New 2 disc set from Steven Wilson featuring unreleased tracks, videos, live recordings and high-resolution audio -- available on Blu-ray & CD and CD & DVD
OUT NOW!
In February 2013 Steven Wilson released 'The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories)', his third solo album. The album was a huge critical and commercial success, earning numerous 5 star reviews and charting well across the world, debuting at #3 in the German national chart, #28 in the UK top 40, #57 in the US Billboard top 200, #16 in Holland and #17 in Finland.
Prior to these dates, Drive Home, a new audio-visual package will be released as a Blu-ray & CD set and as a CD & DVD set.
The Blu-ray and DVD feature the new video for lead track 'Drive Home' along with the video for 'The Raven That Refused To Sing', both directed by Jess Cope. They also include four tracks recorded live in Frankfurt during the recent tour.
In addition, the Blu-ray and DVD feature audio recordings of two previously unreleased tracks, 'The Birthday Party' and an orchestral version of 'The Raven That Refused To Sing'. 'The Birthday Party' was recorded in LA at the same sessions as the tracks that made up the album while the version of 'The Raven That Refused To Sing' is a new mix that strips the track back to just the orchestra and vocals.
All the songs on the Blu-Ray and DVD are mixed in both stereo and 5.1 sound, including the two audio only titles. The audio on the Blu-Ray is full lossless 96/24 throughout. These tracks are also included on the CD, along with the audio from the live tracks and an edit of 'Drive Home'.

In Steven Wilson's own words: “It’s a very simple song, again about loss and mortality. I think it would be hard for anyone to write about mortality without it being, to some degree, personal. “Whether we like to admit it to ourselves or not, we’re all obsessed with mortality. And we should be, because we know that one day we’re going to cease to exist. We’re going to die. It’s the one thing that all human beings have in common. And possibly, we are the only species on earth that are aware of our own impending mortality. That’s such a heavy burden to carry around with you; it does affect everything in life. “It’s about an old man at the end of his life who is waiting to die. He thinks back to a time in his childhood when he was incredibly close to his older sister. She was everything to him, and he was everything to her. Unfortunately, she died when they were both very young. This is not autobiographical; it’s fiction in that respect. But the guy is now at the end of his life, and he’s never been able to form any other kind of relationships. He’s spent his entire life alone, unable to relate to any other human beings. “A raven begins to visit this man’s garden, and the raven begins to represent a symbol or a manifestation of his sister. The thing is, his sister would sing to him whenever he was afraid or insecure, and it was a calming influence on him. In his ignorance, he decides that if he can get the raven to sing to him, it will be the final proof that this is, in fact, his sister who has come back to take him with her to the next life. “One of the things about my lyrics is, I try to be simple. I do it with the music, too. I don’t like things to be complex, intellectual or obtuse just for the sake of it. I love the simplicity of certain phrases. What’s special about being to say ‘I love you,’ but in a new way… it’s so hard to do that. They’re such cliché's, in a way. Being afraid to love someone, being in love with someone… if you can find a way to make these things sound fresh again, that’s a really special thing to do. “The one worry I had with all of the guys but particularly with Guthrie, my new guitar player - because Guthrie is such an extraordinary guitar player; he’s one of these guys who can shred and play a lot of notes. He can wipe the floor with so many guys. I turned to him with this song and said, ‘Are you OK with this? I’m only asking you to play two or three notes.’ I thought it might be dull for him. And he said, ‘No, I love doing it, because they’re the right three notes, and it’s the right thing to play for the song.’ That, to me, was a very profound thing for him to say. “If you give people something where the simplicity is the way to go, and it’s all about the feeling… It’s about breaking your heart with one note rather than appealing to your intellect with a thousand notes. They love it! Guthrie was having a great time playing these notes, because he felt that it was the right thing for this piece of music. “The biggest thing is to make people feel. It’s easy to appeal to the intellect. I could go and write some silly, complicated shit, but the hardest thing is to hit somebody’s heart and soul. I want spirituality rather than technicality.”

