I remember when I watched this video when I first started drumming. Time flies. And it's just amazing how Mr Stephen just keeps getting better. I'll never forget how those videos helped me with my drumming, ever.

It's fun to see one of Copeland's parts broken down like this... it's remarkable that they can feel so natural even when they are musically kinda bizarre... at least in a rock context.

Great video. Love Stewart Copeland. I love all of Police's hits, but my favorite drumming song is Driven To Tears, followed closely by Bomb's Away. Roxanne is iconic, but I'm a sucker for King of Pain. Great flams.

Hey there..just started watching some of your videos. Keep up the good work....you could be the next Mike Johnson, I'm sure you've heard of him. I started watching his stuff years ago and he's blown-up pretty big now. Again, stay with it and keep improving on how best to get your message and ideas out to other drummers. We all appreciate it!

Hi Steve, love your work - could you do a bit on the practical elements of gigging - like pacing yourself - i.e I play in a ska / reggae covers band and after some of the faster songs I'm a pool of sweat, trying to recover for the next song - so how to play efficiently and still sound dynamic. Also, on stick type, which you suggest for different sounds styles, also, how to stop the stick feeling like a bar of soap when you get sweaty palms!

How are those pauses counted out throughout the song? Before he sings "Rox....Anne". I know the snare hits right on the "Anne". He does the little hi-hat triplet before that. That is tricky to line-up exactly.

Very useful video Stephen. So hard to eliminate the Kick on 1 when practising some of this stuff. Stewart's incredible use of the hi Hat is excellent too. Totally agree with SXI96 comment below too. Its understandable why so may Jazz drummers also rate him very highly with his open minded approach to various rhythms. To be honest id like to find a lesson on 'Bring on the night' as im struggling to work out what he's playing on the Hats on that awesome tune.......that would be very useful.

***** i play traditional grip all the time thanks to stewart but this video was helpful and helped me learn alot more about his style of play
@alltogethermusicproduction8223
My only critique would be that Stewart plays the kick and snare together reggae style all throughout the verses

Stewart Copeland is amazing but you need to have been playing a while to hear this as as his playing is much more subtle. Another one is after fill the splash cymbal. Another song from my jam sessions So Lonely but that suited my punk repertoire more as that one gets pretty heavy and fast but before the police Stewart played in punk bands at The Roxy and even with The Police they played The Roxy on the same line up as The Adverts from One Chord Wonders fame.

To become stewart,you must master traditional grip and use it 98 percent of the time
@fuzzylogiceire
@fuzzylogiceire 10 лет назад
You'd be better off mastering syncopated rhythms to become Stewart than a grip that has no real benefit over matched, especially in rock.

at 2:12 you say he stops his fills on the count of four,and you play those fills, but that crash with bass at the end of the fill is on the "and of four", not the four. I dont mean to be petty about it but again its important that its explianed correct for people trying to get their heads round it.
@nottudyug

Steve Steve . I think what Stephen is demonstrating at 2.12 is actually 3e& 4 (Rack tom on '3e' Floor Tom on the '&' Crash '4' ...... I THINK
