In the 80s, I worked as a bouncer in a blues club in Memphis. My mother in law at the time came up to me and said, "I have someone who wants to meet you.". Standing in front of me was a man with wearing a poncho reaching out to shake my hand. I was star struck to be in front of one of my heroes, Stevie Ray Vaughan. A few weeks later, I was working the floor at the club and there was a tap on my shoulder. Holy cow it was him again but this time he called me by name. "Joe, we are jamming after the club closes. I want you to sit in with us.". I didn't leave the club until 7 a.m. and got to sit and jam with the man himself. Your reaction to a genuine man like Stevie is beautiful. What you see in this video is 💯 him. A few short months later, I found out about his death and was heartbroken. We lost a legendary man but his soul lives on through people like you. I don't know if you noticed, but he started the song playing a red guitar. He went to tune it and signaled to his tech to get him another. He never missed a note in the change. No one else could do an instrument change mid-song and no miss a beat. SRV was one of a kind. Thank you Stevie, for all the great music you left us to enjoy. And thank you, Maddie, for the reaction.

Grew up in Memphis, and I got to see him in an old smoky juke joint down on Beal St, He changed my life. You didn't see Stevie you experienced him, it was like going to Church. 35 years later, he can bring you to tears with one note. I'm so Thankful I got to be there.

This concert was from after he got clean and sober. He had 4 years clean when he died in a helicopter crash and he absolutely had a great message to share. He was a really good soul and the world lost a good and a truly humble man that day. I'm just grateful that he left a legacy of some exceptional music for me and others to enjoy and guys like me and others like John Mayer who are a million times better guitarists than I will ever be to learn from and enjoy.

This is one of the most "laid back" performances of SRV and really great. If you want to see him really "cook" , then "Texas Flood Live at the El Mocambo" is one you don't want to miss. In my humble opinion SRV is the greatest Blues/Rock guitarist that has ever lived. Your reaction to him was great and your opinion of him is shared by practically all his fans!

For me Stevie was and still is the greatest guitarist of all time but for once in his life the greatest thing in this performance was the message he spoke. Stevie you and your kind in this world is greatly needed and missed.

Stevie was only 5'5,his bass player,who is 6'4 said Stevie's hands were as big as his! BORN FOR GUITAR! Before doing 200-Plus shows a year,he practiced atleast 5 hours a day,starting at age 9! A PRODIGY!

I used to see him before he was famous when I was growing up in Texas! Saw him many times after he did become famous by playing here in Switzerland at the Montreux Jazz Festival! You really need to see Texas Flood Live at the El Mocambo to see the best guitarist ever! It'll be life changing, guaranteed!

If you want to experience SRV's most radical playing, watch him play "Third Stone From the Sun" live at the Mocambo. It's his homage to Jimi Hendrix. And as someone who saw him perform in 1987, I enjoy watching folks see SRV for the first time. I get to live vicariously through your experience.

Stevie couldn't read music so he played by ear. The guitar change near the beginning was because the song is about Charlie his guitar tech who died suddenly, the guitar was a gift from him and Stevie named it Charlie. His favorite guitar is named Lenny, a gift from his wife Lenora.

Maddy, I was lucky enough to get to see Stevie once. But I'll always remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard that he died. Bums me out to this day. He was as good as they come.

That technique is called a rake. You drag the pick down the strings while muting them then unmute on the last string/note. The other thing is called call and response. Quite common in rock and blues. You play or sing something and then you (or someone else) plays something in response.

You actually nailed it when you said he was responding to himself. It's called a "call and response" usually done between two musicians, it comes off as a little self indulgent when some players do it with their singing, but Stevie pulls it off beautifully.

Notice that he started out with an orange guitar. Then he was playing the white guitar. The guitar tech came in and changed the guitar without Stevie losing a beat in the song. And when he kept going back and forth from the amplifiers, it's because the sounds were set for the orange guitar. Now he has to make the adjustments for the white guitar. He's a perfectionist.

The song is a tribute to his longtime friend Charlie Wirz. Charlie had built the White Strat for Stevie and that was the reason for the switch Stevie makes the guitar scream and cry all at the same time over the loss of his friend Charlie.

Stevie sadly passed in a helicopter crash just 7 years into his mainstream career. He is usually always in the top 5 guitarist conversation. which is extremely impressive for such a short career. He was a once in a lifetime guitarist and overall, a kind soul. He used to play upwards of 16 hours a day, and superglue is fingers back together when they started bleeding! The main cause of the bleeding being that he played some of the heaviest strings available, which isn't that baffling to a non guitarist, but to a guitarist, it is absolutely incredible the way he bent them. And, the craziest of all from a guitarist standpoint is that he knew hardly any music theory... The solos you heard coming from the guitar were different every time and entirely made up on the spot every time, without much music theory to guide him. It makes no damn sense how good he was. Now, Guitarists have always tried to replicate Stevie's playing ever since he popped out of the Texas blues scene, and no one, and I mean NO ONE, has ever replicated his playing. There is something in his fingers that only a very few select amount of humans have ever had, and whatever it is, it is not an aquired skill, you're born with it, and if Stevie had not sadly passed so early into his career... Everyone would know the name Stevie Ray Vaughan..... Next reaction has to be "Texas Flood" it is by far his most impressive performance.

