One thing I liked about BO1 is that you can hear the PC (Mason, Hudson and Reznov) call out these things in mid gameplay and not just on scripted moments

I don't think so...If I'm not mistaken, the MKb42 is a "Striker-Fired" Asssault Rifle, while the MP/StG44 is a hammer-fired Assault, that's the only differences I can reckon from both guns, correct me if I'm wrong at it.

Jon No, it isn't the first one as it used a full sized rifle round. Assault rifles use an intermediate between full power rounds and pistol rounds. Germi the savage I'm not sure exactly but an example is the MKb-42(H). It predates the StG so the very existence of the MKb proves that the StG wasn't the first assault rifle. Even the soviets had assault rifles before WW2 but development had to be stopped because the war started. In fact they even made bullpup rifles during the war, so what does that tell you?
