There is an acronym used in shielded metal arc welding called CLAMS.
It is a way to remember to cover all the bases when you are teaching someone to weld.

C is for current. and that includes polarity, amperage, voltage, and even advanced settings like dig, or hot start functions.
L is for Length of arc. Happiness is a tight arc.
A is for angle of travel. Stick welding is pretty forgiving on angle of travel but if you get out of scope and use too much angle either push or pull, things dont go as well as they should.
M is for manipulation of electrode. sometimes its best to use a drag technique, other times a weave motion works best.
S is for speed of travel. with stick welding, generally speaking, speed should be just slow enough to avoid undercut.
