SRV pours his heart and soul in every song. As a guitar player, I can appreciate the special touches (like the wah peddle magic) he infuses at just the right time. PS: how about a cameo from the singer (Brian) and drummer (Matt) of ‪@Shallowskymusic‬ !!! Thanks for setting the stage with some boomshakalas (kashakas)!!!

Fun fact, the foot pedal he is using in the beginning of the song was given to him by Jimi Hendrix family when he showed up on their doorstep and humbly asked if he could cover Jimmy’s song they give him the foot pedal and their blessing. And he did Mr. Jim Hendrix like nobody else could’ve do . Rest in peace, Stevie

Sadly, I was at Stevie Ray Vaughn's last concert the night his helicopter crashed after the show at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin August 26th 1990. The fog was so bad that we stopped and got a hotel room on the way home. The next morning when I got the horrible news I was devastated. The lineup was SRV, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Stevie's brother Jimmie and Buddy Guy. RIP SRV!

THIS is the video your guitar watches when you are not home. I think Stevie is the only guitarist who can do justice to Jimi’s playing. You ought to listen to Stevie’s cover of Little Wing. Number One---yeah, Stevie treated her bad. But rumor is, she liked it, lol. Hard to believe the old scarred gal is worth a cool million now. She used to belong to Christopher Cross and was real pretty back then. That was the Austin City Limits 1989 show. What I would have given to have been there. This was his last appearance on the show. He died almost a year later. Stevie Ray was amazing, but when he got clean & sober, he was truly a force to be reckoned with…. BTW, he began drinking when he was 7 until he was 30. He started using drugs as a teen, again up until he was 30. Got to where he had to pour his c0caine into a shot of whiskey for breakfast. He was not a big man, he was maybe 5 foot 7, but he could probably take enough in that one shot of whiskey to k!ll a giant. Thank g-d, he got clean the last 4 years of his life. The other guys in the band HAD to be on their toes with Stevie. He couldn’t read music, so he played by ear and every time he played a song, it was a little different from the last time he played. But, yeah, the drums and bass where tighter than a clam’s @$$hole, lol! Chris “Whipper” Layton (drums) and Tommy Shannon on bass. Tommy played at Woodstock with Johnny Winter. They were both amazing. Interesting factoid #1: Stevie was using Jimi Hendrix’s wah pedal (and an Ibanez Tube Screamer). Way back when Stevie’s brother Jimmy was the hot young guitar player in Dallas, his band got to open for Jimi when he came to Fort Worth. Jimi’s wah pedal was broken, so he borrowed Jimmy’s for the show. A few months afterwards, Jimmy gets a package from Jimi. Jimi had his old broken wah pedal fixed and gave it to Jimmy in appreciation. How frickin cool is THAT?? Jimmy eventually gave it to Stevie because Stevie idolized Jimi (Stevie also wore a couple of Jimi’s scarves in older videos. Factoid #2: SRV and the gang went and played a show at a prison one summer (not sure where though). Trouble is, the equipment truck got lost on the way there. Luckily, they still had enough equipment to play, but Stevies effect pedals were not part of it. As they are playing in the 100 degree heat, one of the inmates shouts, “Play Voodoo Child!!” Stevie: “Cant. All the Voodoo is in the truck!"

I was in high school when Jimi Hendrix hit the music world. We were all dumb founded by what we were watching and listening too. Holy crap, he changed the music world as we knew it. For 40 years I wondered what it would sound like to hear Jimi at 50 years old. Now it's been over 30 years since we lost Stevie and I wonder the same thing . I won't say who's the GOAT between those 2. All I'll say is, I, like millions of other music lovers, we've all been fortunate to live in a time where we got to hear both of them play when they were at their best. How lucky we are.

A thought just came to my mind as I was watching this. The two people who many consider the best of all time, Jimmi and Stevie, have something else in common. Both were self taught, (although Stevie definitely had mentors), and neither of them could read music. At all. I guess when you are a conduit direct to the gods of music, not much else matters.

