In the mid-90s, I bought this Stihl 044 chainsaw brand new and used it while beachcombing for logs in British Columbia, Canada. Today, I begin to take the saw apart to clean and inspect it while also explaining how beachcombing is performed. This video is a mixture of mechanical information about the Stihl 044, some general saw safety tips and beachcombing how-to info that I hope you will find interesting and informative.

It was fun and exciting to go out searching for logs. A scavenger hunt every day. Lots of work, long hours and wet feet but I'm glad I did it. It was work for strong backs and weak minds and I certainly qualified. Haha

Excellent information on salvage rights. I had no idea that’s how the whole process works. Good looking saw! Pays to look after your stuff! Cheers, Mike.

Probably the same salvage rights in freshwater lakes of the province too, although it's been many years and some laws do change. I'll always remember a huge log trapped high on a beach that I didn't get, but worked on at high tide for several days. It was enormous! Over 5 feet in diameter. The next week, I passed that spot and it was gone...someone with a tug probably had the power to pull it back into the water. It was the one that got away HaHa

How's she goin'? Nice maintenance tips for your saw. And Stihl do make nice saws. I had a Husky 55 and thought it was the answer, but no where near as good as the Stihl MS250 I bought 2 years ago!! Interesting story about getting the logs off the beach. I never new it worked like that!! Take 'er easy!!

The MS250 is a good little saw too. I have one back east. This old 044 has been a great saw with lots of power. As I age, I find that perhaps I have too many saws........WAIT. What am I saying? Too many Saws? IMPOSSIBLE LOL Glad you enjoyed the video, have a great weekend, Mike.

@@EverydayProjects I have a buddy who told me once he was driving to work and realized he had NO Chainsaws at all. He had just sold his. So instead of going to work, he said he had to get a saw. He had never been without a saw since he was 10 years old!! So he went straight to the Stihl dealer and bought a new saw, then went to work! LOL

Beach coming, quite the little history lesson! But what about Molley's Reach? 😆 That is a good saw and with a little attention to detail its going to serve you well for many years to come👍 Good one Craig🍻

There are still real-life beachcombers in BC, even today. Molly's Reach is fictional but is an actual restaurant in Gibson's BC. It has been sold. www.coastreporter.net/local-news/mollys-reach-restaurant-has-been-closed-most-of-the-summer-heres-what-we-know-7536555 I beachcombed for a couple of years, full-time and did OK until the prices eventually fell. It was fun work for a young guy. But I was working on BC's north coast far from Molly's and the Sunshine Coast. I was lucky enough to be on the beach one day with two Kermode Bears, the sub-species of Black Bear that exists on Princess Royal Island and area. There aren't many of these yellow-white bears with the shorter nose but it was a thrill to see some. Of course, this was before cell phones in every pocket so unfortunately, no pictures. All the best, Marc!

@@EverydayProjects Awesome 👍 Similar to us in Ontario we have the cinnamon bear, super rare and I got to see one when travelling out to a moose hunt. They are found predominantly in the Wawa region.

@@OpenAirOutdoors Cool! I saw the Kermode bears on Banks Island (near Princess Royal Island) on BC's central coast. I had joined forces with a local First Nations log salvage team who had a much larger vessel with accommodations for extended trips. Me and another fellow went to the beach while the large boat waited for us to chain up some logs to tow. The bears strolled down onto the beach about 100 feet away and seemed oblivious to us. They weren't in a hurry so we got to watch them for several minutes. The cinnamon bears sound interesting but I wouldn't want one at the tent flap!

It's hard to swagger and be tough for the gals when your boots are full of salt water, but yes, I did this type of work for a while. I'm not a relic but barnacles have been found behind my ears! I worked mostly alone out on the North Coast, hiring a local man sometimes when I needed extra help. Mostly, though, it was just me and my big Newfoundland/Lab Cross dog out there in the boat, working the beaches and making a buck. I used to call that dog my "Life-Preserver" because when he swam he was tireless and strong, and he floated high in the water. If ever the boat were to sink, I had my mind made up that I'd be grabbing his collar for the swim to shore!

I'm so glad that you finally met my Sweetie! We've been together through thick and thin and are still going strong. I have been tripping and stumbling in the woods for decades and it has built a character kind of like your reputation for Art work: Strong, healthy, with bad knees and a smile on my face. Just like the big smile you wear when you drink coffee and eat donuts instead of mowing!

Logs are there for the taking, so long as you get them scaled and pay the taxes. There are many floating around and washed up on the beaches, lost by logging companies who tow big log booms along the coast. Maybe you'll be here for the Spring Art Festival??
