Some GoPro cameras captured SW, the band and Ninet Tayeb performing Space Oddity at the Hammersmith Apollo last week (27th Jan) as a tribute to the late David Bowie. Thanks to Lasse for editing it together.
I was a teenager in the 70 - we had a gas. Tons of good bands, tons of it. pop, rock, hard rock, glamour rock, progrock- it was much more diverse than nowadays, where it is all beats. No melodies anymore. Wilson is an exeption. Watch the series "LIve on Mars" and you get a glimpse of it. Or even better the movie "Velvet Goldmine".
*In the song "Lazarus" (2005) by Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson sings: "My David, don’t you worry / This cold world is not for you / So rest your head upon me / I have strength to carry you…" Like if Wilson was sending a message of comfort to Bowie eleven years before his farewell song: "Lazarus" (2016). Life is so mysterious sometimes… RIP Great David Bowie.
I saw SW in Berlin eight day's after David passed away. It was a very sad memory and Steven heal all our feeling with performing space oddity !!! On the screen was David in an space suit, unforgettable RIP David Bowie our hero here in Berlin ❤️
A beautiful tribute to David Bowie, and an awesome live performance. Your show in Paris was outstanding and I'll love to see videos from this amazing night.
THANK YOU STEVEN 4 YOUR AWESOME MUSIC! IT HELPS ME THROUGH A HARD TIME IN MY LIFE!!!! THANK YOU!!!! SO MUCH!!!! I LOVE YOUR MUSIC!!! BLACKFIELD......PORCUPINE TREE.....OR YOU SOLO!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Should've played Lazarus also (by Porcupine Tree) "my David don't you worry this cold world is not for you" would've set everyone to crying reaaaal quick
Beautiful. Wonderful. A fitting, perfect tribute, much better by miles than you'll see on the Grammys (if you actually waste your time watching awards shows).
+Bryan8329 Well, in fairness...you are probably right. I definitely will watch her Bowie tribute on YT the morning after the Grammys. As for the rest of the show, well...not so much. Heh. Cheers.
Hmm. Well...I didn't like LG's tribute all that much. Basically because she tried to cram 10+ songs into 5 minutes. It came off as a Vegas variety act paired with an Intel commercial. But, her opening, singing "Space Oddity," left no doubt that she's got the vocal goods to do Bowie justice. She just should have covered that song in its entirety -- it would have been far more effective IMO.
+MrDunedon the one crucial thing american shows have is subtlety. everything have to be loud bright shiny and extravagant it's the opposite of Steven Wilson
Archontasius Heh, well...I will say this: American shows are tame, quiet and reserved compared to many of the productions I've seen out of Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. ;-) In any event, yeah, I get what you are saying. It's a shame, because the music *should* be allowed to speak for itself.
I'm quite new to the marvellous talents of Steven Wilson, and other songs of his have reduced me to tears, but nothing prepared for this beauty. Oh boy.
If I could "like" this every time I've watched it, it would be over a million likes by now. Brilliant rendition, gorgeous harmonies (naturally), and maybe the most delicious electric guitar tone (and tasteful playing) I've ever heard.
