Stihl ms661R Maxy (Max-Flow) vs K&N Air Clearner Systems

It is important to note that Maxy is synonymous with Max-Flow, or if you are a little bit older, Hole-Shot.
In a earlier video - • Stihl Early 066 vs M-t... - we took a look at the differential in performance between the oem fitment HD2 and the Max-Flow systems.
As mentioned, this 661 is no longer M-Tronic assisted. Seen here in the "phase #2" version from the previous build saga - • Stihl Early 066 vs Unl... - between it an the vintage 066. We have an unlimited coil and fully adjustable carburetor.
How long it takes to get though, a little bit of a difference but it's not huge. The rpm differential was slight. I did stop the 661 with in the first run for a split second but it did have the worst of the knot so the net was probably pretty close to even - corroborated by the times.
Timed runs as follows:
661 w/Maxy @ 13,200 K 13.08 & 11.96
661 w/ K&N @ 13,200 K 13.25 & 11.78
Overall, the 661 ran about the same with both options.
I can say from running both in various conditions & locations in the Pacific Northwest that the Max-flow system is more suited to inclement weather, brushy and burnt areas, as well as a little more resistant to the occasional "roll over" off the log.
A special thanks to my lovely bride for the help!
I am currently available for custom saw modifications. if you are interested, please shoot me an email.

Yes, as they taught me in Aviation Maintenance in 1992 Bernoulli's principle. (I know hotsaws101 knows this but some viewers might be interested to learn the following). Where velocity & pressure are inversely proportional to one another. As velocity increases pressure decreases. That's the main reason/forces on how a carburetor operates. As the air goes thru the venturi it gets necked down smaller & smaller like in a funnel & on this K&N filter venturi & the velocity/speed picks up & this causes an area of low pressure in the center area of the venturi & the fuel is sucked out of the float bowl thru channels/tubes/jets etc. & gets metered/mixed with the correct ratio of fuel (Stoichiometric ratio air/gasoline ratio is 14.7:1 & for a gasoline engine is the ideal ratio of air to fuel that burns most all of the fuel with no excess air). Good 3D video how a carb works here on RU-vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gkhd-eJk234.html How Carburetor Works ( 3D Animation) in Suzuki GS150R Motorcycle

Thanks again for a good comparison and thanks to "Mrs Hotsaws101" for running the tach. Always interesting seeing what these changes do. The numbers are one thing, but the how it feels in the hand is more interesting.

Thanks mrs. Jack for helping with this lesson! Man Jack, that saw flat out pulls......and as I'm just getting caught up on videos after a 20 year in the making hunting trip, this is the first video I've watched on these two one ton saw build comparisons since the stock as a rock intro of them! Needless to say I'm more than stocked about these saws and the videos I'm behind on lol. Safe cuttin pard

One thing that should considered it that the oiled foam filters stop way more dirt. I've seen lots of fine dust pass right through a k&n. I personally will never run one for the simple reason that they shorten engine life.
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 5 лет назад
Adam hi. They are both supposed to be oiled. Although, I've seen guys that don't. I ran a lot of K&N filters on my Huskys, on the coast as well as inland (about as dusty as it gets) over quite a few years. I never noticed a problem with fine particulates getting by unless there was a tear/hole/gash in the cotton element. Part of it is not using mixed gas to clean the elements - regardless of brand from my perspective. I think that the PJ-1 is a better filtration oil also. I use it in my K&Ns and Maxys. Thanks for watching.

I am super disappointed in the stock 661 air filter. I literally would not have bought this saw if I knew the stock air filter would let sawdust into the engine. The stock 661 air filter let's saw dust in at the baseplate, so I think any air filter that let's at least as much air in as stock and can also seat well enough that sawdust does not enter the engine would be a good investment.

Chris hi. You never mentioned how long the bar is, the bar manufacturer, which style of chain, and/or the method of sharpening. Also, the age of all of the equipment was left out. There are a lot of variables here. Assuming you have a 6401 that someone upsized with an am big bore kit as well. Thanks for watching.

I’ve got Max on my 460 Magnum and 660 and I’m sort of disappointed. Not a net positive especially considering the kit cost and the monster increase in boxy size which makes the saw even harder to handle in tight spots. But for now I’ll stick.

@hotsaws101 5 лет назад
Lorric Logging hi. Since I'm no desidious tree expert, this may be askew. It is a different kind of poplar tree. The poplar & cottonwood share the same Genius but not exactly the same species it seems. This was from a hybridization experimentation project where the trees where grown out in a field, far from any water source. It may have been with Aspen trees since I think they share the same Genius but are a slightly different species. The bark is pretty slick over the entire bole and "white-ish" not gnarly like the Cottonwoods around here. My lovely bride will attending to the back yard burn festivities. Thanks for watching.
@HubertofLiege
@HubertofLiege 5 лет назад
hotsaws101 hybrid poplar I’ve heard of, it’s all cottonwood to me. Wet, heavy, burns hot and fast with a lot of ash. Cottonwood here tends to take the edge off your chain. Maybe field grown doesn’t have dust in the bark. Cheap wood for chopping, I get it.
@hotsaws101
@hotsaws101 5 лет назад
I think that there is some dust in the bark since they grew out in the open and were subject to a lot of wind blasting them year round (dirt & gravel roads right there). My chains don't seem to last in really good cutting form a super long time and I hosed the logs off. It might also be from the "thrashing around" in the dirt during the harvesting process too. I did hit some dirt patches a couple of times in the beginning. That was a start over affair.
