Stihl ms462 ChainSaw Tips - 3 You Need To Know!

As we continue through the 462 build sequence, a couple of items come to mind that need to be addressed and/or considered.
The controller reset recommendation especially applies when there is a large elevation change or the saw gets engine work. Technically speaking, running the saw with the choke on has a range of between 30 and 60 seconds. I went the full minute.
Looking at the paperwork but paraphrasing:
Control lever to 🔺️ position
Engage chain brake
Start without depressing trigger
Run engine at least 30 seconds to 60 max in🔺️ position
Disengage chain brake
Hold trigger for at least 30 seconds
The engine accelerates but is hesitant initially, it then fluctuates. The controller is now calibrating. It will then go to high idle quickly. As soon as the engine rpms drop back down, release the trigger.
At around the 20 second mark the my saw cleaned out and went to high idle.
The controller will "boot" itself over time to the locale as well. So if a guy does not want to go through the process there is just a longer time period before the saw is running at optimum.
With the oiler, it's summed it pretty good in the video - longer bar, adjust the roll pin stop so that you can use the control bolt in the high volume output position.
Probably the most important part of this session is understanding the maintenance aspect regarding the "new & improved" fine mesh screen of the fuel filter. More so, because it can get plugged from debris from the much smaller micro size when compared to the earlier version.
Bottom line here - the more times you have to drain the crapp out of your tank, the sooner you will need to replace the newer version filter.

Ben hi. Logging or felling timber? Those are two different sports. I have not been on a skidding crew - whether yarder or cat side in any long term capacity - since in the early '80s. I do work around those guys every so often though. Seems like a lot of the yarding crews run Husky saws. The air cleaner systems were better for taking the abuse of the little or no maintenance that seems to happen. You never said a bar length, cc class, or which dealer you frequent. Extra bars and parts saws play a role too. Zipped or stock enters into the equation as well. Ergos are a consideration. Thanks for watching.

Hi mate, a mate just recently brought the same saw which comes with a 20” bar! It has a huge oiler issue, with barely any oil coming out at all, and our hard woods are hard! Tapping in that roll pin is a real treat! The guy at the Stihl shop doesn’t recommend doing it, as it won’t do anything at all, except damage the oil pump!!! Plus he said you can’t run anything bigger then that bar! What can l say??? 🤔 Better not😉 Cheers Stoney...

In the owner's manual for the 462 it shows and recommends tapping that pin in to increase the oiling. I done mine before I even before it made it's 1st cut.

How many tanks or gallons of mixed fuel do you run before you change out the new filter? I just picked up a new MS462CM so I’m very curious and extremely grateful for these two tips that are invaluable.

888HUSKERS hi. How dirty is the fuel going in the tank? How much saw dust is making it past the cap? In other words, more often if the tank is getting a lot of small woody debris or contaminated fuel in it. The amount of fuel run through the saw will play a part. Some guys burn through a gallon or gallon and a half a day - I'll do that while on a tree killing spree. Some guys don't burn that much in a month. It is impossible for me to tell anyone how often they need to replace their fuel filter. It will be up to the operator to assess the conditions and use, then take action accordingly. Tac hi. The shop should do it initially. If your changing quite a bit in elevation from that location then yes. The "A.I." in the controller will get dialed "all by itself" just by operating the saw if you decide not to recalibrate yourself. It won't take forever either. Yall ever tried to put a small piece of panty hose over your air filter? We always used to do that when we ran our bikes in the dunes or in fine silty dusty conditions. Its makes a great and cheap prefilter for your air filter. It also makes cleaning your K&N type filters easier to clean when it comes time. I's not sure you guys would ever need something like that.

MIKEDUZZI hi. It was pretty common practice on the 050 through 090 saws "back in the day". It was a pretty easy attachment when using the green weenie and/or the K&Ns while working inland too. The oil, if it has a tackifier, works pretty good in this day & age. Thanks for watching.

I have a Pre 2016 Ms 261C-M I am running a Sugi Hara 18" .50 Narrow Kerf bar and 23 RS pro chain. Kevin hi. Some saws are different. Depends upon the controller circa at times. The best way is to get the controller part number and verify with your local dealer. The controllers will recalibrate themselves over time with no operator input too. Just takes a little longer is all. Thanks for watching.

Hey jack I have a 461m and it runs great during the warmer months however during cold months the dang thing leaves me hanging (won’t start) all the time unless I warm it up in the house or cab of a truck and those aren’t always an option since I often have to snowmobile a long way to get to the wood. It’ll pop consistently but immediately die. Oh and when I say colder months I’m talking -20/-45c. I have the intake switched to cold and I’ve dialled the carb to the temperature by warming it up inside the starting then dialling and running for a while in the cold. If you have any info I’d be stoked to hear it

Timothy hi. The air density changes dramatically from 80/90° Fahrenheit to the - 4 to - 49 you experience during winter months. I first wondered about the condition of the diaphragms in the carb. Slightly stiff and they will probably pass when it's warm but struggle the colder it becomes. It could be something simple like dialing in the jetting to compensate for the air density differential. The plug may need to be changed as well. Pretty hard the tell "over the phone" though. I do know that in those conditions any slight issue at normal temperatures can be exasperated and become a problem. If jetting adjustments don't help, I would have a looksee at the carb and plug. Kevin hi. At the risk of sounding off key, it is simply that - a black plug. I do not think that it helps the saw run cooler though. In fact, it probably would be better off if the hole was left open when running in the warmer months. I added it to see how my saw responded to having the air flow channeled all the way across the fins to exit near the handle bar support. Thanks for watching.

