I just purchased a Stihl 391 Chainsaw with a 25 inch bar and chain. This is the biggest Farm and Ranch chainsaw Stihl has. To go better you have to buy a professional model of chainsaw. Today I am going to try it out for this first time. I am going to cut down 2 trees and cut them into firewood.

I am a stihl tech. the reason stihl only recommend a 20' bar with the 391 is the bar oiling system .I was told ,it will not adequately oil the longer bars. but i have seen many with longer bars . keep an eye on your bar and chain to make sure they are getting enough oil.

I run a 25 on mine, with the oiler set at the max setting, and it oils it just fine. Anything over 25 is where it becomes a risk.

Once you get used to running a faster cutting saw ,you will use that saw more and more . With the longer bar you don't have to bend over to cut on the ground. That is also a plus . Congratulations sir

@Dave A I run a 24 " bar on mine and burn 22 inch logs . So I start at the right side of the log lay the saw sideways down the log and us the tip of the bar to score the bark. Then cut all the pieces and they are the same lenth

Love my 391, broke it in while cutting down an oak tree. Have had it for just under a year now, works great. Frequently did a muffler mod on the saw, pulls a 25” full comp chain like a champ (better than stock), definitely runs amazing with a 24” full skip chain as well. It runs great with premium gas as well, recommend using it after break in.

I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle ru-vid.comUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

That certainly is a sweet looking saw . Nice Valentines Day gift for yourself . LOL .All engines need a break in period . The saw will get better in time . Even my diesel truck had a break in period . Couldn't go over 80 miles hr for 1000 miles . Then another 1000 miles pulling a trailer before I could pull my big 5th wheel . Break in period is important . So glad you got a longer chain . Was watching you hesitate there for a second and was thinking don't be lazy . Get the longer chain . Your truck will thank you for it .

Hey buddy.... It keeps dying because it needs carb adjustments for the cold weather. Also take off the air cover and there might be a cold air adjustment too. Look in your manual. And try and refuse to pull the trigger all the way until it's broken in. 5-10 tanks have to run through it to be broken in. Arborist from Wisconsin. Great videos Oh yeah ps. You'll love that 25"bar for bucking. Less bending over when you get good with it. :).
@TheWoodsmanMilling
@TheWoodsmanMilling 4 года назад
The 391 does have a cold weather setting. I believe the cold weather settings start at the 271. Also, I've contacted Stihl directly, and the only time you don't run a saw at wot is when it's not under load.

I've had a ms441c for many years now and love it. Aside from the weight, which is offset by its performance it's an awesome saw. I use it for firewood and with an Alaskan mill. I use a 16 or 20" bar with my vertical Alaskan mill and the 20 or 28" bar with the horizontal mill. The 20" bar is my go to for firewood, but the 28" handles the larger stuff.

Bought me a ms250 to work in conjunction with my 441 and anything under 20" I just use the ms250. It's a fantastic light saw that actually cuts quite well,as long as you understand its limitations. I'm also working on an old ms310 that's sat for years and years. It needs the carburetor and hoses replaced and probably a new coil. Itd be an in between saw that I'll keep a 20" bar on for some mid sized wood or as a backup.

I’m a little jealous. I wish I had the 25” bar. But as far as the 391 goes, I bought a used 390 several years ago, modded the muffler, pulled the plastic plugs in the carb to reset the fuel mix, got it running to 13,500 rpm. The throttle response is much better, but still has a little lag. But performance wise, the 39* line of chainsaws are as good as the 36* pro line chainsaws. The pro line is about $300 more, which is worth it for professionals using a saw 8 hours a day, but the 39* saws are beasts which perform like a pro saws, and give everybody, except perhaps professionals, exceptional performance for the life of the user. I love this saw!

Good morning and a great video Evan and Rebecca. That saw is a great piece of equipment for your farm, read the break in instructions and see if you have to run it at full throttle a little while and then have to let it come to full throttle before touching the wood? The engine may be computerized and have to adjust itself? It will get better and you will get better at horsing it around so much 😉. The felling worked out great, good job. Here in Colorado, the gasoline at the pumps has ethanol in it. Small engines do better without the ethanol. I go to the airport and buy "aviation" gas. No ethanol and higher octane. That may help with the sluggishness also. Love watching your videos.

Absolutely. Find Premium Gas with NO ethanol. You can ruin an engine fast. The other thing is ALWAYS shake the heck out of your gas can before filling the saw, and shake the saw before starting. This keeps water or and contaminants like ethanol from hitting the engine in one blast.

LOL. My first thought was "oh no" when you talked about pulling on the tree with your truck. Glad you had enough chain to keep it a safe distance away. I have a Stihl MS-271 Farm Boss with a 20" bar that I use for some of the larger trees on our property, and I have been very pleased with it. Even that smaller saw is a bit heavy to use for an extended period of time (for me). That saw that you purchased looks like a very nice one and should serve you well. One other note, I hate bucking logs (cutting up into firewood logs) on the ground because my clumsy behind will always end up running the chain into the ground. You did a very good job.

What dboz417 says is right on. I bought A new Stihl weedeater onetime and kept taking it back to the shop. The guy kept telling me to run only 89 to 92 Octane and it'll run fine. He was right. Another thing will help is mix your gas a little richer. Instead of using a whole gallon of gasoline fill your can about 8 tenth of a gallon. This works great for me.

Just got my MS 391 with 25" bar today. About that fuel and 'dogging' problem... as far as the 2023 models go, Stihl premix 0 Ethanol fuel is all it's designed to use. In fact, at the dealer today I was informed that using anything other than the specified fuel would void my warranty immediately. So, after the safety and operation training (apparently required in this State), I purchased 1 gallon (yes ONE gallon) for $42.43. Now about why I bought it in the first place... I had some pros come in and cut a historic water oak down in my back yard. The trunk 12" above ground level measures 9'10" across. Over 85 feet tall with 70 - 80 ft horizintals at 3'+ diameter. My job: make 5 years of fire wood. My prediction: Using the specified fuel and retaining my warranty will cost over $500.00 (not counting bar oil and lunches). Otherwise, it's the best saw I"ve ever owned/operated. It's fast, strong as all get out, and safe. I worked for a large tree company in the past so I've pretty much used everything. Good thing tho, nobody will want to borrow my saw if I tell them they have to furnish the fuel.
