He hammered those strings. Do you see the hybrid picking?!?!? I’ve been to hundreds of concerts and I’ve never experienced anything close to SRV I was lucky enough to see him many times. It was like he was in his own world. But he was always present. Performing was his gift.

Steel strings aren't classified as normal tension or hard tension like classical strings. They are classified by string gauge. .013" is the gauge of his first string. This is very heavy. Most of us use a .010" 1st. It's been said that Stevie had very large strong hands, and that is why he was able to bend them heavy gauge strings. The heavy strings contributed a lot to his sound. RIP SRV.

Yeah but the tuning is a half step down to E flat so it loosens the strings a little.

@jackempson3044
@jackempson3044 6 месяцев назад
There's no such thing as the best in all genres. It's too broad. Stevie was a Blues player that played mostly 1-4-5 shuffles and covered some Hendrix, he could play some mean leads in those shuffles. He wrote few songs. Covering songs is like painting by numbers if you play them close to the original, like Stevie is doing above. Those are Hendrix leads and licks.

Stevie did play a 13 gauge high E string, which is VERY heavy, however the rest of his strings were a set of 11 gauge strings, which while sorta heavy, are still close to a standard string set in terms of tension.

You must check out Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Healey-"Look at Little Sister ". Jeff was blind and had to sit with the guitar laid across his lap in order to play it. But, when the music begins to overtake him,he jumps up and does this wild playing/holding thing that he did,because he didn't use a strap. He literally is jumping,playing and holding onto that guitar as he rips it. It's the type of performance that will make you glad that are alive to witness such talent. Watch it, and prepare to be amazed. 👌

I think the movie with The Karate Kid you're thinking of, is "Crossroads", with Steve Vai (who played classical piece also), and the blues/slide guitar sounds came from a guitarist named Ry Cooder. Good movie to tie into here😊 keep up the good work

Guitar string sets are generally sold by the thickness of the High E string. Standard gauge are usually 10s, or 0.010 inch. He did play very heavy gauge string sets like 13s, but he also played tuned down a half step, so the strings were thick, but the tension on them was a bit lower than they'd normally be. That said, the guy bends the strings at the nut, which is still pretty insane.

You made a really good point about the guitar strings as probably noted below. They are very heavy strings and bending on a Stratocaster guitar is harder due to its longer scale length than a Gibson-scale guitar. I heard testimony that even after decades of playing with tough calluses, Stevie would sometimes bleed after concerts. But that gave the tone and love!!

#Voodoo Chile was written by the late Jimi Hendrix back in 1969 I believe. The melody had all the classic Hendrix sounds .. the 'wah, wah, wahs' and distortions .. that Jimi was forever known for. Stevie Ray covered 3 Hendrix songs, that I'm aware of .. #Manic Depression, #Voodoo Chile and #Little Wing .. the last two mentioned are the ones that SRV was widely known for. He took the songs, cleaned them up a bit by reducing some of the tone distortion, making the notes sharper and flow easier together. Stevie never changed the sound of Jimi's or anyone's song to the point it became unrecognizable. #Little Wing was originally written with lyrics .. However, SRV made it his own by performing it strictly instrumental. Lastly .. the movie you are thinking of is #Crossroads with Ralph Macchio. Macchio plays a young guitarist that becomes intrigued with blues music and a 'behind the scenes' sort of story about how blues musician and legend Robert Johnson had become so talented. Story goes that Johnson had gone down to the 'Crossroads' in the Mississippi Delta and sold his soul to the Devil himself just to know how to play blues guitar. To be the 'best of the best' .. I'm sure .. was in the fine print also. As Macchio reads on, he also comes across the story of a long, lost song of Johnson's given or lost along the way with the contract between Johnson and the Devil. Steve Vai plays the devils blues guitar virtuoso that battles it out at the end of the movie with Macchio.

I think Hendrix version of Hendrix songs were better. Stevie did a great job but he was no Hendrix. He was a very good 1-4-5 shuffle blues player that played hot leads and covered a few Hendrix songs to mix it up. Hendrix, was a pioneer that had a new style of playing that Stevie was later greatly influenced by, Hendrix was a writer too. Stevie didn't write much. Most of what Stevie wrote was 1-4-5 blues shuffles. Hendrix playing was much broader.

The movie youre thinking of is “crossroads” with ralph macchio and jamie gertz. You really need to see his “texas flood” video. This is good, but that one is mind numbing. 13 gauge strings are very heavy for electric guitar. I prefer light strings and use 8 to 42 gauge strings. I have one telecaster strung with 7 to 38’s like billy gibbons.

Yeah I stick to 9-46 because I don't play guitar in order to feel like I'm struggling lmao - there are a bunch of people who dropped to 8's for more accuracy in the sound bc thicker strings can be a little muddy. 13:35 on practicing for perfect passages vs improvisation: man it is so worth it to spend time on the latter and there is nothing like using a looper pedal - or the sequencer in a daw as a looper so you can add drums etc too - and just playing whatever comes to your hands for whatever riff you threw in there. The less time spent working rather than playing, the better. I promise you that doing this will recharge the aspect of you that sits down and works on specific things, it''s a feminine vs masculine energy split and paying attention to which energy you're in and flowing with that on the instrument is pretty fulfilling once you find a rhythm. Useful to sit and listen to those loops and *sing a guitar solo over them - it's like tapping into to stream of notes that your core knows are the right ones.
