Stihl MS170 chainsaw service, cleaning and chain sharpen using a Stihl 2N1 Chain sharpener. We will perform an engine service and inspection , clean out the muffler and spark arrestor, inspect the bar and chain and sharpen the chain, and perform a test cut through hard maple (and lose our camera to the wind). Enjoy!

Nice to see one that has been kept clean and sharp enough that it hasn’t overheated!

Got one of them as well. My big saw is a Husky but the little one will cover 90% of the firewood cutting. It hasn't been run for close to 2 years now and is over 10 years old. I will go and see my local Stihl dealer and get a whole kit put together..carby kit/air/fuel filter and a new fuel line at least.

I had a MS 170 given to me by my neighbor it needed a tuneup and carburetor now it runs great, and it has a new chain now as well. It’s surprising how well it cuts, gutsy for its size.

JFYI, you can fit the adjuster of the larger models in the MS170, so you can tension it from the side like the larger ones. There's a dummy plug between the two fastening bolts which can be easily removed. I got a MS170 2mix since about 7 years, making firewood and this is really a fine saw. It is really much more capable than it looks. The only pains are the air filter and the non-adjustable pump for the cutting oil.

I’ve got one 170 someone gave to me. Haven’t had a chance to dig into it yet. I had a 180 I really liked but ended up flipping it. Seems like there’s a lot of these 170’s around. Decent quality homeowner grade.

There are lots of them out there! For the price of them - it's hard to beat it!

I have a clamp on vice I bring to my outside bench and torch all exhaust parts due to the heavy duty smoke and flame production from the muffler. 😂 I usually wire wheel the outside of the muffler just to make it look a little better.

I like to flush out the bar nose sprocket and hit it with the air gun just to hear how cool it sounds when it spins at high RPM. 😁 There’s always a debate about this, but if there’s a grease port I always grease it and then spin it again.

They just discontinued this saw in the US. I saw them for sale last month in Virginia.

Really enjoying your channel. Is there anything that can be done to improve on the air filter ?. My 170 gets a bit oc dusg once in a whils despite my best efforts.

Isn't there supposed to be a deflector between exhaust and cylinder to deflect the airflow for cooling??

I’ve got to get a different flashlight to examine cylinders. I really try to see both sides to tell me how much debris has gotten through the air filter, which tells me how religious the operator has been about cleaning that intake filter.

We need some new flashlights in the shop as well!

@@marriedwithsmallengines I’m trying to find one that has the flexible neck that’s no longer that a few inches and has a very small light so it’ll fit inside cylinder openings, fuel and bar oil tanks, etc. I’m also going to get an endoscope when I can afford one. The prices seem to have come down in the past couple of years. Again, I want one with a shorter cable - I’m looking at OPE and automotive, not my septic drain pipe! 😉

@@Rein_CiarfellaNightIze sells a tactical helmet light for aviators and operators that sounds like what you’re looking for; short length, flexible small gauge wire that has a single bright led on the end; runs on coin cell batteries. If I find a link I’ll repost.

0:44 most of the people will use it to cut a lot more than a load of logs… nothing wrong with that!