Hey jack just curious I cut about 30 cords a year for a few years now and I'm looking to up production. I know bucking up firewood is way different than logging, I feel like I'm constantly in the cut or limbing, I'm just trying to figure out about how many cuts is 5000BF roughly. I know your sections are alot longer than mine. I'm trying to translate how much work the saw is doing. I manly cut big wood as well as milling. Believe it or not my saw is a 362 and is getting tired lol I'm looking to get ported 462 or maybe get a 661. Thanks for your time and sharing your wisdom.

Matt hi. I funded some of my high school "wildings" by selling firewood. Sometimes I'd get lucky. On some of the nice, old buckskins it was 4 cuts to the cord. So in other words, four rounds yielded a cord of sellable firewood. Back on track... A 32' x 6" log has 50 board feet. A 20' x 102" log has 10,000 board feet. I've cut both. A guy would have to know the lengths and diameters of all the logs to be able to calculate your volume. It is going to be different every time you venture into the woods. Unless your trees are clean stemmed and large diameter your going to be in the cut quite a bit - whether it be limbs or bole. No way around it. Thanks for watching.

I'm no jack .lol.but been in trees 30 years ..661 is to heavy if your doing tree work regularly.462 beyter choice unless you do mostly firewood and the wood is west' coast size.I got 462 for weight .im older and small guy.both are all allarounders' on east coast .live in smokeys but do get some big ones sometimes .not enough to carry 395 or 661.

b r - I showed my way in the video. I'm a firm believer that we should all do the research and determine what is best for our saw/application/location/chain set- up/mix oil choice/etc. etc. My stance is to provide an option, whether it be carb tuning or one way to fell a tree. I am pretty big on suggestions personally.

Cob 702 hi. The m-tronic system is saving you from yourself with the A.I. controller. So running it fat on the high is "outta" the question. Running it a bit rich concentration wise is the only way to compensate there. Depending upon which mix oil you use, I wouldn't baby it lest you get buildup or shellacked rings. You could do a couple of heat cycles I guess. Mostly just throw a bar on and go. Thanks for watching.

Is the oil control bolt the same on a 066 original? I’ve bought a couple holzformma 66 knockoffs because they’re 250-270 delivered and put old carb, handlebars,chain tensioner and, most importantly, piston wrist pin circlips and they run fine but don’t oil enough.

LL hi. The 462 is an 1142 series. The 066/660 is 1128. Not to much of the "important stuff" will interchange. The control bolt is not compatible. Not sure why you don't just upgrade the entire oiler to oem? Thanks for watching.

hotsaws101 took it out today and this one oils fine, but I didn’t open it up yet being scared it would junk it. A couple more tanks of rich fuel and I’ll tune it up. I know they’re crap, but for less than three hundred plus old carb and handle bars they work fine. I wouldn’t want to pack in and have it grenade but I don’t get far from the truck anymore.

Hey man I got a question about my saw. I got a ms441 with a ported muffler engine is still stock, awhile ago it started to mess up. If you start it it will run for about 10 seconds then die any idea what’s wrong?

A. Grim hi. Both in a way. Some guys will do it at every new location. Some will do it the first time "out the gate". Some will never do it. According to support, the A.I. running the program will monitor and compensate. So, after a period of time (short vs long) the controller will adjust itself to the current conditions "automatically". Theoretically then, you should be able to not "manually" set it as seen here and just run it for awhile and the saw will "reprogram" itself to optimum. How long? I've heard as little as 5 medium diameter cuts. Thanks for watching.

José hi. I ran mine in zipped form with a lw 33 & 32 bars initially. I was running a 572 concurrently. I liked the 572 with a 33 and cut a fair amount of volume with it. I ended up conjuring up a 30" lw for the 462. Even in zipped form the 462s are lacking a bit down low imho. Part of that is balance too. From a manouverability perspective, I like the unit a little bit nose heavy. Not mostly nose heavy. The 462 bounces off the log when running while donning a 32 - that might be from mine hitting harder while running too. When compared to a zipped 461, the 462 is definitely lagging down low. Multiple recent posts shows this aspect. They are however, weightless for the displacement and power output. If I were a full time arborist, I'd have at least one of each. I think that in certain production felling applications the 462 would shine as well. Thanks for watching.

You did it a bit wrong Only need to let it idle for over 30 seconds, then full throttle and it goes from 10000 rpm to full revs as it it did in hte video but you need to wait for it to drop back to 10000 rpm for the calibration to be done

Tony Moy - A copy of the Stihl® literature on this is in the description. It's 30 to 60 seconds actually. I already addressed this with another viewer. Went long since I figured most won't time it to the gnats rear. Also, it was pretty cold and I wanted it as warm as possible for the wot blast. Additionally, they range a little in the amount of time it takes in dropping back down. Seems like it is a little less when the calibration has been done in the same location recently.
