I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle ru-vid.comUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.
I bought two of these the other day, having my doubts. I got home and hit my Stihl 020T chain with it and cut some wood. All I can say is that I’m a believer, these are amazing.
Wow, I am a female that purchased smaller size tools, 2 different chainsaws, etc. Due to my husband passed away last year his tools were too large. My little saws started cutting like a table knife trying to cut a steak. I called Stil explained what I had and they sent me the sharpener with the P. You explained what the P on the size was. You were the most informative, teeth go TWO different ways kind of on an angle🤦 Thank you, your video had information others did not even address. Also the chips vs powder. I was working in full powder..🤦 Thank you👍
Great video. I just bought an MS 250 and after watching your video I ordered this sharpener for my saw. The one I ordered is for .325" pitch chain. So glad you mentioned that there are different size sharpeners.
Dude I bought this fantastic sharpener 6 months ago and saves me so much time, and time is money. I always try to buy American, but right next to him is German made and you can’t beat stihl
A very informative video. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your explanation on which of two 3/8” sharpeners to buy. I picked up the standard 3/8” sharpener last night for my MS 180C. After watching your video I ordered the 3/8”P and today I’ll return the other one. Thanks again, it was very helpful!
Very recently I “found” this sharpener at the local hardware store. Thought it was a rather expensive gimmick at $45.00. You proved me wrong, so now I will buy one. A commenter mentioned that the flat file files the top portion of the chain at the same time as it hits the tooth. I wish you had commented on that because you did an excellent job of producing this video. Thank you! I just subscribed.
Thanks for the information and how to. For a guy that has everything this is going on my Christmas list. After cutting down three trees with my MS 170, it needs to be sharpened.
Great work that’s so good. I have the 180 and 260 and like you, I have both 2 in 1 sharpeners and they really are fantastic like you’ve shown! Well done :)
Lol! I know this video is old but I just bought my first chainsaw, stihl ms170 and it was doing great but after 30-40 mins, i guess i dull'ed up the chain and it started getting harder and no more chips except saw dust. Googled folks using their roto zips and to sharpen and luck has it i already have one with lots of attachments and didn't do anything for me, went out and got this and yikes! 5 strokes each and what a difference! glad i found this video!
I’ve got a 170 and love it for small jobs. Use the farm boss on the good stuff. I got one of those files when I bought the 170. It sure does make quick work of sharpening the chain. Love that lil booger. Gotta get one for the farmboss.
I'm no expert, which makes this tool invaluable. It's idiot-proof, although chainsaws aren't! Anyway, I feel much safer knowing my old chainsaw works very efficiently now, instead of struggling. Oh, it's a D24AV Super, made in West Germany 1986! That old thing used to scare me, but not when it cuts through wood like butter.
If no one has mention it yet, get you a stump vise to hold your saw while sharping your chain out in the woods. I have one and its great. Got mine on Amazon. It's an Oregon brand.
Great video something about how you explained that made it much easier to understand. I need to go see if the one I bought today is the correct one now lol
@@TKCL Thank you for the reply! I have an 025 with a 16, I run the RS chain. It blows my mind everytime I use it! I got an ms180, for me there is a sharp learning curve to sharpening a chain that small.
Bought my first real chainsaw - Stihl and am a newb and must have hit dirt 2 seconds after i did my first cut. Thought man what a crappy chain! then then light went off and bought one of these 2in1 for my MS211C and man like you said night and day! After 2 months of use A pass on each tooth and it cuts like brand new each and every time.
@@TKCL Thanks for sharing your videos. I really enjoy watching them. I came across your channel researching log splitters (want one of those next!). The 25 ton County Line was just on sale two weeks ago for $799 from $899! Too bad i didn't have the funds then.
It's amazingly simple, I've read up on filing a lot but always talked myself out of it. Glad I tried this one, no more excuses to not always have a sharp chain.
If u do want to play with hand filing as u can do custom filing for certain situations. Another good video guy to watch on hand filing (his knowledge is quite high he lives this stuff for years) not to step on ur channels toes. Bucking Billy Ray has many videos on hand filing, on why/what ur doing and gets u in there while he doing it. I thought i was good till i watched him and he taught me all kinds of new stuff. And im not one to pass on shared knowledge and then go experience it.
I think all the Stihl 3/8 sharpeners are the same in this style, But like you said its the file diameter. (Its 5/32 Round files in the one for Pico Chains.)
Yellow and green only talk about the safety low kick back next to the raker. U can have full chisel yellow or green and semi chisel yellow or green. Use full on hardwoods use semi on soft or dirty wood. Full dulls faster than semi.and i usually only hit raker ever third touch up. Touch up each tank if have the time. U did a good job though for sure.
