I finally got to take my Moto Guzzi V7 850 Special for its first service... and another attempt at fixing the Check Engine Light (CEL) issue that I've had on this brand new 2022 motorcycle. It's a beautiful bike but Moto Guzzi are doing their best to remove all the joy of owning it.

It sounds to me like a weak mixture that the O2 sensors are picking up when you downshift and put on the power.The dealer is just replacing the O2 sensors thinking that they are faulty, when I fact they are just reporting the problem, it may indeed require a flashover for the E C M for the fix. Things to look for, vacuum leak on the air intake and air getting in the exhaust before the O2 sensor, fuel pressure, also try using super unleaded E5.

Got the same issues with my E5 MOTO GUZZI V85TT. It turns out that the ECU map is leaned out to basically nothing to meet emissions that an air cooled engine simply can't.

I live in the US and bought an (almost new) Moto Guzzi 1970 Ambassador 750. I drove it back and forth to work for many years and not a single problem. It was the most reliable bike I have ever owned. In the past have owned a Triumph 650 Trophy, Honda 1963 Dream and a 1967 HARLEY FLH. Later I bought a (new) 2004 new Road King Classic, and sold it because it was very heavy (about 900 lbs). Looking back the Guzzi was the best. I enjoy watching your videos, especially the scenery in Britain, Quite beautiful. Eddie

As a new to Guzzi owner with under 300 miles on the 850 Special I am more than a little interested in this topic. It must be wrecking you're new bike experience. I am usually wrong about most things but I thought the ECU stores in it's memory all the faults it detects. On a car these fault codes are then downloaded to a portable scan tool and can be read by a suitably trained mechanic / technician. Those portable devices must be regularly updated from the manufacturers website although some are live linked all the time. Moto Guzzi, being a relatively small company probably doesn't have the finances for a stand alone system. I wonder if the local shop has to take a download off a users ECU and upload the fike to Moto Guzzi who then have to have it analysed by Bosch or whoever provides their ECU ( and it operating parameters) . That's maybe why it days a few days to get info back to the dealer / customer. " check engine lights" can be caused by some very strange events. I saw a RU-vid video the other day where a car had "check engine" warning that turned out to be a leaking fuel filler cap. This allowed air in and 'vapour' out. This caused the EVAP system sensor to give a warning that fuel vapours may be escaping to atmosphere. ( environmental disaster or what). However, the ECU error code did not spell out what the problem was but just indicated where there might be a problem. So it's not just a tool to plug in and out pops the answer. These error codes need to be read by fully trained technicians and there's the rub. How many motorcycle dealers can afford to employ such expensively trained staff? The manufacturers of the ECU may well have to keep all the codes to themselves so as to ensure the information thus provided is up to date and accurate. Of course this may just be a the ramblings of my crazy mind and, of course, none of this helps you with your bikes problem. If my bike does what yours is doing I'm going to be "right fed up". Fingers crossed it all gets sorted soon.
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery Год назад
You are correct - SP have told me that they have to send the fault codes to Moto Guzzi and wait for them to tell them what's wrong, which takes a minimum of three days, and in my case 2 weeks (though it would have taken longer if I didn't get on the phone to Italy yesterday). Apparently a few bikes have the issue and they hope to be able to fix it with a remap in the next few weeks. I'll post an update video.

I went through 3 O2 sensors and a extremely expensive speedo (for MG) under warranty on my V7 iii. To be fair the dealer was pretty good, the back up according to the dealer from Piaggio was pretty woeful and I think there lay’s the problem. The dealer network is sketchy and changes a lot, so you have the perfect storm of poorly supported and trained dealers. I’ve still got the Guzzi, think it looks great, in fact better than any bike on the market and it hasn’t thrown any faults out of warranty however I’d suggest people have a back up Japanese bike.

Forgot to say that at the root of these problems is a ECU dodge to meet Euro 5 with an engine that’s not really up to it. They are set up far too lean from the factory hopefully they have sorted all this nonsense with the new water cooled unit in the V100. Strangely they got it nearly right with the V7 iii that only needed to reach Euro 4, it still benefits from a re map but not as much as the series ii.

My engine light came on just before I was due for thr 1st service so I thought that was MG's way of ensuring owners took their bikes in for service. But it began to have starting and running issues. The shop said it was the heat sensor and replaced it by taking one off of another bike on the showroom floor since the leadtime would've dashed my roadtrip plans which were set for the day after service was to be completed. Got the bike back with the light off. Went for the road trip and was 1,000 miles from home when it came on again. At least the 2nd time it didn't exhibit the same symptoms.

I have n't followed all the comments and replies since the video was posted so apologies if I'm repeating what is already been said. I have the same issue (Moto Guzzi V7 Stone IV) and brought it back four times to get it looked at. Short version (after going ballistic with the shop!) is that this is a "known issue" with MG (though they never quite broadcasted it). Something to do with the mapping parameters of the sensor that erroneously causes the light to come on - the management unit thinks the sensors are reading something abnormal. Anyway, MG said it is ok to ride the bike and they are working on a mapping to solve the problem - but could be months before it is dine and tested, and rolled out. Hope this helps.

