I was fortunate to be the recording engineer on this gig. Parked in a Dodge cube van in front of the El Mo. Used two Sound Workshop 1280b mixers feeding an Ampex MM1200 16 track 2" tape machine. It was insanely hot in the club that night. Stevie had received a bad shock at a gig on the previous night, and didn't want it to happen again, so we went down to Jacob's Hardware on Queen St W and bought some black rubber pipe insulators and wrapped them around the mic stand. That's why the stand looks large and dark. The El Mocambo has been closed for over a decade, but a local millionaire, Michael Wekerle bought the building a couple of years ago and has financed a major renovation. It's reopening when the COVID curfew ends, though we are already shooting some performances there next week with no audience for CBC-TV's Canada Day show.
Respect to you bro..... you made a legend even better. This is his best live performance. Little Wing and Texas Flood at this show was legendary. Thank you again. 🙏
Are you in Toronto? Just down the road , across the Great Lake Ontario...and on a clear day...Whatever became of The Gasworks?! We loved that place, circa 1988
I agree 💯 I don't think I've ever seen someone that can perform with so much soul it like he is an instrument himself love everything I've ever seen from him.....
The musicality of the solo is what’s super-impressive. It’s not mindless shredding or wanking for the sake of it. It moves from one rock-solid melodic idea to the next and is executed flawlessly to boot. This man was the best to ever do it.
Perfectly described 🎯👌🏾 Also, something that took me a while to realise - Tommy's bass playing is equally flawless with the same kind of seamless fluidity and story telling. Those two were definitely a match made in guitar heaven! 🎸
I love when you guys that know music and have a way to describe it so that someone like me can understand it so I just wanted to say thank you and you should comment on more videos it really helps us people who are casual music listeners...
The best about SRV is it doesnt matter if its a live recording or a record, it always sounds the same. Never heard of an artist that does that. He hits the notes with precision every time, its magic!!
Stevie was the coolest dude ever! And all without using one cuss word or dirty lyrics like some of todays music..The Cat with the Hat with the Strat💞💞💞💞
Melts me every time I listen every day to get me going there e is nothing like Stevie Ray. The house is rocking in heaven. Love to all SRV fans out there. Rock on girls and boys ❤️😺
Brian axb They were just THAT extraordinarily good! I’m 50 years old and grew up listening to the greats and no one hits me in the gut like SRV does! Just an outright mastery of that beat up strat and a consuming love for music that is infectious!
One of my favourite SRV performances. I love that this just sits in the groove and the way the guitar flirts around the beat. And IMHO this is one of the best solos. Simple(ish) but effective and perfect for the song. :-)
I was just a kid when he did this concert and barely a preteen when he passed, but He sure was a bright burning comet that went out to soon.I am a blues guitarist myself, and he is definitely one of my influences,R.I.P. S.R.V,my blues brother
The SRV setup: Very heavy & high off the frets. .013, .015, .019, .028, .038, .058. Fender Super Reverbs & '63 Vibroverbs in combination extensively. (Around '84, a 150-watt Howard Dumble.) Tuned his guitars ½-step down. Used rewound Strat pickups, Tube Screamer, Fuzz Face, Octavia, Wa, and a Vibratone.
Interesting fact, when he got clean he moved down to .011-.052 because he said without the coke/booze he could feel the pain again. Also, checkout out some of the fun things he did with super glue and baking soda.
SRV "Hug you squeeze you" live @ the El mocambo 1983, Honey, Stevie just told me to tell you get well soon. bless your heart babe I love you sweet pea.
Kia ora from New Zealand. I just wanna say...when the big G.O.D was making guitar players, he made SRV, the MAN. And Road Dogg you are absolutely right, won't be able to stop and my wife can go watch something else.
never will there ever be another to to do what stevie done.... it’s like he WAS the music effortless almost. The word legend is used to much nowadays but he seriously is an example of a legend and not only his music but the world needs more people like him you know be a lot better place ❤️ 🌍 R.I.P SRV 🎸
These small venues from before he got really famous always sound better because they were more raw, less is more and effects usually cloud true talent!!!
LMAO yeah its so easy to emulate his timing and tone. What a load of crap. Yeah may be able to find the notes/chords but emulating his feel and shuffle is extremely hard to do correctly
@@sophiawolthof1238 Thanks for the hearts. Loved STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN and DOUBLE TROUBLE, AND KEYBOARDIST.🤠💜 GREATEST BLUES SINGER EVER AND DOUBLE TROUBLE BAND.
This is the place where you come to understand why his Stratocaster looks the way it does!! That lead solo in this song is a bit unusual sounding for Stevie ... love it like the rest, though! This SM58 vocal mic sounds better than anything I've ever heard him sing into ...
Thank you, Jimmie, for allowing concert vids in addition to music vids, and studio recordings on the channel, and other platforms. You done well managing Little Brother's estate despite the nay sayers calling you out your name. . .or maybe they called you our your name because you have been so very strict and careful. Love and respect you as much as I love Stevie.

Stevie could really cut loose on rhythm guitar chops. He could blend rhythm and lead phrasing together in a very fluid way that was entertaining to listen to .