Comment of the century. I feel so blessed to be alive during his musical prime. This guy holds my heart in his hand - in Storm Corrosion he makes me feel horror, in Porcupine Tree he makes me feel (quite a variety of things really), and in this song he completely rips my heart out of my chest.

I watched several times - and then I thought "Why a Raven?" Then, it made sense. In Poe's book, the Raven said "Nevermore!". So, the man is old and his sister has been dead for many years and he is now facing his own death (presumably, old age). And, this Raven has sung to him, calmed his fears over the years, and now? It's as though the Raven can only deliver a "Nevermore" - which could mean the end is near for the old man, so the Raven won't sing - he knows. As he thinks of his own death, he ties it in with his sister's death and now this - HIS death - and the Raven will not sing to him. His end is very near - he misses the Raven as he misses his sister - now he connects his sisters death, the "Nevermore" (no singing) from the Raven, again, which he misses to calm him, but he starts to understand what is happening and says as much out loud - "I'm afraid to wake". Beautiful story, as is the symbolism of the Raven's song, his sister's death, he understands all too well - it's when this 'changes' that he now faces the unknown - his own death, which is foretold by the missing of the Raven's song. As if the Raven is saying "You can shake me, hurt me, but I can't change fate for you, don't you see?" He finally accepts this, but in all the pain, a glimmer of hope = he will, again, be with his sister. Acceptance of Death is a fight to the bitter end, then his 'will' - OUR WILL - cannot win against the inevitability of our dying. He frees the Raven, as he frees himself to the hands of death - surrender. Thus quote the Raven, "Nevermore" and his demise will reunite him with his sister - his death is very sad - but, not as sad as his older Sis leaving before him, assumed to be prematurely. The bird knows, somewhere his Sis knows, and in the end? He knows and his fears, laid before us, are now no longer, just like the song from his Raven that has ceased. Beautiful song and to touch the heart and emotions of others is truly a gift. Steven Wilson's 'soft touch' here is what is so effective and unforgettable. As Steven wrote years earlier, he states in his song that "Stars Die" and like all things in our Universe, People Die, as well. "A Masterful Composition" by an Artist who has NOT gotten all he deserves.

i find it hard not to cry listening to this.. in some kind of weird mix of joy and sadness.. and disbelief. Music is what saved my life and what keeps me going.. and Steven Wilson, for me, is the greatest musician alive. because he : Is one of the best vocalists i know, one of the most talented songwriters, one of the best guitarists and keyboard-players.. but most of all... the only Person that i completly believe what he does... i beleive 100% that he feels what he sings about... and i cant find anyone else who gives that much emotion into music... pure, honest emotion... not forced or anything... i cant find the words for this. its just magic :)

Wow it happened to me as well. The only "new artist" I discovered and moved in such a way was Pink Floyd. I put new artist in quotation because I'm 45, Pink Floyd has existed longer than I, and I discovered it when I was 15 (with the AMLoR album). The same happened to me with Steven Wilson, although I was a fan of Porcupine Tree and saw them live, I was not interested in Steven's solo work, until I heard Hand Cannot Erase and went backwards... It's the same feeling I experienced when I discovered the old Floyd albums.

I just love the comments on this. Everybody gets it! This one of the saddest, most beautiful and most heartbreaking pieces of music ever, and I'm overjoyed to know that I'm not the only person that thinks that way.

The wonderful art from Steve Wilson keeps the planet in sync. What a prolific Musician, Producer, and overall diverse song writer. The Art Of Music is still alive, you just have to dig for it. This man is on so many albums and writing daily.... He must be an alien for sure. Clone him

i think it's empowering. Having felt this in my own life. i'm sure my own interpretation of SW's may not be correct, but it is still powerful.

Seraphiel Von Einem Greatest thing about music or any art really is that no interpretation in inherently wrong or right. Once a song takes a meaning for you, it becomes that whether that was the intention or not. Even if I was to find the most beautiful message in some trashy Lil Wayne song, it would be just as valid as any other. :)

watch the video for "Piha ilman sadettajaa" by Zen Café (a Finnish band). Doesn't matter if you don't understand the lyrics; the video is incredibly depressing, as is the song.