I love this song so much. I've asked my family to play it at my funeral, hopefully many years from now.

Thanks for your reaction here, Maddy. I'm glad you found this guy. Stevie Ray Vaughn (aka SRV) called himself "an outlaw from south Dallas". Growing up very near there & being just a few years younger myself, we all regarded Stevie as very much a local hero and legend. He died in a helicopter crash just a few months after I got out of high school. It was such a tragic loss. I'm so glad we have so much of his music still here. Again, thanks for your reaction here. Thank you for transporting me back to a small theater in 1984 and letting me relive my night there. His first album had just been released and "Pride and Joy" was just starting to get airplay on radio. I can still remember making eye contact with others in the audience, and I'm sure our facial expressions matched yours. We knew we were in the presence of greatness - no, something beyond that. It sounds like a cliche or really cheesy, but I was still riding a music high hours later. Many years have passed and I've seen hundreds of shows and artists, but nothing topped that night. Maybe three or four other shows might compare, but none have surpassed it. I truly feel blessed that I was there.

Yea, I saw him live once in Dallas. 1983 or 84, I was 17 and he opened for the Moody Blues. I’d never heard of him, I think he was fresh off of playing for David Bowie, anyway, my friend said gimme a ride to the Moody Blues and I’ll give you a ticked. I thought cool he had 8th row near center. My friend read the Marquee and said who’s this Stevie Ray Vaughan guy and I said I don’t know just an opening act. Back in those days you could smoke a joint. We did and he had really good stuff, I was laughing my ass off cause my friend was a very funny guy and looked funny. The lights turned off and my friend was still talking, SRV and Double Trouble came on stage and starting playing within 30 seconds of SRV playing I told my friend listen to this guy he’s one of the greatest guitar players I ever heard. Truly!

Within the first minute of hearing SRV I felt like if I had the knowledge to create a perfect style for me that is what it would sound like. It was perfection. I had been a huge fan of a lot of blues and rock guitar players but this was the embodiment of them all. I was there in Alpine Valley the show before his last and it was mind blowing. I have a cd of that show that was recorded off the soundboard. I don't listen to SRV as much as I used to because it always makes me a little sad. I still listen to him with a tear in my eye. We were robbed of the very best of what a sober SRV was going to do. I felt like once he was sober he was going to light up the world with his talents. I feel that besides his obvious talents SRV knew what sounded good. His covers took those songs to another level. He would have been awesome in the studio helping other musicians to max their talents if he chose to do so.

Stevie's Live at El Mocambo "Texas Flood" is perhaps the best live guitar performance ever filmed.

Went to many SRV shows in Austin from 1981 to 88'. And even spoke with him and the band after a few of them while they were breaking down their set. SRV and Double Trouble - the best live shows ever; in my lifetime.

The amount of strength he has in his wrist to play behind his back is phenomenal. Not only does he keep playing while he switches position, he has the entire weight of the guitar held in one hand until he hooks the strap, but while he's playing he also has to angle the guitar a bit, and HOLD it there, so the strings don't hit his back, and mute. I've played guitar all my adult life, and know the strain it takes when you're supporting a neck heavy guitar with your fret hand. How he manages to maintain the dexterity in his fingers, I have no idea. As others have said, he uses VERY heavy gauge strings too, which would chew your fingers up unless you're used to them. His attack on each note is like nobody else. He was a pure bluesman too. Jeff Healey is another amazing blues guitarist. Check out "See The Light". There's a cool duet performance with SRV and Jeff Healey. RIP Stevie, and Jeff.

Welcome to the SRV club Maddy - I so enjoyed watching your reaction and listening to your commentary, wonderful, truly. I'm 65, did not discover SRV until after his death. I own several of his DVD's and I cherish them. He actually was here in my home town when I was in my rock heyday, but I did not know who he was. I saw Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Peter Frampton, Montrose and others, but to my great regret, I missed Stevie. Along with Pink Floyd, the two biggest misses in my entire life. Thank God for DVD's and/or RU-vid. If you've never looked at Pink Floyd live at Pompeii, go watch it!! If you haven't already, use RU-vid to learn that SRV was truly a one-of-a-kind. His big strong hands and very thick guitar strings was part of it, but his ability to move around on the strings and make them bend to his will is unique in this world (yes, in the entire world, just one SRV). I saw Stevie Ray & Jeff Beck at Cobo Hall in 1989 I think. Some incredible guitar playing. I fall into the trap of lists and ranking sometimes, but Stevie Ray & Jeff have to be high on any lists of real guitarist musicians. They were truly incredible in their own unique ways.
