughter. On May 21, 2008, 5-year-old Maria Sue Chapman was accidentally hit by Chapman's son, Will Franklin, after she ran into the path of his SUV in their driveway. Maria later died at a Nashville hospital.
Some people have described what happened and the stuff behind this song but they left out some details he wrote the song for his oldest daughter who was getting married salt in between these events his youngest daughter was stuck and killed by a vehicle sadly it was her older brother who was backing out of the driveway who was driving the car and couldn't see her behind it. He ran when he realized what he'd done and another man that was there and had dinner a similar thing with his younger sibling chased him down and literally tackled him cause understandably everyone else was worrying about the baby girl he knew that young man would need some comfort of his own it's a traffic hope filled story of true family love
hardest thing for a dad is at the wedding and giving his baby girl up to another man to be married having that Father daughter dance is one of the hardest times for a Father to go through because no matter what the Father is always the first love of a woman
This is so very true . I can remember when my baby girl was born. The next thing I knew my husband was giving her away. Then I was there when my baby girl had her baby girl talk about a Motional that was a getter for me. She worked so hard to get her into this world.

My daughter is 32 and these songs kill me. My 5 year old granddaughter was dancing and twirling in a flighty dress while we were watching The Lorax a year ago. Talk about a great big smile on my heart! One chapter is nearing a close brother, but a new one is just around the corner. But not too soon darling. 😡😉😎
It's sadder still this song because his little girl died in the accident his son caused which was a horrific accident that he himself took hard. The whole thing is very sad.
