I knew Steven back in in 1983 when I worked at the Hit Factory NYC. I was the front desk reception girl. It was great job. My name is Tammy and Steve would come for session singing, Tammy how I love you, my dear young Tammy. He was sincere and charming. He looks the same today as he did then! He has taken good care of himself, that makes me so happy to see.

So a few years ago, myself and my best mate from back home in Oz meet up in San Sebastion (Spain) with our wives and we decide to stay at the best hotel we could afford. Turns out it was the Hotel Maria Cristina, a beautiful old hotel. My mate & I walk in and we’re literally just a couple of Oz surfers on tour and when we walk into the hotel reception on the way to the bar, there’s Steven and Tom Waits sitting on a couch, just chilling and shooting the breeze. We said g’day to them and Steve just said, how ya doin boys? We said fine, on our way to the bar and he replied “ that is the place boys”, gave us a wink and we had a laugh and then had a few bevvies in the bar with our wives. Epic little encounter. And clearly, Steve is still as real and absolutely genuine a person as he was all those years ago. A true legend.

@@lucydayLucida Zero diss. Bruce was not diminishing Steve's other accomplishments. Springsteen is simply saying that in a world of "straight" expectations -- go to school, get a steady job, buy a house in the suburbs, etc. -- music is all they had and all they strove for, and it's all that they could really do. Certainly not go to college, certainly not work at the factory. All else they achieved was made possible because of the music.

The first two Disciples of Soul records are fabulous. Underground Garage is eye-opening and super entertaining. Saw him with Springsteen back in the day and he was tremendous and essential. Still got a sparkle in his eye. Cool cat.

I like him as well. Excellent interview. Still was it just me or did he appear to lose his balance when Bruce walked right up and stood in front of him and started to chat? 😶‍🌫

Don’t forget his relationship with Southside Johnny! Steve wrote “I don’t wanna go home” my favorite Jersey Shore song!

Yes! Every time I hear a Southside Johnny track that really rocks, or that sounds like a soul/R&B classic that I have never heard before, I look at the credits, and sure enough, it's a Steve Van Zandt composition. "Sweeter Then Honey"..."This Time It's for Real"... fantastic stuff!

Love those classic Disciples Of Soul albums from the '80s, saw their Rockpalast show in '84 in Germany.

I'm amazed that Musicians like Steve can do so much, without reading music. It sounds like he's an amazing musical version of a script doctor.
