+Keyser Soze Spielberg considered Kubrick to be his idol but it's Welles who has inspired him the most. There are several shots in Spielberg's films which remind you of Welles' cinematography in Citizen Kane & The Magnificent Ambersons.

@@MrAkashvj96 I'd say that apart from Welles; Billy Wilder, John Ford, Howard Hawks and Frank Capra are much bigger influences on Spielberg than Kubrick. Apart from obviously "A.I." and aspects of "Minority Report" there's barely anything Kubrick in the rest of the Spielberg's filmography which is very Hollywood 'Americana.' While Kubrick's style and approach was very European.

im proud to say that Citizen Kane is one of my favorite movies. i love the angles Welles used to display certain character emotions, i love those tiny bits of dialogue that still stick with you ("You buy a bag of peanuts in this town and you get a song about you"), the performances, the lighting, everything seems so perfect.

Many great scenes, fantastic dialogue throughout, but I often go back to the scene where Mr Bernstein recalls the beautiful young woman on the ferry. And his remark "it's no trick to make a lot of money-- if all you want is to make a lot of money."

Anything that is popular and acclaimed is labelled as overrated. I swear people only do it for the sake of being "different." It's the same with people who say The Beatles were overrated. Haven't they considered that maybe the acclaim for CK and The Beatles is deserved.
@KesserCFC4eva
@KesserCFC4eva 12 лет назад
@samsam29 Most of it's acclaim, you have to understand, is not necessarily for it's story or for other similar things like the acting. It was innovative, certain things about it such as the narrative non-linear format, the whole idea of flashbacks though interviews, the long final shot of the movie and things like that were new back then, it was different. And I think that's what Steven Spielberg is talking about here.

Spielberg's praise is nice but he will never understand the toil Welles had to go through after he brought Citizen Kane (1941) to life, dealing with Hearst's finest. The followup in 1942 with The Magnificent Ambersons and the unfinished It's All True was a cruel joke on the part of RKO, hacking the first picture and pulling funding on the next, basically forcing Welles into the world of independent filmmaking. The Stranger (1946), The Lady from Shanghai (1947) and Touch of Evil (1958) are fantastic films too, but on each, Welles was only allowed to go so far before the studio came in and shut the door on him in the post-production.

There is Kane, then there's everything else. The characters are iconic and aloof, the story is fraught with mystery and strangeness (like Welles himself), and everything that could ever be done in a movie, past, present and future was done in Kane. The film is the greatest of all time, made by the most brilliant writer/director/actor of all time. I still get chills every time I see it.

This is an example of herd-mentality. The slavish reverence for Citizen Kane reflects no critical thinking. Watch the distinguished Robert McKee deliver a damning, contemptuous analysis of Citizen Kane: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fqPr-JMxDQI.htmlsi=LtOLjKVDy2_ywuFZ Among other things, Kane was a shameless hatchet-job, the product of a smug, juvenile mind. This hatchet-job did even more harm to Marion Davies than it did to Hearst, and Hearst was well-justified in his outrage. Those who admire Kane should ask themselves whether they have suckered for the manipulations of a smug, juvenile mind, or, at the very least, should educate themselves regarding Hearst and Marion Davies, who in no way resembled Charles Foster Kane and Susan Kane. Orson Welles does not deserve respect. It's all Emperor's New Clothes.

from our point of view maybe you're right, but back then nobody made pictures liked that. Welles introduced with Citizen Kane so many technics, things that all today's director do. Without him and this movie there wouldn't be a modern cinema, and that's why it's considered the greatest movie of all time.

I thought the film was boring. It didn't hold my attention at all. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. For entertainment value (which is the primary reason anyone watches a film) modern day cinema is vastly superior in every respect.
@Em-Bee
@Em-Bee 9 лет назад
***** Who are you to tell me that my response is 'wrong'. It's my opinion and therefore cannot be wrong.
@Em-Bee
@Em-Bee 9 лет назад
***** fine. 99.99999% of people see entertainment value as the primary motivation for watching a movie. But I never said anything about people 'solely' watching a movie for entertainment value. I've personally enjoyed watching some harrowing and thought provoking documentaries and I've educated myself in the process. Had I not found the movie engaging and ultimately 'entertaining' I would not have continued watching. I'm also interested to know what you think you can gauge about me from my two sentence comment, other than the fact that I found Citizen Kane boring?
@Em-Bee
@Em-Bee 9 лет назад
***** Oh boy, there is so much wrong with your response. Of course I can choose to recommend a film or not. It's a recommendation based on my own personal experience. Not recommending something is not the same as recommending that someone does not watch it. I watched Citizen Kane because I consider myself to be a fan of film - and I hated it. I have every right to my own opinion, as do you. Just because we share a difference of opinion does not make my comment ignorant. If I hadn't watched the movie and said something like, 'I'm not going to watch it because it's black and white', feel free to label me ignorant. But I was commenting after having watched the movie, so was speaking from an educated position. Therefore my opinion is valid.
@Em-Bee
@Em-Bee 9 лет назад
***** Read my comment again. I said 'I thought the film was boring' not 'The film is boring'. That clearly signifies that this is my personal opinion. Whether or not the film has a fanbase is completely irrelevant when expressing my opinion and the film's impact on modern cinema or it's influence on modern directors (which I'm not denying) is completely irrelevant when discussing my opinion of it as an entertainment tool - which I was. I do think that modern cinema offers vastly superior entertainment value. Of course it's aided by vastly superior technology but as an overall experience modern cinema can offer things that Citizen Kane could never hope to.
@Em-Bee
@Em-Bee 9 лет назад
***** I didn't say it has no value. I'm sure that people interested in, or studying the history of film making would find it interesting. Maybe I should have written 'I don't know anyone that I would recommend it to' but it's true that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone for reasons other than film education. But you're also generalising by saying that the majority of people enjoy it, without foundation for your comment. Critics may like it, but the general public rarely agree with the critics. I'd be very confident that, if we were to take a cross section of today's society, the majority of people would rate it poorly. As to what about the film I disliked, I honestly can't remember much about it now. It's been almost month since I watched it and it was instantly forgettable. All I remember are my feelings after watching it, which were that it was boring and did not justify the hype.