If it was me I would be telling Moto Guzzi that I wanted a new bike, enough is enough. Here in New Zealand there are consumer laws that state that if a problem isn't repaired in a timely manner (after say 3 or 4 attempts) you are entitled to a replacement for loss of faith in the product.
@CGRidesMotorcycles
@CGRidesMotorcycles Год назад
Our consumer laws only give the dealer one chance to repair... but there's the problem: it's the dealer, not the manufacturer. My supplying dealer went into liquidation, taking my rights with it.
@onecookieboy

@@CGRidesMotorcycles Surely Moto Guzzi have some responsibility under consumer law, they made the machine after all. Interestingly, I saw a review of the same bike somewhere else on YT and the engine check light was also constantly blinking during acceleration, it looks like a software problem, perhaps the light being triggered too easily by the O2 sensors.

I have an old T3 which is the most wonderful two-wheeled tractor you could possibly ride. I also have a BMW R Nine T which I have been thinking of part-exchanging against the new V100. I'm not sure I'm going to bother. The service from BMW has been faultless, the dealership fantastic. When I bought the R Nine T I was thinking of a Griso but the local dealer seemed flakey. It closed down soon after I got the BMW. A wise decision. There's nothing more frustrating than trusting a brand to deliver and finding it unsupportive. I would like Moto Guzzi to succeed but it needs to learn that it is only as good as the opinion of its most disaffected customer.

Hello from Burry Port, 15 miles to the west of Swansea. I had an intermittent FI warning light for an age with my Suzuki V twin that caused the bike to randomly cut out, usually at fairly low speeds. It was pretty scary at times but was eventually traced to a corroded HT lead. My bike is now 18 years old but was exhibiting this fault from as early as 2005, when I bought it all but brand new from a lad in Burnley with just 510 miles on it {he'd found himself in some unforeseen financial issues}. I bought some nearly new spares off eBay and have had no trouble since a coil and HT lead change. I just thought I'd mention this, if all other avenues fail you and your own bother fails to be totally resolved. Bikes may be totally or nearly new when we get them but one does wonder sometimes how new some of the electrical parts fitted to them actually are !
@CGRidesMotorcycles
@CGRidesMotorcycles Год назад
Was it an SV by any chance? I had an SV1000 that did the same thing. They had a coil each side of the engine attached to the frame, and the one on the right side had the HT connector facing forwards, so all the road crud got in and corroded it. Wasn't much fun when one of the cylinders cut out!!!😁 This bike is running fine, so it's got to be a sensor issue. Good shout though 👍🏻

May I suggest having a look what type of plug is used by Guzzi for the diagnostics. If it's an OBDII port, a simple £15 hand held code reader from an online auction site may be helpful in telling you the problem. I use one on my Triumph, it works a treat. I've even noticed that adaptor leads are available (around £12) to connect OBDII devices to vehicles which don't have OBDII style ports, but I have never used those myself.
@CGRidesMotorcycles

It has a smaller port, but you can get OBDII adapters. The problem is that the dealers themselves can't decipher the codes and have to go to the MG tech help desk, so other than clearing the codes temporarily, I'm not sure what else it would do.

Maybe start with the sales of goods act that it is not fit for purpose? Lambda/oxygen sensors generally cause a misfire when they wrongly report a rich mixture and the ecu weakens off the mixture to much. An ecu generally detects misfire via the crankshaft sensor which looks at the crank rotation speed between cylinder pulses. It may be timing issue. Hope they sort it promptly for you. Before Moto Guzzi increased the capacity of the V7 to 850cc this year, arguably it was indeed underpowered. I suspect that's why some people are mentioning it, as the 750cc version pumped out about 50bhp or thereabouts. Pretty poor. Even at 850cc, 64bhp is still rather mediocre, and keeps it ahead of the RE Interceptor (as it should, bearing in mind that is 650cc), but more importantly the 850 V7 has good low down grunt being a V twin. As for your engine warning light, when dropping a gear and loading the motor up instigates the problem, that is a strong clue that any competent workshop should be able to remedy. I do not think its the sensors, or the ECU, which is probably a ubiquitous Bosch unit used by many manufacturers. I'm not sure the V7 has an IMU for cornering ABS, traction control, like my Ducati, but that is a more likely culprit if it does?

850cc and 65hp was near identical to the previous model bonneville and the current one still has the same power with a 900cc motor. I guess that's this bikes obvious competitor. It's not really designed to be revved hard and the low and mid range grunt will match a lot of much more powerful bikes.

That's a shame. They are a great bike and the vast majority have no problem at all. The engine is incredibly reliable, and easy to work on if you are interested in doing your own servicing. You can put a lot of carefree miles on a Guzzi - I know I have, twice.

@@GooseDave too much of a risk, I want to see this one fixed properly before I'll even consider one

Be "happy" you don't have Cruise Control.... On my one it was put out of commission by the first-services' soft 💩 updates, more than a month ago - STILL NO fix ‼🤬

Sorry to hear that. I've had some progress by calling Italy using the number on the website.

Sort it yourself. Not difficult.

As it happens it needed a complete new map with homologation against Euro 5 emissions standards... so, the only way I could have sorted it myself is by taking the CEL bulb out.

EPA is the culprit. You can't lean out the bikes to meet E5 emissions that water cooled engines can barely meet. F@ck the EPA and Green Peace and their WOKE crooks running them.

The problem is that it’s the supplying dealer, not the manufacturer, that is liable… and since they went bust, I was stuffed. Had I bought on finance, I’d have had some recourse, but in the end it got sorted. It’s been completely fine since MG redid the map, and they gave me an extra year of warranty and breakdown cover. Who knows why only a small percentage of bikes were affected 🤷🏼‍♂️ They could have communicated better instead of leaving me (and their authorised dealers) in the dark. Mistakes happen, and things go wrong, it’s how a company deals with it that matters. They had an opportunity to cover themselves in glory, but they chose the other path.