@rebeccarose already said it. One of the last things my dad got me was the VCR tape of this performance, because he knew how much I loved it, & SRV. You guys crushed my soul with this, but in the best of ways. He also bought me my first guitar & amp when I turned 11, with lessons over the summer, with the promise of buying me a better guitar & amp if he saw that I was serious. A couple of years later, he made good on his promise. I'm 50 years old now, & still jammin'. I think of my dad almost every time I pick up one of my 3 axes. Thank you for contributing to keeping the amazing excellence of SRV alive. Keep on Rockin'. 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽

Lmfao that is a myth that is total BS and has been said of many guitar players including Kurt Cobain. It is not even possible to wire a piano wire in a Strat, SRV used regular guitar strings usually in the 13 gauge ballpark but as high as 18. This is from his own interview from 1983.

Believe this was on broadcast tv (PBS) -- Austin City Limits, one of the most under-rated music shows on the boob-tube back in the day. SRV was directly channeling Jimi that night! Chris Layton (drums) and Tommy Shannon (bass, via Johnny Winters' bands) complete "SRV and Double Trouble." Later, a keyboardist joined in -- Reese Wynans; check out the video for the song "Look at Little Sister," as it shows all 4 playing their hearts out (and it has the smoothest-ever guitar switch-out you'll see on stage during the song). I'll go ahead and mention a "must hear" of SRV's: live at El Mocambo "Texas Flood." Be prepared to freak-out!!!

Did you know that .Hendrix was Stevie's idle . Jimmy's dad gave Stevie's brother the wah pedal he had used, Stevie used it the rest of his carrier. Its the one he is using in this video. And Stevie remastered jimmy's whole catalog. Then released it with all proceeds going to the Hendrix family. I grew up in Dallas. I never got to hear him play before he hit the big time. But did hear rumors of this Quiet kid in a local band that was blowing peoples minds . Did get to see him live many times after he became big. Stevie loved playing in his hometown. He was a down to earth kind of shy guy . But man put that guitar in his hands and the magic always happened.

Drummer Chris Layton, Bass Tommy Shannon, they eventually added keyboardist Resse Wynans. The funny thing is, Stevie Ray Vaughan didn’t actually play just one set of strings. He actually played as light as 12s and as heavy as 17s at one point, but for most of his career, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s main guitars, his Number One and Lenny that are super legendary, were strung up with 13s-which is probably what you’ve heard of when you heard about Stevie Ray Vaughan’s guitar string gauges in the past. What you may not have heard of is that Stevie Ray Vaughan’s 13s weren’t your normal 13s. If you go to a guitar store and ask for a set of 13s for electric guitar, the chances are, the gauges inside that set are going to look a lot like a set of 13s for acoustic. Most likely, they’re going to go something like 13, 17, 26 wound for the third string, 36, 46, and 56. (Side note, Stevie Ray Vaughan is hardly the only famous guitarist to use a custom set of strings. Everyone from Jimi Hendrix to David Gilmore, Billy Gibbons, Tony Iommi, and many, many more have used very, very customized gauged sets of strings in order to dial in their setup for exactly how they play the guitar.)

There is an interesting video done by the luthier who works on Willy Nelson's guitar. Willy spends a fortune to keep that guitar going.

The only person to play hendrix better than hendrix. That might be on a cruise ship.the bassist is very good. You should listen and watch Texas flood live. There's the MTV acoustic performance that's incredible. If you watch him and hendrix play the 12 string SRV blows hendrix out of the water.

PBS used to do a show from Austin, TX. It was called Austin City Limits. This is from the show that SRV did. The bass player is Tommy Shannon. He is an outstanding player in his own right.

Stevie's been my favorite musician for the last 40 years. No disrespect to Hendrix but Stevie plays like Jimi wished he could play. Voodoo Child is probably my least favorite of Stevie's ( cover ) songs but most likely that's because I've heard/seen it SOOOO much. That doesn't mean I won't watch again. 🤘😆👍I've always heard that Stevie's never played a song the exact same way so that makes it all that more impressive what the band is doing.

I was, and always will be a huge fan, of Jimi Hendrix. But, IMHO, Stevie Ray Vaughan is better than Jimi. Jimi was a great innovator. He made sounds come out of a guitar, that no one else even thought of trying. Without Jimi, we may never have had guys like Stevie. RIP gentlemen.

Hendrix may have been more creative, but Stevie was a much better, cleaner, more musical player who, unlike Hendrix, rarely descended into cacophony. Stevie makes a lot of Hendrx vastly more listenable. This song is a case in point.