Kelley....I cringed when you started cutting with no kevlar pants. Take it from someone who learned the hard way 6 years ago and 23 stitches later on my left leg. Just looking out for you brother! I like the sharpener.
@@TKCL I totally understand. They do get hot. I had about 10 cuts to make one afternoon. I slipped on a log and the saw was de-cellerating when I touched my leg. It felt like a rope burn until I saw the damage I did. It's just that it can happen so fast.
damm kelly!!,,,,great video bro!!...you gave me some good tips on sharpening the 170 . just purchased this saw....love it...thanks again, i just subscribed!!
@@TKCL I need a little help i have a ms170 and the bar says 3/8” p but the sharpener you recommended is a .325 “. Whats the difference? Sorry ahead of time i have no clue
Thanks for this video! Definitely going to get one of those sharpeners. For a saw you use so much, how is there still paint on the bar? Mine is about bare!
Lol I don't know why the bar is holding up so well. I still have the original bar on my 15 year old 260 pro and it looks decent too. Thanks for watching!
I've never seen your videos before but that was very informative and detailed! I love it..I'm definitely going to subscribe to see what other great videos you have. I keep buying new chains so I'll try that sharpener even though I don't have a Stihl. Think the brand will matter?
I have 2 stihl model 170ms chainsaws that I use here on my farm, and I'd like to know where you get your chainsaw sharpener and how much did it cause you when you bought it ok thanks for the cool video sir👍⁉️
Don’t bother with Amazon. Did you buy your saws from a Stihl dealer? If so, go back to your Stihl dealer and support your dealer and purchase one from them. Always support your local dealer and businesses. Hell Pete it’s only money.
Bought mine from my local stihl dealer, plus now I've got me a farm boss to.and one husqvarna model 440,but the stihl's are really my bread and butter when it comes to using here in my farm.i also bought me a stihl pole saw to.my Remington pole saw was getting to need a new chain on it,I'm not putting down my Remington pole saw now its just that its served me faithfully for many of years.and you are completely right about doing all my business with my local stihl dealer now, because Amazon and ebay are ripoffs and really carry no warranties for what they sell now so thanks for the info now!!!!!
Can't say I disagree. But my dealer is a two hour round trip. I'm not heading all the way back for him to make a couple of buck on a item that costs me 10-15 dollars in gas to get. I bought one from a dealer and one from Amazon when I decided I wanted one for my other saw.
I need a little help i have a ms170 and the bar says 3/8” p but the sharpener you recommended is a .325 “. Whats the difference? Sorry ahead of time i have no clue
I feel like it does, there is eventually a point you can't sharpen anymore or the chain will stretch past the point of adjustment. That takes a long time though.
Pretty sure you can load different files, but not 100 percent sure on that. I just bought another one for the convenience and always being ready to go.
Awesome video, quick question does it matter what side of the sharpener you use, if you turn it to the angle correctly, i feel like am missing something as mine doesn't glide as easily, and i still seem to be getting mostly dust even though i can see i've got some of the material off the chain off.
It absolutely does, if you look at the sharpener there is a arrow on the side that should be up and pointing away from you. Also the plastic is at a specific angle that should line up with your bar when held at the proper angle. I'm guessing that's somewhere around 35-45 degrees instead of going directly away from the bar. If this doesn't make sense ill make a video showing it. First stroke or two is usually rough, then it smooths up. Metal dust is normal for me.
If the chain is really dull, as in making saw dust instead of chips, I sharpen 5 strokes per tooth. Also don't put a lot of pressure forcing the sharpener into the tooth. Smooth strokes work well for me. But if really dull, it always catches the first couple of strokes. Don't forget some slight down pressure so the flat file takes a little bit of metal off of the rakers or depth gauges.
Not sure, if you look on the bar near the saw power head, the chain size is usually stamped in it. My 260 pro takes a. .325 sharpener and chain. There are 3 or 4 different size chains! On that saw you could run two different sizes that I can think of.
I just bought stihl saws number 49 and 50 .ha ha ha no seriously i have 50 my favorites are the 500i and the 391 and the one handers this Is a great sharpening video
@@TKCL thanks again. We live in Saskatchewan Canada and we had a track-hoe square off the yard and push in an old farm yard and I want to make use of the trees for the wood stove and wood chips for around the house . So I am new at this. Thanks again.
Great video. Very useful information and a couple of good 'tips'. But NO! I think using your finger/finger nails to test sharpness is an absolute 'no no'. Doing that is just asking for trouble. Otherwise, great vid and thank you for uploading.
It's usually stamped into the bar near the dogs spikes. I know my ms261 uses a .325 file/chain, but you have to be careful, because you can run two different size chains on that size saw. Just look around on each bar until you find a what size it says. I can't remember for sure, but if you pull the chain out of the bar, it might be stamped on the lower side of the chain.
